Chapter 7 - The Digital GhostAt precisely 10:28 PM, the secure terminal on Grayson’s desk chimed with a high-priority alert.

Grayson, who had not moved from his spot by the window for over twenty minutes, spun around and lunged for the computer. He unlocked the screen with his biometric fingerprint scanner and opened the encrypted file Marcus Vance had just uploaded.
The screen displayed a side-by-side comparison. On the left was the digital scan of the photograph Aiden had pulled from beneath the toy chest. On the right was an official archival record retrieved from an unindexed database belonging to a private medical facility in Geneva, Switzerland—the exact clinic where Lila Hale had spent her final months.
Grayson’s eyes scanned the text accompanying the archival record, and the blood instantly drained from his face.
Patient: Lila Vance-Hale (Deceased) Attending Specialist: Dr. Aris Thorne Registered Visitors / Legal Proxy: 1. Grayson Hale (Husband) 2. Emma Calloway (Legal Guardian of Record / Designated Healthcare Surrogate)
Grayson slammed both hands down onto the desk, the impact rattling the crystal tumbler.
“That's impossible,” he muttered aloud to the empty room, his voice shaking with a terrifying mix of rage and disbelief. “I handled every single medical document myself. I signed every discharge paper, every death certificate, every financial transfer. There was no surrogate. There was no second proxy.”
He clicked further into the file, pulling up Marcus’s voice memo attached to the transmission. He hit play.
Marcus’s voice filled the study, clipped and urgent. "Boss, you've got a massive blind spot. I dug into the Geneva clinic's digital archives before they were archived last year. Emma Calloway isn't some random college roommate. According to the hospital's encrypted vault, she was legally designated by Lila herself, six months before she passed, as the secondary proxy for the boys' custody trust. Not you, Grayson. Her. And get this—the background check you thought you ran? It wasn't faked by some amateur hacker. The IP address that cleared her employment application traced directly back to your own corporate legal department in Manhattan."
Grayson froze. His breath hitched in his throat.
His own legal department?
That meant someone inside his inner circle—someone with clearance to his private network, someone he trusted with his fortune and his corporate security—had deliberately cleared Emma Calloway’s path into his home.

Before Grayson could process the horrifying implications of a breach from within his own executive team, a sudden, sharp rap echoed at the heavy double doors of his third-floor study.
It wasn't a gentle knock. It was firm, deliberate, and entirely uninvited.
