Chapter 4 - The Fall of Westchester

By 3:00 PM that afternoon, the financial news networks were in a state of absolute frenzy.
"STERLING DYNAMICS COLLAPSES FOLLOWING CANCELLED MERGER." "MYSTERY CHAIRWOMAN OF VANCE MERIDIAN EXECUTES HOSTILE TAKEOVER." "FORMER EXECUTIVE LANDON STERLING UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR CORPORATE FRAUD."
Inside the Westchester estate, the atmosphere was apocalyptic.
The beautiful mahogany dining room that had served as the stage for Evelyn's dismissal eighteen hours earlier was now littered with legal papers, half-empty gin bottles, and frantic tax notices.
Beatrice Sterling sat on her velvet armchair, her immaculate hair unraveled, weeping hysterically into a silk handkerchief.
"It’s gone... everything is gone!" Beatrice wailed. "The bank just called! They're freezing the estate accounts! They say the line of credit was secured against Landon’s Sterling Dynamics stock!"
Chloe sat on the couch, staring blankly at her phone screen. "All my credit cards were declined at the boutique today. My friends are deleting my comments on Instagram. Do you know how humiliating this is?!"
Landon sat at the head of the table. His charcoal suit was wrinkled, his tie hung loosely around his collar, his eyes were bloodshot and hollow.
Sophia Mercer was standing near the French doors, frantically pacing as she spoke into her phone.
"I don't care!" Sophia shouted into the receiver. "Find me a defense attorney who handles corporate compliance! No, I'm not in Manhattan, I'm... what do you mean Vance Meridian filed an emergency asset freeze?!"
She slammed her phone down on the table, turning on Landon like a cornered animal.
"You complete idiot!" Sophia screamed, her beautiful face contorted with rage. "You told me she was a nobody! You told me she was a timid little housewife who lived off your salary!"
"She was!" Landon yelled back, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table. "She cooked! She did the laundry! She never mentioned Vance Meridian once in five years!"
"Because she didn't need to, you fool!" Sophia spat. "She owned the world, and she let you pretend you were king so long as you were faithful! And you traded the owner of a multi-billion-dollar empire for a vice presidency and a few hotel rooms!"
"Get out!" Beatrice suddenly shrieked, standing up and pointing a trembling finger at Sophia. "Get out of my house, you tramp! You ruined my son! You ruined this family!"
"Your family was built on a lie!" Sophia sneered back, grabbing her designer bag from the chair. "Your son is a fraud who couldn't even solve his own logistics math without his wife fixing it in the dark! Keep your bankrupt estate!"
Sophia stormed out of the house, slamming the grand oak front door so hard the crystal chandelier rattled above the table.
Silence fell over the dining room—a heavy, suffocating silence.
Landon buried his face in his hands, dry-heaving from pure, unadulterated stress and regret.
Every memory of the past five years flooded back into his mind with agonizing clarity.
He remembered the late nights when he had fallen asleep at his desk, waking up to find a warm blanket draped over his shoulders and his complex financial spreadsheets miraculously balanced.
He remembered the crucial client meeting with the European freight union where Evelyn had casually suggested he reframe the contract language around "adaptive labor nodes"—a phrase that had won him a fifty-million-dollar deal.
He had thought he was a genius. He had thought he was destined for greatness.
He had been nothing more than a child playing with gold coins handed to him by a queen.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
Chloe jumped up nervously. "Is that... is that the police?"
Landon slowly stood up, his heart sinking into his stomach. He walked down the hallway and opened the front door.
Standing on the porch was Thomas, the senior driver, accompanied by two men in dark suits carrying leather folders.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Sterling," Thomas said politely.
"Thomas..." Landon gasped out, grabbing the door frame for support. "Is Evelyn with you? Can I speak to her? Please, Thomas, tell her I'll do anything! I'll sign an apology, I'll go on news television, I'll—"
"Ms. Vance is not here, sir," Thomas interrupted, his voice devoid of emotion. He gestured to the two men beside him. "These gentlemen are representatives from the Vance Meridian legal department."
One of the attorneys stepped forward, handing Landon a thick blue binder.
"Mr. Sterling," the attorney stated professionally. "As of two o'clock today, Vance Meridian holds the primary mortgage on this property following our purchase of Sterling Dynamics' bad debt assets. We are executing an emergency eviction notice under Section 802."
Landon stared at the blue binder. "Eviction...? This is my family home!"
May you like
"It was your family home, sir," the attorney corrected smoothly. "You have until six o'clock tomorrow evening to vacate the premises. Have a pleasant day."
Thomas offered a short, respectful nod, turned, and walked back down the driveway toward the black Maybach, leaving Landon standing alone on the porch as the cold wind began to blow.
