Chapter 1 - THE BULLET IN THE SILVER TRAY

Elena Marlowe is working another exhausting night at Volante, an upscale restaurant where one job has never been enough to cover the debts hanging over her life. When another waitress calls in sick, Elena is assigned to a private room reserved for Damian Cross, a feared and powerful man whose presence makes even the restaurant manager nervous.

Damian arrives with five men, including his scarred right-hand man, Marcus Vale. Elena notices immediately that they behave less like wealthy businessmen and more like men accustomed to watching exits, measuring strangers, and speaking in unfinished sentences. She serves them professionally, refusing to be intimidated even when Damian's unsettling attention repeatedly follows her around the room.

At 9:43 p.m., everything changes.

A hooded stranger enters Volante through the front door and immediately reaches for a gun.

Without thinking, Elena raises the heavy silver serving tray she is carrying.

A bullet punches through it.

The impact nearly knocks her down, but the altered trajectory prevents the shot from reaching Damian.

Damian's men tackle the shooter as the restaurant erupts into panic. Elena survives without being hit, standing amid shattered espresso cups with the damaged tray still clutched in her hands.

But Damian Cross isn't watching the captured gunman.

He is staring at Elena.

Within hours, the situation becomes stranger. The shooter gives detectives Elena's full name despite Elena having never seen him before. Unknown to her, her name is already tied to a financial debt buried beneath several forged signatures. Two weeks earlier, people Elena has never met discussed her in a secret meeting.

And the bullet that almost killed Damian Cross may not have been aimed only at him.

It may have been meant to drag Elena into a war that began years before she ever carried a tray into Volante.
