Chapter 5 - The Night on the Terrace

By nine o'clock that evening, the storm had passed over Manhattan, leaving a clear, star-lit sky over the city.
I stood on the private terrace of Adrian’s Park Avenue penthouse—the same terrace where, two months ago, he had stood in the dark and asked for a divorce.
The city lights twinkled below us like a sea of fallen stars. The cool autumn breeze rustled my dress, but I didn't feel cold.
Behind me, the glass sliding doors opened softly.
Adrian walked out onto the terrace holding two mugs of warm cider. He wore a simple grey cashmere sweater and dark trousers, looking relaxed for the first time in months.
He handed me a mug, stepping up to the marble railing beside me.
"Julian resigned from the board an hour ago," Adrian said quietly, staring out at the Empire State Building. "His faction completely collapsed after you walked into that room."
I took a small sip of the warm cider, smiling faintly. "He was a bully, Adrian. He needed to be put in his place."
"You were incredible," Adrian whispered, turning his head to look at me. "You walked in there like a queen taking back her throne."
"I was protecting my family," I said softly, looking up into his gray eyes.
Adrian set his mug down on the ledge. He turned toward me, taking a slow, hesitant step closer. The distance between us closed until I could feel the intense heat radiating from his chest.
"Claire," he murmured, his voice trembling slightly. "Why did you do it? You could have let them vote me out. You could have let me lose everything."
I looked at him—really looked at him. I saw the man who had worked eighty hours a week to build an empire, the man who had tried to sacrifice his own reputation to keep me safe, the man who had wept on a hardwood floor over a tiny ultrasound picture.
"Because I realized something today, Adrian," I whispered, tears welling up in my eyes.
"What?"
"I realized that you were never cold to me because you didn't love me," I said, reaching out, gently touching the side of his jaw. "You were cold because you were terrified of losing me. You built walls around your heart because you thought love was a weakness that your enemies could exploit."
Adrian caught my hand against his cheek, leaning into my touch, closing his eyes as a single tear escaped his eyelashes.
"I was so scared, Claire," Adrian choked out, his voice raw with years of buried emotion. "My whole life, everyone I ever loved was used as leverage against me. When I married you, I swore I would never let anyone hurt you. But in trying to keep you safe... I broke your heart."
"Then fix it," I whispered.
Adrian opened his eyes, staring at me with a breathless, desperate hope. "How?"
I took his big, warm hand and pulled it down, resting it gently over the center of my baby bump.
As if on cue, a sudden, distinct flutter pressed against the palm of his hand from inside my womb.
A kick.
Adrian froze. His breath hitched completely. His eyes widened in absolute, childlike wonder as he felt our baby move for the very first time.
"Did you... did you feel that?" I laughed softly, tears pouring down my cheeks.
Adrian dropped down onto his knees right there on the stone terrace floor. He pressed his forehead gently against my stomach, wrapping his broad arms tightly around my waist, sobbing quietly against the silk of my dress.
May you like
"I feel it," Adrian wept, holding us close to his chest. "I feel our baby, Claire... I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry..."
I ran my fingers through his dark hair, leaning down to press a soft kiss against the crown of his head, feeling the heavy burden of three years of pain and silence lift from our shoulders into the cool night air.
