Chapter 5 - The War for the Estate

The peace they had built was threatened one final time six months later.
A coalition of remnant factions led by the late Matteo Rossi’s brother launched a desperate, armed siege against the Costa estate during a heavy fog late at night.
Explosions detonated at the outer perimeter gate. Gunfire echoed through the black pine trees as dozens of mercenary forces tried to overrun the house to eliminate Vincent once and for all.
Dominic rushed into the main hall, holding an assault rifle. "Boss! They’ve breached the driveway! We need to get Miss Elena to the safe house!"
Vincent’s face turned into carved granite. He grabbed a handgun from his desk, turning to Elena with absolute authority.
"Dominic, take her down to the bunker," Vincent commanded.
"No!" Elena cried, grabbing Vincent’s arm, her eyes wild with panic. "I'm not leaving you, Vincent!"
Vincent grabbed her face in both hands, pressing his forehead against hers. "Listen to me, my love. I survived a bomb. I survived twelve foolish doctors. I am not dying tonight. Go with Dominic. Trust me."
He kissed her hard on the lips, then pushed her gently toward the hidden staircase behind the library bookcase.
For forty-five minutes, the sound of heavy gunfire and shattering glass echoed from the floors above. Elena paced the steel bunker, her heart pounding, praying with every breath for the safety of the man she loved.
Finally, the heavy bunker door hissed open.
Vincent stood in the doorway. His suit jacket was gone, his dark dress shirt torn at the arm, his knuckles bruised, but he was standing tall and unharmed.
Behind him, the noise of battle had completely died down. The enemy had been totally annihilated.

Elena bolted across the room and threw herself into his arms. Vincent caught her, lifting her off the ground, holding her so tightly she could feel the powerful, steady beat of his heart against her cheek.
"It's over, Elena," Vincent whispered into her hair, his voice thick with deep emotion. "The city is clean. Nobody will ever threaten our home again."
