Chapter 7 - The First CollectionSix months later.

The sunlit, industrial-chic exhibition space in Soho was packed to absolute capacity.
Flashbulbs popped in rapid succession, music pulsed through state-of-the-art speakers, and a breathless, electrified murmur rippled through the front rows where international buyers, fashion editors, and critics sat clutching their embossed velvet programs.
Backstage, the air smelled of fresh orchids, warm steam from professional garment steamers, and expensive perfume.
“Five minutes, Mrs. Vance!” my lead stage manager called out, giving me an encouraging thumbs-up.
I stood in front of the massive gilded mirror, adjusting the cuffs of my tailored ivory blazer. My reflection was clear, confident, and radiant. The dark days of the brownstone, the bruises, and the silence were all buried in the past.
On the wall beside the mirror hung the framed legal settlement documents from the final bankruptcy restructuring of Caruso Design Group—now officially rebranded and restructured under court supervision, with fifty percent equity transferred directly to my independent holding company, Nora Vance Atelier.
Dominic was entirely out of the picture, stripped of his CEO title, fighting off ongoing federal fraud investigations in a desperate attempt to save his personal liberty. Vanessa Moretti was long gone, blacklisted from every major fashion house in Europe and North America.
And my son, Eli, was sitting in the front row between Marcus Sterling and Mrs. Gable, holding a small toy dinosaur and wearing a proud, gap-toothed grin as he waited for his mother’s show to begin.
“Places, everyone!” the voice rang out over the backstage intercom.
The heavy velvet curtains parted at the end of the runway, and the first model stepped out into the blinding wash of spotlights.
She wore a breathtaking, flawless ivory bridal gown with a narrow-backed cut, asymmetrical folded shoulder, and delicate diagonal seams that caught the light with every step.
It was my dress.
Every single stitch, every line, every visionary detail drawn from my own hand, bearing my own name on every label hanging in the flagship boutiques across Fifth Avenue, London, and Paris.

As the applause swelled into a deafening, thunderous roar from the audience, I walked out to the end of the runway, standing tall under the bright lights, wrapped in the applause of a world that finally knew who I was.
I didn't need to look back. For the first time in my life, I was exactly where I belonged—standing in the light, completely unmovable, and entirely my own.
