Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

The raid took place at dawn.

Four federal law enforcement vans, accompanied by state police cruisers, pulled into the gated driveway of the Mercer estate. The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the grand marble pillars and white rose bushes where, less than a month ago, two hundred guests had celebrated my wedding.

I sat in the passenger seat of Detective Miller’s unmarked vehicle, watching through the windshield as federal agents executed a search and seizure warrant for all electronic devices, financial records, and server towers on the property.

Victor Mercer was led out through the grand front doors in handcuffs. He was dressed in a silk bathrobe, his hair uncombed, his face a terrifying shade of purple as he screamed at the arresting officers.

"Do you know who I am?!" Victor roared, his voice echoing across the manicured lawn. "I build this city! I pay your salaries! You can't touch me!"

"Victor Mercer," Detective Miller said, stepping out of the car and reading from a laminated card. "You are under arrest for federal customs fraud, tax evasion, witness intimidation, and conspiracy to commit physical assault. You have the right to remain silent..."

As Victor was guided toward a transport vehicle, his eyes caught mine sitting in the car. For a second, the grand, terrifying titan of industry looked small, broken, and hopelessly pathetic. He tried to spit toward my direction, but an officer firmly pushed his head down and maneuvered him into the back seat.

A few minutes later, Adrian walked out of the house. He wasn't in handcuffs—he had agreed to a full cooperation package with the federal prosecutors twenty-four hours earlier, turning over all corporate passcodes in exchange for a reduced charge.

He stood on the gravel driveway, looking around at the federal agents stripping his family home of its luxury. He looked hollow, completely stripped of the unearned confidence he had carried his entire life.

He walked slowly over to Detective Miller’s car. I rolled down my window an inch.

"Claire..." Adrian whispered, his eyes filled with tears. "I'm sorry. God, I'm so sorry. I didn't know he sent that man after you... I swear I didn't know."

"It doesn't matter if you knew, Adrian," I said, looking at him through the narrow gap. "You stood by and let him create a monster. You let him make you a monster."

"I lost everything, Claire," Adrian choked out, burying his face in his hands. "The house, the company, my reputation... I have nothing left."

May you like

"You have your life, Adrian," I said coldly. "Which is more than you would have had if you kept following your father down that dark road. Now you get to learn how to be a real person, without a fortune to hide your cowardice behind."

I rolled the window up, turned to Detective Miller, and said softly, "Let's go home, Raymond. We're done here."
