Chapter 9 - The Drake Hotel Heist

The rain returned to Chicago on Friday night, pouring over the glittering lights of the Magnificent Mile.

The Drake Hotel stood tall and majestic at the corner of Michigan Avenue, its grand ballroom hosting the annual private summit of the five families that controlled the Midwest underground. Over two hundred high-society figures, corrupt politicians, and cartel representatives filled the ballroom.

At the center of the head table sat Victor Whitmore—a broad, silver-haired man in his late fifties wearing an immaculate white tuxedo. Beside him sat his daughter, Vanessa, wearing a dramatic black lace dress, a arrogant smirk on her face as she accepted congratulations from guests who believed Dominic Moretti was dead.

"To a new era!" Victor Whitmore bellowed, raising a glass of crystal champagne to the crowded room. "An era where the old Moretti rule is buried, and progress takes its place!"

The crowd cheered, raising their glasses.

Unbeknownst to anyone in the room, thirty floors above the ballroom, a black glass window on the penthouse exterior clicked open softly.

Dressed in a sleek, non-reflective black tactical suit with a hair-thin winch cable attached to my belt, I dropped quietly onto the carpeted floor of Victor Whitmore’s private study.

I unhooked the cable, pulled a micro-frequency scanner from my utility vest, and walked directly to the heavy oil painting hanging behind the mahogany desk.

I swung the painting aside, revealing a heavy, six-inch thick biometric steel safe.

"Dominic," I spoke quietly into my earpiece microphone. "I'm at the safe. Starting the bypass sequence now."

Through the earpiece, Dominic’s voice came through crystal clear from his position in the hotel’s subterranean control room. "You have four minutes before the security rotation hits the floor, Avery. Move fast."

I attached a palm-sized digital decoder to the safe's electronic lock. The screen flashed through thousands of numerical combinations every second.

3... 2... 1... CLICK.

The heavy steel bolts retracted with a quiet hiss. I swung the safe door open.

Inside, resting on a velvet tray, was a thick, leather-bound master ledger filled with offshore bank account numbers, corrupt political payout records, and the original wiretap recordings that proved Victor Whitmore had ordered the murder of my father eight years ago.

I pulled the ledger out, tucking it into my tactical backpack.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the study clicked open.

The lights snapped on.

Standing in the doorway, holding a high-caliber revolver, was Vanessa Whitmore.

She wore her expensive party dress, but her eyes were wild, bloodshot, and filled with deep, frantic paranoia.

Vanessa stared at me in my black tactical suit, then at the open safe, her mouth dropping open in utter disbelief.

"You..." Vanessa gasped, her voice shaking violently. "The delivery girl..."

"Hello, Vanessa," I said smoothly, unhooking my leather gloves, stepping away from the desk.

"You're alive! Dominic is alive!" Vanessa shrieked, raising the revolver, aiming it directly at my face. "My father was right! It was a trap!"

"Put the gun down, Vanessa," I said, taking a slow, calculated step toward her. "You don't know how to use that."

"I'll kill you!" Vanessa screamed, pulling the trigger.

BANG.

The bullet tore through the leather chair behind me as I dropped low, sweeping my leg across the floorboards. My boot caught Vanessa’s ankles, knocking her off her feet. She crashed heavily onto her back, the revolver flying from her hand and skidding under the desk.

Before she could scream again, I straddled her waist, pinning her arms to the floor, my hand gripping her throat with iron force.

Vanessa thrashing wildly beneath me, her eyes wide with mortal terror as she choked for air.

"This is for my mother," I whispered, my voice ice-cold.

I drove a quick, precise nerve strike into the side of her neck. Vanessa’s eyes rolled back, and her body went completely limp on the carpet.

I stood up, pulled my tactical backpack tight, and activated my earpiece.

"Dominic," I said, stepping over Vanessa’s unconscious body toward the balcony. "I have the master ledger. Send the signal."
