Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

Down in the main ballroom of the Drake Hotel, Victor Whitmore was standing at the podium, preparing to sign the formal merger agreement that would grant him total authority over the Moretti network.
"And now," Victor announced loudly into the microphone, "I call upon the leaders of the five families to witness the signature that seals our future!"
Suddenly, the massive double doors of the ballroom blew open with a deafening crash.
The heavy crystal chandeliers flickered and went out, leaving only the red emergency lights illuminating the room.
A hundred guests screamed as twenty fully armed tactical operatives dressed in black Moretti gear poured into the room, securing every exit.
Through the heavy smoke, a single figure walked slowly down the central aisle.
Dominic Moretti.
He wore a spotless black suit, his dark hair slicked back, his expression carrying the absolute, terrifying majesty of a king returning to reclaim his throne.
Victor Whitmore dropped his pen, stepping back from the podium, his face turning the color of ash. "No... no! You're dead! Thomas confirmed you were dead!"
"Thomas lied, Victor," Dominic’s voice echoed through the high-ceilinged ballroom. "Just like you lied to these families for eight years."
I stepped out from the side balcony entrance, dressed in a sharp black suit, carrying the leather-bound master ledger in my hands. I walked down the steps, stopping beside Dominic, and handed the ledger to the oldest leader of the five families, Don Carmine.
Don Carmine opened the ledger, his sharp eyes scanning the pages of evidence, his face turning dark with fury.
"Victor Whitmore," Don Carmine declared, his deep voice cutting through the silent ballroom. "This ledger proves you embezzled eighty million dollars from the five families, framed the Moretti estate, and ordered the execution of Marcus Carter."
The surrounding mob bosses instantly drew their weapons, pointing them directly at Victor Whitmore and his four bodyguards.
Victor knew it was over. He looked around the room, seeing total ruin, total betrayal, and total defeat.
In a final, desperate act of madness, Victor pulled a concealed snub-nosed revolver from his pocket and aimed it straight at Dominic’s chest.
"If I go to hell, Moretti," Victor screamed, "you're coming with me!"
Before Dominic could draw his weapon, I moved.
I stepped in front of Dominic, caught Victor’s wrist with my left hand, and executed a lethal, sweeping shoulder throw.
CRACK.
Victor Whitmore slammed violently onto the hardwood stage, his weapon clattering across the floor. I dropped my knee directly onto his sternum, pinning him to the wood, and picked up his dropped revolver, pressing the cold steel barrel directly against his forehead.
The ballroom went deathly silent.
Victor stared up at me, gasping for air, looking into my eyes—the exact same fierce, unwavering blue eyes of the man he had murdered eight years ago.
"Marcus..." Victor gasped, blood trickling from his mouth. "You're... Marcus’s daughter..."
"My name is Avery Carter," I whispered, my finger resting lightly on the trigger. "And this is for my father."
Victor closed his eyes, weeping, waiting for the bullet.
I looked at him for three agonizing seconds, feeling the full weight of my father's memory, my mother's tears, and my eleven years of pain.
Then, slowly, I clicked the safety catch back on, lowered the weapon, and handed it to Detective Ray Miller, who had just rushed into the room alongside federal agents.
"Take him," I said quietly. "Let him rot in a federal cell for the rest of his life."
Dominic walked up beside me, placing his hand gently on the small of my back. He looked down at Victor Whitmore being dragged away in chains, then looked at me with a reverence and pride that warmed my very soul.

"You did it, Avery," Dominic whispered.
"We did it," I corrected softly.
