Chapter 3 - THE FORGED DEED CONSPIRACY

The autumn wind off the Charles River was sharp and unforgiving as I stepped out of the hotel lobby and crossed Dartmouth Street. The flashing blue and red emergency lights painted the brick facades of Commonwealth Avenue in frantic, rhythmic pulses. A crowd of wealthy neighbors and dog-walkers had already gathered on the sidewalk, murmuring among themselves as three police cruisers sat idling at the curb.

When I entered the lobby, Walter gave me a grim, respectful nod. "They're bringing them down the private elevator now, Miss Clara. Mr. Vance arrived five minutes ago."

Marcus Vance stepped out from the lounge. At sixty-two, with silver hair and tailored bespoke charcoal suits, Marcus was not just one of the most feared estate litigators in Massachusetts; he had been Arthur’s closest friend and legal confidant for forty years.

"Clara," Marcus said, his voice deep and steady. "Are you holding up?"

"I’ve never been clearer in my life, Marcus," I replied evenly.

The elevator doors chimed and slid open.

Richard came out first, his tie askew, his expensive wool coat rumpled, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles jumped. Eleanor followed, refusing to meet anyone's gaze, her head held up in a pathetic attempt at aristocratic defiance despite the steel cuffs locking her wrists behind her back. Behind them, Chloe was hyperventilating, sobbing uncontrollably as an officer guided her toward the front doors.

Then Richard saw me standing beside Marcus Vance.

His eyes widened in shock before igniting into pure, unbridled fury. "Clara! What the hell is the meaning of this circus? Tell these officers to release us immediately! Have you lost your mind?"

"Hello, Richard," I said, intentionally omitting the word Dad. The word had died in my throat the moment I heard him plot my ruin in the sunroom.

"You ungrateful little viper!" Eleanor hissed, lunging half a step toward me before the female officer restrained her. "After everything we’ve done for you! We raised you! We gave you everything! And you stage a police raid to humiliate your own flesh and blood in front of the entire neighborhood?"

"You didn't give me this home, Eleanor," I said softly, my voice cutting through her screeching. "Grandpa Arthur did. And you didn't come here today to visit. You came with a commercial locksmith and a forged power of attorney to steal it."

"It wasn't stealing!" Chloe wailed, her voice echoing off the marble lobby walls. "It was an advance! Clara, you don't understand, they're going to ruin me! I owe people money! You have everything and you never share! You're a monster!"

"Quiet, all of you," Detective Miller commanded, ushering them toward the glass doors. "Ms. Sterling, please come down to the precinct with Mr. Vance to execute the formal complaint and provide the digital recordings."

"We will be there in twenty minutes, Detective," Marcus replied smoothly.

As the police pushed my family into the backseats of the cruisers, Marcus turned to me, his expression turning grave. He motioned toward the lobby conference room. "Come inside, Clara. There is something you need to see before we head to the station."

We sat down at the mahogany table. Marcus unzipped his leather briefcase and pulled out a certified legal dossier stamped by the Suffolk County Registry of Deeds.

"What is this?" I asked.

"While you were monitoring their physical entry today, my firm ran an expedited emergency audit on the municipal filing queue," Marcus said, placing a document before me. "Your father didn't just carry a fake power of attorney to show the locksmith. Yesterday afternoon, a fraudulent quitclaim deed was uploaded to the county portal by an LLC called Beacon Horizon Capital."

I picked up the document. My eyes scanned the page. At the bottom was a forged transfer signature bearing the name Clara Sterling, alongside an official state notary stamp.

"They didn't just want to stage your apartment for sale, Clara," Marcus revealed, his eyes cold with outrage. "Richard created a shell company under Chloe’s name. They executed a fraudulent transfer of title forty-eight hours ago. If you had actually boarded that flight to Paris, the closing would have been finalized by next Tuesday, and the four-point-two million dollar wire would have vanished into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands before your plane even touched back down at Logan Airport."

A chill ran down my spine. This wasn't merely a desperate family overstepping boundaries; this was high-level, premeditated financial felony.

"Who notarized this?" I demanded, pointing to the crooked blue stamp at the bottom of the deed.

"A private notary named Gregory Hayes," Marcus said. "A man who happens to be on the payroll of Richard’s accounting firm. Hayes has already committed state fraud. But Clara, that’s not the most dangerous part."

Marcus leaned forward, lowering his voice. "We checked the credit facilities attached to Chloe’s name and this shell corporation. Chloe didn't just blow her money on luxury bags and failed startups. She took out an illicit three-million-dollar private loan from an unregulated mezzanine fund tied to Boston's underground predatory lenders. The note comes due this Friday at midnight."

I stared at Marcus as the puzzle pieces slammed into place. "That's why they were moving with such reckless speed. That's why Richard was willing to break down my door in broad daylight."

"Exactly," Marcus nodded grimly. "If they didn't deliver the title to your apartment by Friday, the people who funded Chloe’s debts were not going to sue her in civil court. They were going to destroy your father's firm and take everything they own."

I looked out the window at the empty street where the police cruisers had just disappeared.

"Then let them try," I said softly. "Because I'm not signing a single piece of paper. And I'm not dropping a single charge."

Marcus smiled a tight, dangerous smile. "Good. Then let us go to the precinct and ensure none of them see the outside of a jail cell before Friday night."
