Chapter 2 - The Temporary Resident Takeover

For eleven months, Harrison and Sloan had been living in the house my late husband, Daniel, and I had spent decades building a life in. They had moved in “temporarily” after Harrison lost his job, and at first, I was deeply grateful to have my son close following Daniel’s death.

Yet, temporary slowly metastasized into something permanent and suffocating. Sloan systematically took over closets, cabinets, the hall bathroom, the guest room, and eventually, the emotional center of the house. Whenever I gently objected, Harrison asked me not to start an argument. If I asked Sloan not to leave heavy packages piled in the entryway, I was accused of “making a big deal out of nothing”. If I inquired about their timeline for moving out, Harrison claimed he was under enough pressure already.

Every single concern I raised was twisted into proof that I was difficult, demanding, and unreasonable. Little by little, I stopped raising concerns altogether.

That was how I ended up walking on eggshells inside my own home. I bought groceries for three adults, cleaned up their messes, gave them space, gave them money, and chanted the mantra that I was simply helping my son through a difficult season. What I refused to admit to myself was that I had become terrified of Sloan’s volatile anger, and even more terrified that Harrison would choose her side if I pushed too hard. Having lost Daniel, I could not bear the terrifying prospect of losing my son as well.
