Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT THE TOWER FELL

Chloe stared at the video.
“You knew I wanted revenge before I approached you,” she whispered.
Marcus pressed one hand against the bullet wound in his side.
“I knew who you were the first week.”
“You told me you hated Evelyn.”
“I needed both of you to believe what served me.”
Five years earlier, Marcus had offered Chloe access to Raymond’s private records if she helped force me out of the marriage. Chloe believed she was using him to investigate her father’s destruction.
Marcus had been using her to locate the encrypted drive.
But he made one mistake.
I had removed the drive before entering the kitchen that night.
He searched our home after I left and found nothing.
That was why he emptied our accounts and rushed the divorce. He hoped financial pressure would force me to reveal where I had hidden it.
When I simply disappeared, he assumed I had destroyed it.
Peter dragged Chloe backward.
“Play the remaining files.”
I opened the next folder.
Raymond Mercer had recorded private meetings for decades. The files showed him bribing inspectors, blackmailing officials, forging ownership transfers, and discussing Andrew Vance’s destruction.
Marcus appeared in several later recordings.
He had inherited not only his father’s company but also his methods.
One file contained plans to move Mercer Development’s liabilities into Rhodes Capital. Peter’s name appeared beside payments totaling twelve million dollars.
“You kept copies,” Peter said to Marcus.
“My father kept copies.”
“And you knew.”
“I knew enough.”
Peter aimed at him.
“You planned to use them against me after the acquisition.”
“Insurance is good business.”
While they argued, I copied the files to Rhodes Capital’s secure legal server. The transfer moved slowly.
Eight percent.
Twelve.
Peter noticed.
He struck the laptop closed.
The upload continued in the background.
“Stand up,” he ordered.
Julian moved between us.
Peter pressed the pistol to his chest.
“I don’t need both of you.”
Chloe caught my eye.
Her hands were tied, but the encrypted drive lay near her foot.
She kicked it beneath the conference table.
I dropped as if frightened, grabbed it, and slid it toward Julian.
He trapped it beneath his shoe.
Marcus reached for his fallen weapon.
Peter fired first.
The bullet struck the floor beside Marcus’s hand.
“Next one goes through your skull.”
The fire alarm sounded.
Ruiz’s team had reached the thirty-ninth floor and restored part of the emergency system.
Sprinklers activated.
Water poured over the conference room.
Peter dragged Chloe toward the private elevator.
The doors opened.
No car waited behind them.
Only an empty shaft.
The system had stopped between floors.
Peter barely caught himself before stepping into darkness.
Chloe threw her weight backward.
They fell together.
Peter seized the door frame with one hand and Chloe’s bound wrists with the other. She hung above the shaft.
“Help me!” she screamed.
Julian moved first.
He grabbed Chloe’s arm.
I wrapped both hands around Julian’s waist while Marcus watched from the floor.
Peter tried to climb.
The closing elevator doors pressed against his injured shoulder.
“Pull me up!” he shouted.
Julian could not hold both of them.
“Let him go,” Marcus said.
Chloe looked down at Peter.
For ten years, revenge had controlled every decision she made. Peter had helped her reach Marcus, then threatened Emma and turned her grief into another weapon.
Still, she reached for him.
“Take my hand.”
Peter looked at her outstretched fingers.
Then he raised his pistol.
He aimed at Julian.
Chloe released him.
Peter fell into the darkness.
The gunshot echoed through the shaft after he disappeared.
We pulled Chloe to safety.
Police later found Peter alive on top of the stalled elevator twelve floors below. Both legs were broken, but he survived to face prosecution.
The file transfer reached sixty-one percent before the building’s servers shut down.
It was enough.
Ruiz entered the conference room and placed Marcus under arrest while paramedics treated his wound.
He looked at me as they lifted him onto a stretcher.
“Evelyn, listen to me.”
“I listened to you for seven years.”
“My father created this. I was trying to survive it.”
“You had five years after he died.”
“I could have fixed everything after the acquisition.”
“You were transferring his crimes to my husband’s company.”
“I would have protected you.”
Julian stepped beside me.
Marcus looked from him to the wedding ring on my hand.
His expression twisted.
“You married him because of me.”
“No,” I said. “I met him after I stopped allowing you to define my choices.”
Chloe sat against the wall while an officer cut her restraints.
Ruiz approached her.
“You’re under arrest for burglary, unlawful surveillance, identity theft, and arson.”
Chloe nodded.
“I know.”
“Did you threaten Evelyn’s daughter?”
“No. Peter did. I stole the drive, but I never sent those messages.”
The recovered data later confirmed her claim. Peter’s devices contained the photographs of Emma, the messages, and an order for the doll.
Chloe had committed serious crimes, but she had also preserved records, warned us about Peter, and helped save Julian in the elevator shaft.
Her role was neither innocent nor simple.
Before officers led her away, she looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
“For which part?”
“All of it.”
I did not forgive her.
Not then.
But I believed her apology contained something real.
At three in the morning, Julian and I left Mercer Tower.
Emma was waiting at the secure house, asleep across my mother’s lap. I lifted her carefully.
Her eyes opened.
“Mommy?”
“I’m here.”
“Did you find the bad lady?”
I looked at Julian.
“We found several people who made bad choices.”
Emma considered this with the seriousness only a four-year-old could bring to such a sentence.
“Are they going to have a timeout?”
“A very long one,” Julian said.
She accepted that and fell asleep against me.
My phone rang.
Claire Bennett from the attorney general’s office sounded breathless.
“Evelyn, we recovered another file from the upload.”
“What is it?”
“A trust agreement. Raymond Mercer placed controlling ownership of the East Boston properties in the name of a hidden beneficiary.”
“Who?”
“You.”
The date showed the trust had been created during my marriage.
Marcus’s father had placed hundreds of millions in criminally burdened property under my identity.

The acquisition scandal was no longer only connected to me.
Legally, I appeared to own its darkest secret.
