Chapter 3 - The Awakening at Dawn

The morning sun broke over the skyline of Boston, casting long, golden fingers across the manicured lawns of the Blackwell estate. Inside the master wing on the top floor, Damon Blackwell stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, a cup of black coffee cooling in his hand.
His phone buzzed on the mahogany side table.
He answered on the second ring. “Report.”
“Done, Mr. Blackwell,” Matteo’s voice came through crisp and clear. “Preston Caldwell and his two friends boarded a private freight charter out of Hanscom Field at 4:30 AM. Bound for a remote logging camp in northern Canada owned by one of our subsidiaries. Their phones are in a drawer at the airfield. They won't be returning calls—or civilization—for a very long time.”
“And the Senator?”
“He resigned his Senate seat via a scheduled press release sent to the Associated Press an hour ago, citing ‘health reasons and family emergency.’ His DC office is already being packed up by his junior aides. He’s currently driving south toward his Florida estate. He won't be stopping.”
“Good,” Damon said smoothly. “And the girl?”
“Dr. Hayes confirms Mrs. Bennett was successfully transferred to the private suite on the seventh floor at St. Vincent’s at 6:00 AM. Kate Bennett is currently asleep in the adjoining family room. One of our detail units is stationed outside her door. Total discretion maintained.”
“Keep them there,” Damon ordered, taking a slow sip of his coffee. “Let her rest. She hasn't slept a full night in months.”
“Understood, sir. One more thing... Aaron checked the staff quarters. Kate’s belongings are still in her locker downstairs. Should we have someone pack them, or—?”
“No,” Damon interrupted, his eyes narrowing slightly as he watched a flock of birds scatter across the misty morning sky. “She’s not leaving.”
“Sir?”
“Tell HR to promote her. Effective immediately. She is no longer a floor attendant.”
“What position would you like to assign her, Mr. Blackwell?”
Damon stared out at the sprawling estate, a faint, rare ghost of a smile touching the corner of his mouth. “Personal archivist. She has an eye for details everyone else misses. And in this house, details are everything.”
“Consider it done,” Matteo replied before the line went dead.

Damon lowered the phone, turning back toward the quiet, cavernous room. For years, his life had been a calculated exercise in power, acquisition, and absolute control. He had built a fortress of wealth to ensure that no one could ever touch him, hurt him, or dictate his terms again. But standing there in the stillness of dawn, looking at the empty hallway, he realized something unexpected: for the first time in a decade, someone had entered his world not out of fear or greed, but out of pure, unyielding survival.
And he intended to make sure she never had to run again.
