Chapter 4 - The Man Behind the Fires

Rosa screamed.

Elena grabbed her mother and pulled her behind the kitchen island.

Madison crouched beside them.

Footsteps moved through the dark apartment.

Slow.

Deliberate.

“Elena.”

The voice came again.

“I didn't come to hurt you.”

Elena whispered, “That's what people who come to hurt you say.”

A flashlight appeared.

Then Adrian's voice exploded from the hallway.

“Don't move.”

Everything stopped.

Emergency lights flickered on.

Adrian stood near the entrance with Marcus.

Between them was the silver-haired man.

His hands were raised.

He looked almost amused.

Adrian's expression was murderous.

“You.”

The stranger smiled.

“Hello, Adrian.”

“You know him?” Elena asked.

Adrian didn't take his eyes off the man.

“Evan Cole.”

Madison stood.

“You said that wasn't your name.”

“It wasn't then.”

Evan looked older than his photographs.

Early fifties.

Scarred eyebrow.

Expensive coat.

Gold ring.

He glanced toward Elena.

“I gave you the photograph.”

“You threatened me.”

“I warned you.”

“ELENA IS NEXT isn't comforting.”

“Fair.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Where is Lucia?”

“Alive.”

“Where?”

“Safe.”

Adrian grabbed Evan's coat.

Marcus didn't interfere.

Elena did.

“Adrian.”

He ignored her.

“Six years.”

“I know.”

“Six years I buried an empty coffin.”

“I know.”

Adrian slammed him against the wall.

“Where is my sister?”

Evan looked directly into his eyes.

“With the FBI.”

Silence.

Adrian released him.

“What?”

Evan adjusted his coat.

“Lucia entered federal protective custody four years ago.”

Madison whispered, “Four?”

“She tried doing things your way first.”

Madison looked away.

Evan continued.

“Charles found her twice. Somebody kept leaking locations.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“From my organization?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Evan smiled without humor.

“That question nearly got me killed.”

Elena stepped forward.

“What does this have to do with my father?”

Evan's expression softened.

“Miguel Ramirez saved lives.”

“You knew him?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He worked security at Whitmore Building Seventeen.”

Elena felt Rosa beside her.

Evan continued.

“He discovered gasoline drums in a maintenance area. Reported them. Charles's people removed them before inspectors arrived.”

“Then why did Dad die?”

“Because he photographed everything first.”

Elena's eyes filled.

“Where are the photographs?”

“That's what Charles has spent eight years trying to discover.”

“He didn't have them?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Evan looked at Rosa.

Elena turned.

Her mother shook her head immediately.

“No.”

“Mrs. Ramirez.”

“I don't know anything.”

Evan reached into his pocket.

Adrian tensed.

“Slowly.”

Evan removed an old key.

Rosa gasped.

Elena recognized it.

Her father's keychain.

A small brass key with blue paint.

“Where did you get that?”

“Your father gave it to Lucia.”

Elena stared.

“That isn't possible. Dad died before Lucia met me.”

“He met Lucia before you did.”

Everything shifted again.

Evan explained.

Miguel had discovered the planned fire.

He didn't trust police because one officer had tipped off Whitmore security after his first complaint.

So he contacted a local investigative reporter.

The reporter introduced him to Evan.

Evan, at the time, worked financial security for Charles Whitmore.

He had already begun collecting evidence.

Then Evan met Lucia.

She was studying forensic accounting.

Smart.

Fearless.

Too fearless.

Together they traced property acquisitions, insurance policies, and shell companies.

Miguel supplied photographs.

Charles discovered the leak.

Miguel died three weeks later.

Officially, cardiac arrest.

Evan believed someone had tampered with his medication.

Elena sat down.

Her father had taken blood-pressure medication.

A new prescription had arrived days before his death.

She remembered the bottle.

Remembered him complaining the pills looked different.

Rosa began crying.

“I threw them away.”

Elena held her mother.

“You couldn't know.”

“I should have known.”

“No.”

Adrian looked toward Evan.

“Why didn't Lucia tell me?”

“Because one of the payments we traced went to a company associated with your family.”

Adrian went still.

“What company?”

“Moretti Harbor Logistics.”

“That was my uncle's.”

“Yes.”

Adrian understood.

“Victor.”

Evan nodded.

Victor Moretti.

Adrian's uncle.

The man who had helped raise him.

The man currently serving as chairman of Moretti Harbor Logistics.

Adrian pulled out his phone.

Evan stopped him.

“If Victor knows we're talking, Lucia dies.”

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

Elena looked at Madison.

“Where does your father fit?”

Madison laughed bitterly.

“Everywhere.”

Charles bought buildings through shell companies.

Victor arranged untraceable labor and transport.

Corrupt officials ignored safety violations.

Insurance paid after fires.

Developers purchased cleared properties.

Millions became hundreds of millions.

“And Lucia?” Elena asked.

“She found the accounting trail,” Evan said.

“So they tried killing her.”

“Eventually.”

“Eventually?”

Evan looked ashamed.

“At first Charles wanted the documents.”

“And then?”

“She wouldn't give them up.”

Elena remembered Lucia's wrists.

The bruises.

“You were there.”

Evan didn't answer.

“You let them hurt her.”

“I was trying to get her out.”

“That wasn't my question.”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

Adrian moved toward him again.

Elena stepped between them.

“Not now.”

Adrian stared at her.

She didn't move.

“We need him.”

That was the only reason Adrian stopped.

Evan looked at the flash drive Madison had brought.

“Where did you get that?”

“Lucia.”

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

“Give it to me.”

Madison pulled it away.

“Why?”

“Because if it's what I think it is, everyone in this apartment is in danger.”

Adrian said, “We're already in danger.”

“No. You don't understand.”

Evan pointed at the drive.

“Lucia created two copies.”

“One for Madison?”

“Yes.”

“And the other?”

“Miguel.”

Elena's heart stopped.

“My father?”

“He hid it before he died.”

“The key.”

Evan held it up.

“This opens a safe-deposit box.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Elena almost laughed from frustration.

“Wonderful.”

“But Lucia does.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You can contact her.”

“Yes.”

“Do it.”

“No.”

Adrian's eyes darkened.

Evan remained calm.

“She'll contact us when she's ready.”

“How convenient.”

“She appeared tonight because the investigation is ending.”

Madison frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Federal prosecutors finally have enough to move.”

“Against Charles?”

“And Victor.”

Adrian stared at him.

“When?”

“Soon.”

A phone rang.

Not Elena's.

Not Adrian's.

Evan's.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Lucia.”

Adrian stepped forward.

Evan answered.

“Where are you?”

He listened.

“What?”

Everyone watched.

“When?”

His expression hardened.

“No. Don't move.”

The call ended.

Adrian demanded, “What happened?”

Evan looked toward the window.

“Charles wasn't taking Lucia.”

“Then who was?”

“She was following him.”

“Why?”

“Because Charles agreed to testify.”

Madison whispered, “Against Victor?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked stunned.

Evan continued.

“Charles has been cooperating with federal investigators for three months.”

Madison stared at him.

“My father?”

“He wants immunity.”

Of course.

Elena almost laughed.

Men like Charles didn't discover morality.

They discovered self-preservation.

Adrian asked, “Where are they?”

Evan hesitated.

“Pier 41.”

Adrian turned toward Marcus.

Evan grabbed his arm.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“Lucia said Charles never arrived.”

“Then where is he?”

“Nobody knows.”

Elena's phone buzzed.

A new message.

This time from her brother Mateo.

She opened it.

One photograph.

Mateo bound to a chair.

Behind him stood Charles Whitmore.

Underneath were coordinates.
