Chapter 3 - The Underworld King’s Protection, the Eradication of the Abuser, and the Safe Haven Found in the Darkest ArmsTwo weeks later, the damp, bitter chill of a Chicago winter had settled over the city, but inside the sprawling, fortress-like estate on the cliffs of Lake Michigan, the atmosphere was a sanctuary of absolute warmth and unyielding security.

Trent Miller had vanished as completely as if he had never existed. Federal authorities and local police never opened an investigation—partly because Gabriel Costa’s legal apparatus ensured any missing-person inquiries were quietly redirected across state lines, and partly because Trent himself was currently working a grueling, indentured logistics detail at a remote timber camp in northern Canada, having been given a very simple choice by Noah Pierce: leave the country forever, or end up at the bottom of Lake Michigan.
Inside the private, sunlit conservatory of the Costa estate, Harper sat by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, wrapped in a soft, cream-colored cashmere throw. On the low mahogany table before her rested a porcelain cup of chamomile tea and a book she hadn't yet opened.
The bruising along her cheekbone had completely healed, leaving behind clear, unblemished skin that no longer required forty-five minutes of concealing powder and desperate prayers in front of a flickering bathroom bulb.
The double doors of the conservatory opened softly.
Gabriel walked in. He had discarded his charcoal wool coat, wearing a simple dark gray sweater that highlighted the powerful, scarred lines of his broad shoulders. He carried a small silver tray with a fresh plate of pastries.
He set the tray down on the table and pulled up a chair to sit directly opposite her.
“How is the reading going?” Gabriel asked, his deep voice carrying that familiar, grounding timbre that had first caught her attention in the Velvet Room.
“Not very well,” Harper smiled softly, setting her tea cup down. “It’s difficult to read when you have an entire syndicate boss treating your recovery like a high-security military operation.”
A rare, breathtaking smile touched the corners of Gabriel’s mouth—a genuine, unguarded expression that made him look less like an underworld king and more like a man who had finally found his peace.
“My security team is merely ensuring that your peace is uninterrupted,” Gabriel noted smoothly, leaning forward, resting his forearms against his knees. “Besides, Paul called from the Velvet Room this morning. He wanted to know if you were ever coming back to work the closing shift.”
Harper let out a light, musical laugh—a sound she hadn't realized she was capable of making. “And what did you tell him?”
“I told him to update his payroll permanently,” Gabriel replied, his asphalt eyes locking onto hers with an intense, unwavering devotion. “You don't belong in a cigar lounge carrying heavy trays, Harper. You belong somewhere safe. Somewhere where nobody ever dares to raise a hand against you again.”
Harper looked at him—the feared apex predator of Chicago’s underworld, the man who had torn her abuser’s world apart with a single word, choosing to build a fortress entirely around her.
She reached across the table, placing her hand gently over his calloused palm. Gabriel’s fingers instantly closed around hers, intertwining their hands with absolute, unyielding possession.
“I’m not hiding anymore, Gabriel,” Harper whispered, her voice steady, clear, and filled with a profound, unbreakable strength.

Gabriel’s gaze softened completely. He turned her hand over, pressing a tender, lingering kiss against her palm—a silent vow sealed in the heart of the dark, promising that the nightmares were gone forever.
Outside the glass, the winter wind whipped across the frozen waters of Lake Michigan, but inside the fortress, the cold had been permanently banished by a love forged in fire and secured by a king who would burn the world down to keep her safe.
