Chapter 3 - Locker 418

Grand Central Terminal had never seemed dangerous to Elena before.

She had passed through it hundreds of times.

Coffee in one hand.

Phone in the other.

Running late for work.

Complaining about tourists.

That night, everything looked different.

Every stranger became suspicious.

Every person standing too long near a column seemed to be watching.

Adrian walked beside her.

Two security men remained several paces behind.

“You believe Daniel?” Elena asked.

“No.”

“You answered quickly.”

“He spent thirty years lying.”

“What if Vittorio did too?”

Adrian looked at her.

“You think my father is responsible?”

“I think I met him three weeks ago.”

“And Daniel?”

“I’ve known him since childhood.”

“That doesn’t make him trustworthy.”

“No.”

Elena looked toward the vast ceiling.

“But it means I know how he behaved around my mother.”

“How?”

“Protective.”

“Manipulators often look protective.”

“So do mafia bosses.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“Fair.”

They reached the lockers.

418 stood near the end of the row.

Elena inserted the small key.

Her hand trembled.

“You don’t have to open it tonight,” Adrian said.

She looked at him.

“Yes, I do.”

The lock clicked.

Inside was a dark leather bag.

Nothing else.

Adrian scanned the area.

“Take it.”

They returned to the SUV before opening it.

Inside the bag were documents.

Dozens.

Bank records.

Birth certificates.

Letters.

Photographs.

A small cassette tape.

And a sealed envelope.

Across the front, in Sofia’s handwriting:

FOR ELENA.

Elena touched it.

Her eyes burned.

“Open it,” Adrian said quietly.

She did.

My darling Elena,

If you are reading this, then I failed to explain everything before I left you.

Please forgive me.

There are truths I wanted to tell you every day of your life, but truth can be dangerous when powerful men fear it.

Your father is Vittorio Bellandi.

Elena stopped.

Adrian said nothing.

She continued.

He loved me once.

I believe part of him always did.

But love was never enough to protect us from his family.

Daniel helped me escape after Vittorio’s father discovered my pregnancy. He gave me money, documents, and a new name.

Elena looked up sharply.

“Daniel helped her.”

Adrian frowned.

Your grandfather ordered Daniel to tell Vittorio that I had died. Daniel obeyed because the alternative was my death and yours.

Years later, Daniel told me Vittorio’s father was gone and that we could return.

I refused.

By then Vittorio had married Adriana Moretti and had a son. I believed returning would destroy another woman’s family.

That was my choice.

Not Daniel’s.

Adrian looked away.

Elena continued.

But there is something you must know.

After Vittorio’s wife died, Daniel discovered evidence suggesting someone inside the Bellandi organization was responsible.

He believed the same people who once threatened me were still operating.

He told me never to contact Vittorio until he found proof.

If you are reading this, he may not have found it.

Or he may be dead.

Trust carefully.

The envelope contained one more page.

A list of names.

Five men.

Four were unfamiliar.

The fifth was someone Adrian recognized.

His face hardened.

“What?”

Elena showed him.

Marco Bellandi.

“Who is he?”

“My cousin.”

“Daniel’s son?”

“No.”

Adrian stared at the paper.

“My father’s cousin.”

“Is that bad?”

“Yes.”

“How bad?”

“He controls our shipping division.”

Elena leaned back.

“And?”

“And if someone inside the family wanted access to everything—money, warehouses, security schedules, private residences—Marco would have it.”

Adrian picked up another document.

A series of transfers.

Large amounts of money.

Shell companies.

Offshore accounts.

“This is laundering.”

“Through your businesses?”

“Yes.”

“Could Vittorio know?”

“Possibly.”

She watched him.

“You really don’t trust your father completely.”

Adrian gave her a humorless smile.

“In our family, complete trust is how people die.”

The cassette tape sat between them.

Elena held it up.

“Do you have anything that plays this?”

Adrian looked offended.

“I’m thirty-four, not ninety.”

Twenty minutes later, one of his men brought a portable cassette player from a storage facility.

Elena inserted the tape.

Sofia’s voice filled the SUV.

Elena’s eyes closed instantly.

“Elena, if you’re hearing this, then I’m sorry.”

Her mother sounded younger.

Stronger.

“There is something I never wrote down because paper can be stolen.”

A pause.

“The man who threatened me when I was pregnant was not Vittorio.”

Elena held her breath.

“It was his uncle, Carlo Bellandi. Carlo believed Vittorio was too weak because he wanted a life outside the family business.”

Adrian whispered, “Carlo died fifteen years ago.”

The tape continued.

“Daniel helped me escape. But years later he told me Carlo had not acted alone.”

Paper rustled in the recording.

“There was another man. Someone younger. Someone who inherited Carlo’s ambitions.”

Elena looked at Adrian.

Sofia’s next words made him go still.

“Marco.”

Silence.

“Daniel believed Marco killed Vittorio’s wife because Adriana discovered money missing from the company.”

Adrian’s face lost color.

Elena lowered the cassette player slightly.

The recording continued.

“If Elena ever returns to the Bellandi family, Marco may see her as a threat.”

“Why?” Elena whispered.

The tape answered.

“Because Vittorio’s original estate documents named his firstborn child as controlling heir.”

Adrian stared at Elena.

“What?”

“If my daughter was born before Adrian, then legally she may inherit controlling authority.”

The tape clicked off.

Neither moved.

Finally Elena said, “I don’t want anything.”

Adrian was still staring at her.

“That doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me.”

“It won’t matter to Marco.”

Elena’s stomach tightened.

“So if he learns I’m Vittorio’s daughter…”

“He already knows.”

“How?”

Adrian held up her destroyed apartment as an answer without saying it.

His phone rang.

Security.

He answered.

“What?”

His expression changed.

“When?”

He listened.

“We’re coming.”

He hung up.

Elena’s pulse quickened.

“What happened?”

“My father collapsed.”

They raced back to the estate.

Vittorio was conscious when they arrived, but weak.

The private physician stood beside him.

“Cardiac episode,” the doctor said. “Stress-related.”

Elena immediately shifted back into nurse mode.

She checked Vittorio’s medication chart.

Something was wrong.

She looked again.

“Who gave him his evening tablets?”

A staff nurse raised her hand.

“I did.”

Elena examined the pill organizer.

Then one loose tablet on the tray.

Her blood ran cold.

“This isn’t his medication.”

The room froze.

The physician took it.

“What is it?”

Elena knew before he answered.

“A beta blocker at nearly four times his prescribed dose.”

Adrian turned toward the staff nurse.

Her face went pale.

“I took them from his normal bottle.”

Elena opened the medication cabinet.

One bottle had been replaced.

Same label.

Same pharmacy branding.

Wrong tablets.

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“Someone tried to kill him.”

Vittorio opened his eyes.

“Elena.”

She moved beside him.

“I’m here.”

His fingers closed around hers.

“You found it.”

“The locker?”

He nodded weakly.

“You knew?”

“Sofia told me once… she kept insurance.”

Elena felt anger rise.

“You knew she was alive?”

Vittorio shook his head.

“Not until two years ago.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“What?”

Vittorio closed his eyes.

“Daniel told me.”

The room became silent.

Elena stared.

“You said you thought she died thirty years ago.”

“I did.”

“Until two years ago?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you find me?”

Vittorio looked ashamed.

“Because Daniel told me Sofia had one final request.”

“What?”

“That I leave you alone.”

Elena pulled her hand away.

“Convenient.”

“Elena—”

“Everybody keeps deciding what is best for me.”

Vittorio tried to sit higher.

“I wanted to find you.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

He looked toward Adrian.

“Because Daniel said Sofia had proof that someone inside this house killed Adriana.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“And that whoever did it would come after Elena if they knew she existed.”

Elena stared.

“So you left me outside your family because you thought that kept me safe.”

“Yes.”

Adrian said quietly, “It didn’t.”

A security guard entered.

“Mr. Bellandi.”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

“We checked the hallway footage.”

“And?”

“The medication cabinet was accessed at 6:12.”

“By who?”

The guard hesitated.

Then showed him the tablet.

A figure appeared on screen.

Older.

Silver-haired.

Wearing a dark coat.

Elena recognized him instantly.

Daniel.

Adrian’s jaw hardened.

“He poisoned Father.”

Vittorio looked at the image.

“No.”

“He was at the cabinet.”

“No.”

“How can you defend him?”

Vittorio stared at the screen.

“Because Daniel walks with a limp.”

Adrian looked again.

The man in the footage did not.

Elena leaned closer.

“That isn’t Daniel.”

The figure turned slightly toward the camera.

His face became visible.

Adrian stopped breathing.

“Marco.”

Then another security guard entered.

“We have a problem.”

Adrian turned.

“What now?”

“Mr. Marco Bellandi is downstairs.”

Elena’s heart hammered.

“Why?”

The guard looked at her.

May you like

“He says he came to meet Vittorio’s daughter.”
