Chapter 5 - The Reckoning of the Families

Salvatore Vance didn't hesitate.
The moment Leo Moretti shifted his gun toward Renley, Salvatore stepped directly into the line of fire, his massive frame completely shielding the twelve-year-old girl.
"Look at me, Moretti!" Salvatore roared, his voice shaking the heavy iron pans hanging above them like thunder. "Your war is with me! Touch this child, and I swear on my brother's grave, there isn't a city on this earth where you will sleep safe!"
Leo Moretti laughed, a cold, shrill sound. "You're in no position to bargain, Vance! You have three men! I have fifteen! Give me the ledgers and get on your knees!"
"He doesn't have three men, Leo," a cold, calm voice suddenly resonated from the kitchen's front entrance.
Leo spun around, his face instantly draining of color.
Standing in the main doorway of the community kitchen were fifty armed federal agents wearing dark tactical jackets marked FBI, flanked by twenty state police cruisers whose red and blue lights illuminated the rain outside the high windows.
At the front of the federal strike force stood Special Agent Arthur Vance—Salvatore's estranged nephew, who had spent ten years working in the Justice Department's Organized Crime Division.
"Drop your weapons! ALL OF THEM!" Agent Vance commanded over a megaphone. "The entire building is surrounded! We have satellite video feeds of your assault on the Vance estate and full audio recordings of your confession in this room!"
Leo Moretti's hands began to shake violently. "This... this is a setup!"
"No, Leo," Salvatore said softly, stepping forward from behind the pantry counter, holding up the black ledger and his phone, which had been broadcasting a live encrypted stream directly to the Federal District Court for the last twenty minutes. "This is Walter's legacy."
Realizing he was completely ruined, Leo Moretti lost his mind. He raised his nickel-plated revolver directly at Agent Vance!
BANG! BANG! BANG!
A brief, violent burst of suppressed fire from four FBI snipers positioned on the kitchen roof shattered the high glass skylights.
Leo Moretti dropped his weapon, falling to the concrete floor as federal agents swarmed the room, tackling the remaining fifteen Moretti enforcers to the ground, slapping heavy steel handcuffs on their wrists.
Within five minutes, the dangerous syndicate that had terrorized the city for forty years was dismantled completely, its entire leadership taken into federal custody without a single innocent casualty.
Agent Vance walked into the pantry, stepping over the fallen weapons, and approached his uncle.
The two men—one a federal prosecutor, the other a feared mafia boss—stared at each other for a long, heavy moment.
"Is it really over, Arthur?" Salvatore asked quietly, his voice old and tired.
Agent Vance looked at the black ledgers resting in his uncle's hand, then down at the faded blue kitchen apron.
"With these ledgers, the Moretti family is finished forever," Agent Vance said firmly. "And because of your full cooperation tonight, Uncle Julian... the Justice Department has granted you full immunity under the Federal Witness Protection program."
Agent Vance turned his head to look at Renley Hart, who was sitting quietly on a flour crate, her red bicycle resting beside her, her hands wrapped around her cold cup of tea.
"And what about the girl?" Agent Vance asked softly.
May you like
Salvatore walked over to Renley, dropping to one knee before her, his dark eyes filled with a profound, fatherly devotion that cut through forty years of dark history.
"This girl saved my soul," Salvatore said clearly, so every federal agent in the room could hear. "She isn't just a delivery girl anymore. She is Walter's heir."
