Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE MORETTIS WENT TO WAR

The first helicopter passed over the lake at 10:17 p.m.
Sebastian heard it.
His glass stopped halfway to his mouth.
Emma smiled.
“That doesn’t sound like an empty hangar.”
Sebastian struck her again.
Vincent shouted from his wheelchair.
“Touch her again and I swear—”
“You’ll what?”
Sebastian turned toward his father.
“Stand up?”
Vincent’s face filled with rage.
Sebastian grabbed the transfer documents.
“Change of plan.”
He ordered two guards to move Vincent.
Another grabbed Emma.
Outside, floodlights switched off.
The compound fell into darkness.
Sebastian cursed.
“Backup power.”
Nothing happened.
Emma’s heart raced.
Daniel.
Adrian.
Rachel.
Someone had cut electricity.
A gunshot sounded outside.
Then another.
Sebastian pulled Emma close.
“You think this ends well?”
“It can.”
“For you?”
“For everyone if you surrender.”
Sebastian laughed.
“You really are a waitress.”
Emma frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“You still believe people can be reasonable.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“I’ve served enough people to know exactly how unreasonable they are.”
An explosion shook the building.
A door alarm sounded.
Guards shouted.
Vincent whispered, “Service tunnel.”
Emma looked toward him.
He nodded almost imperceptibly toward a bookshelf.
Sebastian did not notice.
Another explosion.
He ran toward the security screens.
Emma moved.
She slammed her elbow into the guard beside her and sprinted toward the shelf.
“STOP HER!”
She pulled the third book Vincent had indicated.
A latch clicked.
The shelf opened.
Emma grabbed Vincent’s wheelchair.
“Can you walk?”
“A little.”
“Good enough.”
She pushed him through the hidden doorway.
Bullets struck the wall behind them.
Emma slammed the passage closed.
Darkness.
Vincent produced a small flashlight from his pocket.
“You had that?”
“I’ve been planning escape for twelve years.”
Emma pushed his chair.
“Why didn’t you?”
“The tunnel exit requires two people. My nurses were Sebastian’s.”
They moved deeper underground.
Above them, chaos erupted.
Daniel entered the compound from the east with Rachel and a federal tactical team.
Adrian entered from the west with two private security men who had remained loyal.
Rachel hated that arrangement.
Adrian ignored her.
Daniel had one objective.
Emma.
He moved room by room.
A guard surrendered.
Another fired.
Agents returned fire.
Daniel reached the library.
Empty.
Blood on the floor.
His stomach dropped.
“EMMA!”
No answer.
Adrian entered behind him.
“Tunnel.”
“What?”
Adrian moved toward the shelf.
“Our father loved hidden rooms.”
They found the latch.
Daniel opened it.
“Emma!”
Far ahead, Emma heard him.
She stopped.
“Daniel!”
His footsteps came running.
Seconds later he appeared around the corner.
Emma had imagined this reunion differently a thousand times since learning he was alive.
Instead she was sweaty, bleeding from the lip, pushing her supposedly dead father-in-law through a tunnel beneath New Hampshire.
Daniel stopped.
“Dad.”
Vincent stared at him.
“Julian.”
Daniel’s face folded.
For one second he was not a fugitive, husband, liar, or Moretti heir.
He was somebody’s son.
Vincent stood shakily.
Daniel rushed forward.
They embraced.
Neither spoke.
Emma looked away.
Adrian appeared behind them.
Vincent saw him.
“Adrian.”
Adrian stopped.
His eyes filled but his face remained hard.
“You left us.”
Vincent nodded.
“Yes.”
“You were alive.”
“Yes.”
“I buried you.”
“I know.”
Adrian’s voice cracked.
“You let me become everything you told me not to become because I thought I had nobody left.”
Vincent stepped toward him.
“I failed you.”
Adrian did not move.
Vincent did not ask forgiveness.
He simply stood there.
Finally Adrian hugged him.
Briefly.
Angrily.
But he did.
Rachel’s voice echoed through the tunnel.
“We need to move. Sebastian is heading toward the boat dock.”
Emma looked at Daniel.
“Go.”
“I’m not leaving you.”
“Yes, you are.”
“Emma.”
“He gets away, this never ends.”
Daniel hesitated.
Emma touched his face.
It was the first affectionate touch she had given him since his return.
“I’ll stay with your father.”
Daniel covered her hand.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
He kissed her palm.
Then ran.
Adrian followed.
Rachel escorted Emma and Vincent toward the tunnel exit while agents secured the property.
Outside, Sebastian raced downhill toward the lake.
A speedboat waited.
He had one guard left.
Daniel saw him.
“SEBASTIAN!”
Sebastian turned and fired.
Daniel dove behind a tree.
Adrian approached from the opposite side.
“Nowhere left!”
Sebastian laughed.
“You boys really think winning one night fixes your family?”
Adrian fired at the boat engine.
The bullet struck metal.
Sebastian ducked.
Daniel moved closer.
“We know everything.”
“You know what Vincent wants you to know.”
“Then tell us.”
Sebastian stared toward the house.
“He abandoned me.”
Daniel lowered his gun slightly.
“He hurt you.”
Adrian looked at him.
Daniel continued.
“What he did was wrong.”
Sebastian seemed surprised.
“But Marcus didn’t abandon you. Emma didn’t. Adrian didn’t.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You punished strangers for something our father did.”
Sebastian’s jaw tightened.
“I built that family’s power.”
“No. You spent decades hiding behind other men.”
That struck him.
Sebastian aimed.
Adrian shouted.
Daniel fired first.
The bullet struck Sebastian’s shoulder.
His gun fell.
Federal agents flooded the dock.
Sebastian dropped to his knees.
For a moment it seemed finished.
Then the remaining guard emerged behind Adrian.
Emma, farther uphill with Rachel, saw him first.
“ADRIAN!”
Adrian turned.
Gunshot.
Daniel tackled his brother.
The guard missed.
Agents fired.
The guard dropped his weapon and surrendered.
Daniel lay over Adrian.
For a second neither brother moved.
Then Adrian laughed.
“You tackled me.”
Daniel rolled aside.
“Don’t make it emotional.”
“I thought you hated me.”
“I do.”
“Good.”
Agents handcuffed Sebastian.
He looked toward Daniel.
“You think you can go back to being Daniel Carter?”
Daniel stared.
“No.”
“Then who are you?”
Daniel looked toward Emma standing uphill.
For years he had treated identity like a disguise.
Julian Moretti.
Daniel Carter.
Dead man.
Husband.
Fugitive.
He finally understood.
“I’m whoever I choose to become after this.”
Sebastian was taken away.
By dawn, the compound was under federal control.
Documents recovered from Sebastian’s office connected him to bribery, extortion, attempted murder, kidnapping, financial crimes, and Marcus’s network.
Vincent agreed to testify.
Adrian agreed to open Moretti company records.
That decision shocked everyone.
Daniel asked his brother privately, “You know what they might find.”
“Yes.”
“You could lose everything.”
Adrian looked toward the sunrise.
“Maybe I should.”
Daniel nodded.
“Dad built something poisoned.”
“Then we clean it.”
“For once?”
Adrian smiled.
“For once.”
Emma sat on the ambulance bumper while a medic treated her lip.
Daniel approached slowly.
“Can I sit?”
“You’re asking permission now?”
“I’m learning.”
She moved over.
He sat beside her.
For a long time they watched the lake.
Daniel spoke first.
“When I disappeared, I told myself every day away from you was proof I loved you.”
Emma listened.
“I understand now that sometimes sacrifice becomes vanity.”
She looked at him.
He continued.
“I liked believing I was the heroic one suffering alone.”
“That’s surprisingly self-aware.”
“I’ve had a difficult week.”
Emma almost laughed.
Daniel looked at her.
“I won’t ask you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
“I won’t ask you to stay married.”
Her throat tightened.
“I won’t even ask you to trust me yet.”
“Then what are you asking?”
“One chance.”
“For what?”
“To tell you everything. No secrets. No protection you didn’t choose. No decisions about your life without you.”
Emma looked toward Vincent speaking with Adrian.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
“Even ugly things?”
“Especially those.”
She considered him.
“I can’t promise we get back what we had.”
Daniel nodded.
“I don’t want what we had.”
That hurt.
Then he continued.
“I want something that doesn’t require lies.”
Emma looked down at the ring.
Sebastian had dropped it during the chaos.
Rachel recovered it.
Emma removed it.
Daniel watched.
She placed it in his hand.
His face fell.
Then she closed his fingers around it.
“This belonged to your old life.”
Daniel looked at her.
“If you want a new life with me…”
She paused.
“…you don’t get to build it with symbols from secrets.”
Daniel swallowed.
“What do I do with it?”
“Your choice.”
He stared at the ring.
Then walked toward Vincent.
He placed it in his father’s palm.
Vincent closed his hand around it and cried.
Emma watched.
Maybe some objects belonged to history.
Maybe love did not mean carrying every piece of the past forever.
For the first time in two years, Emma did not feel like a widow.
She also did not feel completely like a wife.
May you like
She felt like herself.
And that was enough to begin.
