Chapter 3 - THE PARASITES UPSTAIRS

For the next four hours, sitting in the cab of my truck, I monitored the live feeds from inside my own home.

What I witnessed through the lens of those high-definition lenses made my stomach turn.

In the master suite—the room Claire and I had painted together when we bought the house—my sister Paige was sitting in front of Claire’s vanity mirror. She was trying on Claire’s fine jewelry, dropping expensive pearl necklaces into her designer handbag while sipping sparkling wine from a crystal goblet.

Her boyfriend, Marcus—a man who had never held a steady job for more than three months— lay across my bed in his shoes, lazily scrolling through a tablet, yelling out luxury vacation packages they should book for the upcoming spring break.

Downstairs in the formal dining room, my mother, Eleanor, sat at the head of the long mahogany table. Surrounding her were four of her local social club friends. They were laughing loudly, surrounded by catering boxes from an expensive local French bistro.

“Oh, Eleanor,” one of her friends gushed, holding up a glass of Pinot Noir. “You’ve done such a wonderful job maintaining this estate while Grant is away. It must be so difficult handling all the property management yourself!”

Eleanor smiled—that polished, elegant smile she had practiced her entire life to mask her profound narcissism.

“It is a sacrifice, darling,” Eleanor lied smoothly, adjusting her diamond cardigan clip. “Grant is so focused on his engineering work that he simply doesn't understand domestic responsibilities. And poor Claire... well, as you know, her mental health has been so fragile lately. I’ve had to take total control of the household to ensure the children are kept in a peaceful environment.”

“It’s so tragic about Claire,” another woman chimed in, shaking her head. “You’re an absolute saint for carrying that burden, Eleanor.”

“A mother does what a mother must,” Eleanor replied with practiced solemnity, taking a long sip of her wine.

Sitting in the cold dark of my rental truck, watching my mother casually destroy my wife’s reputation while feasting on the money I earned working double shifts in freezing Atlantic ocean swells, a cold clarity settled over me.

Eleanor didn't just want my money. She wanted my life.

She had spent her whole life bitter about her own failed marriage, bitter about her lack of financial independence, and bitterly jealous of the quiet, loving home Claire and I had built. When I left for the offshore assignment, she saw her opportunity to step into the void, rewrite the narrative, and claim the throne she felt entitled to.

At 3:30 AM, the dinner party upstairs finally cleared out. The house lights dimmed. Paige and Marcus retired to the master bedroom; Eleanor went to the guest suite on the main floor.

The house fell quiet. But downstairs, through the camera feed in the utility corridor, I saw the faint line of light beneath the cellar door where my family sat waiting in the dark.

At 4:15 AM, my satellite phone buzzed.

“Grant,” Arthur’s voice echoed crisp and sharp. “The paperwork is signed. State Police Captain Vance Miller is coordinating the entry detail. Three marked cruisers, two unmarked federal asset-seizure vans, and an emergency medical team are staging at the county logistics pad right now.”

“I’m heading back to the house,” I said, starting the engine. “I’ll meet you at the driveway.”
