Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Beside Him

Dominic reached for the door.
Sofia grabbed his wrist.
"Don't."
He looked at her hand as though remembering she was real.
"The name is wrong."
"It isn't."
"It has to be."
Marco stepped closer to the screen.
The name remained visible.
ADRIAN KELLER.
Dominic's head of security.
The man who had recruited half the guards protecting them.
The man who had driven Dominic home after his father's funeral.
The man who had stood ten feet away when Dominic proposed to Elena.
Adrian had been with Dominic for twelve years.
Elena remembered him as quiet, formal, almost painfully respectful.
He called her Mrs. Vale even after she repeatedly told him to use Elena.
"Where is he?" Dominic asked.
Luca checked his radio.
No answer.
Marco tried another channel.
Nothing.
Dominic opened the door.
The corridor was empty.
Adrian had been there minutes earlier.
Now he was gone.
So were two guards.
Dominic looked toward Marco.
"Lock building."
"Already—"
A deep metallic clang echoed below.
The service entrance.
Dominic ran.
Elena followed.
He turned.
"Stay with Sofia."
"No."
"Elena."
"Stop deciding that."
"Someone is trying to kill you."
"And apparently everyone I've ever trusted has lied to me. We're even."
Sofia almost smiled.
Dominic didn't.
But he allowed Elena to follow.
They reached the kitchen.
Rear door open.
Rain blowing inside.
Tire tracks led away.
Adrian had escaped.
Marco swore.
Dominic stared into the darkness.
"He knew about the recording."
Victor joined them.
"He probably sent the envelope."
"Why warn us?"
"To force Elena to open the chip."
Dominic turned.
Victor continued.
"He couldn't decrypt Gabriel's files. He needed her."
Elena understood.
"The threats were designed to make us investigate."
Sofia nodded.
"And lead him to File Seventeen."
Marco stared at the hallway.
"He was listening."
Dominic's anger became frighteningly quiet.
"So now he knows we know."
A phone buzzed.
Elena's.
Unknown number.
Dominic took it.
A photograph appeared.
Their penthouse.
Taken from inside Elena's bedroom.
Beneath it:
MIDNIGHT. PIER NINE. BRING THE CHIP.
Dominic typed:
NO.
Response came instantly.
THEN ASK ELENA WHERE HER BROTHER IS.
Elena stared.
"My brother?"
Dominic looked at her.
"You don't have a brother."
"I don't."
Sofia closed her eyes.
Elena saw it.
"What?"
Sofia said nothing.
"Sofia."
Dominic turned toward his mother.
"What does that mean?"
Sofia sat slowly.
"Gabriel had a son."
Elena felt the room tilt.
"No."
"Before you."
"My father would have told me."
"He didn't know until years later."
"Who?"
Sofia looked at Dominic.
"Adrian."
Everything stopped.
Elena stared.
No.
Adrian Keller.
Her father's son?
Her half brother?
Dominic spoke first.
"Explain."
Sofia did.
Gabriel had been twenty-one when he briefly dated a woman named Marianne Keller.
They separated before she realized she was pregnant.
She never told Gabriel.
Adrian learned the truth as an adult.
By then Gabriel had married Elena's mother and had Elena.
Adrian approached him privately.
Gabriel tried to build a relationship.
But Adrian wanted more.
Recognition.
A place in the Serrano company.
A public acknowledgment.
Gabriel hesitated because Marianne begged him not to disrupt Adrian's life.
Adrian interpreted hesitation as rejection.
Then Charles Mercer found him.
"He recruited Adrian," Sofia said.
"Because of my father?" Elena asked.
"Because resentment is useful."
Dominic's eyes hardened.
Adrian had entered his organization under Mercer's guidance.
By the time Mercer died, Adrian was positioned perfectly to inherit the Steward role.
Elena sat.
The man who arranged their security.
The man who stood outside their wedding.
Her half brother.
"He hates me."
Sofia shook her head.
"He may hate what you represent."
"Same difference."
"No," Dominic said. "It isn't."
Elena looked at him.
Dominic crouched in front of her.
"For people like Adrian, hatred is often easier than grief."
She stared at him.
"You sound like you understand."
"I do."
Of course he did.
Dominic spent fifteen years believing his mother had been murdered because somebody betrayed her.
He built his entire adult personality around loss.
Elena touched his face.
His eyes softened.
Then he remembered everyone watching and stood quickly.
Marco almost smiled.
Dominic pointed at him.
"Don't."
"I said nothing."
"You thought it loudly."
They returned to the penthouse before dawn using vehicles from a secure secondary site.
Dominic changed every security team.
Nobody associated with Adrian remained inside.
At six in the morning, Elena stood near the kitchen window drinking coffee.
Dominic approached.
"You should sleep."
"You first."
"I can't."
"Neither can I."
He leaned against the counter.
For a while neither spoke.
Then Elena asked:
"Why did you put your head on my lap?"
He looked almost uncomfortable.
That fascinated her.
Dominic could order fifty armed men into a warehouse without blinking.
But affection embarrassed him.
"I was tired."
"That's not all."
"No."
"What happened during those nineteen hours?"
He stared into his coffee.
"Adrian told me someone inside the organization was selling information."
Elena waited.
"I spent the day interrogating people I had known for years."
"Did you find anything?"
"No."
"Because he was the one selling it."
"Probably."
Dominic rubbed his jaw.
"I came home realizing I didn't know who I trusted anymore."
Elena's voice softened.
"So you put your head on my lap."
"I knew I trusted you."
That simple sentence nearly broke her.
She stepped closer.
Dominic looked at her.
"Don't."
"What?"
"Look at me like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you're going to forgive everything."
"I'm not."
"Good."
"I'm still furious you hid my father's connection."
"I know."
"But I'm here."
Dominic looked down.
Elena touched his hand.
"You can be feared by the entire city and still be tired, Dominic."
He gave a quiet laugh.
"Don't tell Marco."
"Too late. He has photographic evidence."
"Then Marco has a short future."
From the doorway, Marco said, "I heard that."
Elena laughed.
For one brief moment, the penthouse felt almost normal.
Then Marco's phone rang.
His expression changed immediately.
"Boss."
Dominic turned.
"We found Adrian."
"Where?"
"Pier Nine."
"Of course."
"He's not alone."
"How many?"
"At least twenty."
Dominic nodded.
"We move in thirty minutes."
Elena stood.
"I'm coming."
"No."
She opened her mouth.
Dominic raised a hand.
"Before you argue, listen."
She folded her arms.
"Impress me."
"Adrian wants you there. That means bringing you gives him the advantage."
"He wants the chip."
"He wants both."
"Then give him neither."
Dominic looked at Marco.
Marco nodded.
"We send a decoy team."
Sofia entered.
"Adrian will know."
Dominic looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because I taught Gabriel something Mercer never knew."
She walked to Elena's pendant.
"There are two chips."
Elena frowned.
Sofia turned the emerald setting over.
A second compartment opened.
Inside was another tiny device.
Dominic stared.
"What is that?"
"Gabriel's insurance."
Elena looked at Sofia.
"What does it contain?"
"Everything Adrian has done since taking Mercer's place."
"How?"
"Gabriel kept gathering evidence until his death."
Dominic picked up the chip.
"Then this ends him."
Sofia looked troubled.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because the final file is unfinished."
Marco inserted the chip into an isolated laptop.
Hundreds of documents appeared.
Police payments.
Judges.
Businesses.
Murders ordered.
Blackmail.
Then the last folder.
ADRIAN KELLER — CONTINGENCY.
Inside was a video recorded by Gabriel.
Elena pressed play.
Her father appeared.
"If Adrian ever becomes Steward, do not kill him."
Dominic laughed coldly.
"That's unfortunate."
Gabriel continued.
"Because Adrian is not the final authority."
Dominic's smile disappeared.
"Someone else recruited Mercer. Someone else created the Steward system."
Sofia whispered, "No."
Gabriel looked frightened.
"I discovered the identity tonight."
The video glitched.
His face froze.
Audio returned.
"The person behind everything is someone Dominic believes died before he was born."
Dominic stared at Sofia.
She looked terrified.
Gabriel spoke one final name.
The file corrupted before they could hear it.
Marco tried recovery.
Nothing.
Elena looked at Sofia.
"Who died before Dominic was born?"
Sofia didn't answer.
Dominic noticed.
"Mother."
Her eyes filled.
"Your grandfather."
Dominic frowned.
"Alessandro Vale?"
"He supposedly died six months before you were born."
"Supposedly?"
Sofia turned toward the window.
Before she could explain, every screen inside the penthouse went black.
Then one image appeared across all of them.
An old man sitting behind a desk.
Silver hair.
Black suit.
Vale family ring.
Dominic stared.
May you like
The old man smiled into the camera.
"Hello, grandson."
