Chapter 9 - The Dead Man Who Came Back

Miguel Alvarez called his daughter at noon.

Lena answered on speaker.

“Dad?”

A man's tired voice replied.

“I'm sorry.”

Alvarez sat down.

Twenty-one years disappeared from her face.

She suddenly looked like a daughter who had spent most of her life waiting for one impossible phone call.

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere safe.”

“Why didn't you come home?”

Silence.

Then:

“Because Anthony Kane knew where you and your mother lived.”

Alvarez closed her eyes.

Miguel had not died.

He had vanished deliberately after discovering Kane's corruption reached federal investigators.

He feared returning would expose his family.

So he became a ghost.

Dominic looked toward Diana.

Neither missed the parallel.

Another man protecting someone through absence.

Another family forced to live with the consequences.

“What does Elena have to do with this?” Dominic asked.

Miguel paused.

“She helped me disappear.”

Dominic stared.

“Elena?”

“She knew Maria.”

“I know that.”

“She knew Daniel too.”

Diana moved closer to the phone.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Miguel's voice softened.

“Daniel Martinez was a good man.”

Diana's throat tightened.

“Why did you take Elena?”

“I didn't. She contacted me.”

“Why?”

“Victor found her.”

Dominic's face hardened.

Miguel explained that Elena had received threats.

Rather than endanger the estate, she activated an old emergency contact.

Miguel.

“Where is she now?”

“With me.”

“Bring her back.”

“Not yet.”

Dominic's voice became dangerous.

“You disappeared twenty-one years ago. You do not get to dictate terms.”

Diana touched his arm.

He stopped.

“Mr. Alvarez,” she said, “what does Victor want?”

“The same thing his father wanted.”

“The ledger?”

“No.”

Everyone froze.

“What else is there?”

“Names are useful. Accounts are useful. But Victor is afraid of a recording.”

Diana remembered Maria's cassette.

“Another tape?”

“Video.”

“Of what?”

“The night Maria died.”

Dominic went pale.

“There was no camera.”

“Yes, there was.”

Miguel explained.

A nearby store had security footage.

Police reported it destroyed.

It was not.

Miguel took the recording.

It showed who fired.

Who ordered the attack.

Who fled.

And who approached Maria before she died.

Dominic's hands tightened.

“Where is it?”

“I hid it.”

“Where?”

Miguel hesitated.

“Maria knew.”

Diana stared.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“She hid it?”

“She was supposed to.”

Diana thought about Box 317.

The wooden angel.

The childhood house.

“Why wasn't it with the ledger?”

“Because Maria didn't trust keeping everything together.”

Of course.

Her mother divided evidence.

If one piece was discovered, another might survive.

“Do you know where?”

“No.”

Diana closed her eyes.

Think.

Maria's habits.

Her mother's favorite places.

The library.

Church.

Home.

Christmas ornaments.

Daniel's memories.

Then she remembered something Eddie once mocked.

Maria donated clothes every year to a church shelter.

After Daniel died, she gave the church one locked trunk.

She told Diana it contained old winter coats.

Diana never saw inside.

“St. Catherine's.”

Dominic looked at her.

“What?”

“My mother's church.”

Miguel heard.

“Yes.”

Diana's pulse jumped.

“You know?”

“I told Maria to find somewhere nobody in our world would search.”

“A church.”

“Exactly.”

Miguel gave them a name.

Father Thomas.

The priest had died years earlier, but parish storage still existed.

Police secured the church.

In the basement, volunteers found Maria's trunk.

Inside were indeed winter coats.

Underneath them was a false bottom.

Diana removed it.

A VHS tape rested beneath.

Her hands trembled.

Dominic stood near the doorway.

“I don't know if I want to watch.”

“You don't have to,” he said.

“Yes, I do.”

They played it in a small parish office.

Grainy black-and-white footage.

A street.

Cars.

Maria.

Dominic.

Then men approaching.

Gunfire.

Diana stopped breathing.

Her mother moved.

The image showed Maria stepping toward Dominic at the exact moment the shooter fired.

She fell.

Dominic caught her.

Then another figure appeared in the distance.

Eddie.

Diana's stomach twisted.

He wasn't holding a weapon.

He was running toward Maria.

Another man grabbed him and dragged him away.

Vincent Cross.

Dominic stared.

“He was there.”

The recording continued.

Vincent spoke to the shooter.

Even without audio, the hierarchy was obvious.

Vincent gave orders.

The shooter obeyed.

Eddie tried to return.

Vincent struck him.

Then they fled.

Diana covered her mouth.

Eddie had lied many times.

But not about this.

He had not fired.

He had not ordered Maria's death.

He may even have tried to help her.

That did not erase his later abuse.

But truth mattered.

Alvarez paused the image.

“There's another person.”

A car across the street.

Someone sitting inside.

Miguel had written a note on the tape label.

Anthony Kane.

Victor's father.

The conspiracy was documented.

But Victor himself was not there.

“This destroys the legacy,” Dominic said. “Not Victor.”

Diana looked at him.

“Then we use the legacy to make his people abandon him.”

Alvarez nodded.

“If financial networks collapse, he'll panic.”

“He already is.”

Dominic's phone rang.

Miguel.

“Victor knows you found the tape.”

“How?”

“Someone inside the church contacted him.”

Alvarez swore.

“Leave now.”

They moved.

Outside, snow had begun falling heavily.

Diana climbed into the SUV.

Rook jumped in beside her.

Dominic entered.

The vehicle accelerated.

Three blocks later, a truck struck them.

Metal screamed.

Glass exploded.

The SUV spun.

Diana's head slammed backward.

Rook crashed against the seat but stayed upright.

Dominic grabbed Diana.

The vehicle stopped sideways.

Men appeared through the snow.

“Out!” the driver shouted.

Gunfire erupted.

Dominic pulled Diana through the opposite door.

They ran into an alley.

Rook stayed close.

Diana's ribs burned.

“Dominic!”

“Keep moving.”

They reached a locked gate.

Dead end.

Footsteps approached.

Dominic turned.

Three men entered.

He moved Diana behind him.

Rook growled.

The first attacker raised a weapon.

Then another gunshot came from the rooftop.

The attacker fell.

A second.

The next man dropped his weapon.

Dominic stared upward.

A figure stood on the fire escape.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Holding a rifle.

Miguel Alvarez.

“Move!” he shouted.

They escaped through a side passage.

Twenty minutes later, inside a secure police building, Diana finally met the dead detective.

Miguel looked at his daughter first.

Lena stood frozen.

Then she punched him.

Hard.

Miguel staggered.

Diana blinked.

Alvarez immediately hugged him.

She cried against his shoulder.

“I hate you.”

“I know.”

“You were alive.”

“I know.”

“You missed everything.”

“I know.”

Dominic looked toward Diana.

Again the parallel.

Diana whispered, “Don't even think about disappearing again.”

“I wasn't.”

“Good.”

Miguel eventually turned toward her.

“You have Daniel's eyes.”

Everyone kept saying she looked like someone she had lost.

Today she chose to accept it as love rather than burden.

“What happens now?” Diana asked.

Miguel looked at the evidence on the table.

“Now we make Victor believe he has already lost.”

Dominic frowned.

“And if he doesn't?”

Miguel's expression became grim.

“He'll come for Diana himself.”

A phone rang.

Diana looked down.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Victor Kane spoke for the first time.

“Hello, Diana.”

His voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

“You've made this unnecessarily complicated.”

Diana looked at Dominic.

“What do you want?”

Victor laughed softly.

“You know exactly what I want.”

“The evidence?”

“No.”

Diana's stomach tightened.

“I want Dominic Cross.”

The room went silent.

Victor continued.

“Bring him to me tomorrow night, and everyone else walks away.”

Diana looked at Dominic.

Victor's final words were almost a whisper.

“Or I'll show you how many people can die because one man refused to keep his promise.”

The call ended.

And Diana realized Victor had discovered the one weapon more powerful than fear.

Dominic's guilt.

May you like
