Chapter 2 - Nobody Leaves the Room

"Adrian."
The man emerged slowly.
He appeared to be in his early sixties.
Tall.
Gray-haired.
Expensive dark coat.
No visible weapon.
Adrian stared at him.
"Victor Kane."
Mallory recognized the name.
Anyone who followed business news would.
Victor Kane had been Adrian's mentor and the first major investor in Vale Industries.
Six years earlier, his yacht had disappeared off the Mediterranean coast.
He had been legally declared dead.
Yet he was standing inside the restaurant.
Victor looked around the room.
His gaze stopped on Mallory.
"Who's she?"
"The reason your evening didn't go according to plan," Adrian said.
Victor smiled.
Then Whitmore whispered, "This wasn't supposed to happen here."
Adrian turned.
"So you knew."
Whitmore said nothing.
Victor sighed.
"Charles, sit down."
Whitmore obeyed.
That frightened Mallory.
The powerful attorney who had been barking orders minutes earlier suddenly looked like an employee.
Adrian noticed too.
"How long?" Adrian asked.
Victor removed his coat.
"How long what?"
"How long has Charles worked for you?"
Victor smiled.
"Wrong question."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Then give me the right one."
"How long have you worked for us?"
The words landed heavily.
Mallory watched Adrian's jaw tighten.
Victor walked toward the table and glanced at the documents.
"Your empire was never entirely yours, Adrian."
Mallory listened as years of hidden corporate history began surfacing.
Victor had funded Adrian's first company.
Whitmore had structured the original agreements.
Several holding companies controlled voting rights Adrian believed belonged to dormant investors.
Tonight's French transaction would have consolidated those hidden interests.
But Adrian wasn't supposed to understand that until it was irreversible.
"What was supposed to happen at 12:15?" Adrian asked.
Victor looked at Mallory again.
"Nothing she needs to hear."
"She stays."
"Why?"
"Because everyone I trusted tonight lied to me."
Adrian looked at Mallory.
"She didn't."
That single sentence changed her position in the room.
Victor understood immediately.
He walked closer to Mallory.
"You work here?"
"Yes."
"And you speak French?"
"Yes."
"Where did you learn?"
"My mother taught French literature."
Victor smiled faintly.
"Unfortunate."
"For you?"
The smile disappeared.
Adrian almost smiled.
Victor turned toward him.
"You've chosen an interesting ally."
"I didn't choose her. You did."
"What does that mean?"
"You made everyone else dishonest."
Victor studied him.
Then he looked toward Whitmore.
"Show him."
Whitmore hesitated.
"Now."
Whitmore opened his briefcase.
He removed a thick document.
Mallory watched Adrian read.
His expression changed slowly.
"What is it?" she asked.
Adrian didn't answer.
Victor did.
"An insurance arrangement."
Mallory's stomach tightened.
Adrian flipped another page.
Then another.
His signature appeared on the final page.
"That's not my signature."
"It looks like yours."
"I never signed this."
Whitmore looked down.
Adrian read the clause again.
If Adrian became incapacitated or died before the merger was completed, temporary control of his voting interests transferred to a trust.
Trustee:
Victor Kane.
The supposedly dead man.
Adrian stared at Whitmore.
"You forged it."
"No."
"Then who did?"
Whitmore said nothing.
Mallory looked toward Julian.
He had become unusually quiet.
Too quiet.
She noticed his right hand beneath the table.
"Adrian."
Adrian turned.
Mallory pointed.
"His hand."
The guard moved instantly.
Julian pulled something from his pocket.
A phone.
He threw it onto the floor.
The screen shattered.
The guard grabbed him.
"Let me go!"
Adrian picked up the broken device.
A countdown was still visible.
02:41.
Mallory stared.
"What happens when that reaches zero?"
Julian refused to answer.
Victor did not look surprised.
That was the answer.
Adrian grabbed Victor by the lapel.
"What happens?"
Victor remained calm.
"You should leave."
"You arranged something downstairs."
"You don't know that."
Mallory remembered the sentence.
Before you leave this room.
Not after.
Before.
She suddenly understood.
"Don't leave."
Everyone looked at her.
Adrian released Victor.
"What?"
"They want you to leave."
Victor's expression changed.
Mallory continued.
"The French sentence. Everything had to be finished before you left this room. Maybe 'finished' wasn't about killing you here."
Adrian understood.
"They need me to leave before something activates."
Victor said nothing.
Mallory looked at the countdown.
"Or they need everyone to believe you left."
Adrian's guard checked the corridor.
"Sir, we should move you somewhere secure."
"No," Mallory said.
The guard glared at her.
She ignored him.
"If Victor wanted Adrian physically removed, why come upstairs himself?"
Adrian looked at Victor.
"Good question."
Victor's calmness finally cracked.
Just a little.
Mallory noticed.
Then the countdown reached 01:00.
Whitmore began sweating.
Julian looked toward the windows.
Victor took one step backward.
Adrian saw all three reactions.
"Nobody leaves the room."
The guards locked both exits.
Thirty seconds.
Mallory could hear her own breathing.
Ten.
Nine.
Eight.
Adrian watched the phone.
Three.
Two.
One.
Nothing happened.
Then every light in the private dining room went out.
Someone screamed.
Glass shattered.
Mallory dropped behind the table.
A hand grabbed her wrist.
She nearly cried out.
"It's me," Adrian whispered.
Emergency lighting flickered on.
Victor was gone.
So was Julian.
One guard lay unconscious near the hallway.
The private elevator stood open.
Adrian looked at Mallory.
Then his remaining guard shouted from across the room.
"Sir, don't touch anything!"
Adrian turned.
The large wall screen had switched itself on.
Security footage appeared.
It showed the restaurant's underground garage.
A black sedan was waiting beside the private elevator.
Then the timestamp changed.
The footage jumped backward six years.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Mallory looked at him.
A woman appeared in the old recording.
Adrian whispered, "No."
Mallory could barely hear him.
"Who is she?"
Adrian stepped toward the screen.
"My mother."
The woman entered the same black sedan.
A second person followed.
Victor Kane.
Then a third figure appeared.
Adrian moved closer.
The image sharpened.
May you like
And Mallory heard him whisper the name of the last person she expected.
"Charles."
