Chapter 6 - Where the Sunflowers Grow

Six months later.

The early autumn wind blew softly over the quiet, manicured hills of the Oakridge Cemetery.

Gideon walked up the small stone pathway carrying a massive, vibrant bouquet of fresh, long-stemmed sunflowers. He wore a simple navy sweater and slacks, looking healthier, rested, and younger than he had in years.

Walking beside him, holding his left hand tightly in her small fingers, was four-year-old Lily.

They stopped in front of a beautiful white marble headstone situated beneath a sweeping weeping willow tree. Engraved on the polished stone were simple, elegant words:

REN CROSSWELL

2021 – 2025

“She always followed the sun.”

Gideon knelt down on one knee on the cool grass, laying the bright yellow flowers gently against the base of the marble headstone.

Lily stepped forward, taking a tiny yellow sunflower she had picked from the estate garden out of her coat pocket. She laid it carefully beside the large bouquet, placing her small hand on the cool stone.

“Hi, Ren,” Lily whispered in her sweet, clear voice. “We brought you happy flowers today. The big ones you like.”

Gideon closed his eyes, letting the quiet breeze wash over him.

For a year, coming to this spot had felt like drowning in an ocean of unbearable grief and dark, suffocating guilt. But today, listening to the soft rustle of the leaves and the gentle breath of the little girl standing beside him, he felt only peace.

Ren’s memory was no longer a open wound bleeding into the dark corners of a lonely mansion. It was a light—a bright, golden sun that had guided two lost, starving little girls through a violent storm straight to his door, saving their lives and rescuing his soul from the darkness.

Lily turned to Gideon, wrapping her tiny arms around his neck. “Daddy Gideon? Can we go home now? Mommy and Maya are making apple pie.”

Gideon picked up the little girl, cradling her securely against his chest, and looked back down at his daughter’s grave one last time.

“Yes, sweetheart,” Gideon smiled, kissing Lily’s cheek as he turned back toward the sunlit path. “Let's go home.”

Behind them, under the warm afternoon sun, the sunflowers stood tall and bright, turning their golden faces toward the light, right where they belonged.
