Chapter 15 - The Price of Bringing Him Home

Nolan stared at his father's note for a long time.

Delaney knew the expression.

It wasn't shock anymore.

It was exhaustion.

There are only so many times a person can discover that someone they love has lied before the heart stops reacting with surprise.

"He's protecting us," Nolan said bitterly.

Delaney touched his arm.

"Probably."

"I hate that word."

"So do I."

Sloan ordered a search for Thomas.

Emmett remained quiet.

He understood better than anyone what it meant to love family members who kept choosing terrible methods for supposedly good reasons.

Celeste woke fully the next morning.

Emmett went to the hospital.

Delaney and Nolan came too.

Celeste looked fragile without perfect clothes and controlled posture.

She stared at Nolan.

"Your father took the ledger."

"Yes."

"I'm sorry."

"Did you know he'd do that?"

"No."

"Did you give him access?"

"Years ago."

Nolan sat.

"Vale says Thomas built the modern Winter Account."

Celeste's eyes widened.

"What?"

"You didn't know?"

"No."

Her reaction seemed genuine.

Emmett watched.

"Then who did?"

Celeste shook her head.

"I used the system. Marco ran operations. Vale supplied intelligence. Victor controlled old contacts."

"But someone structured it."

"Yes."

"Who?"

"I thought Marco."

Nolan looked at Delaney.

Another hidden architect.

Then Sloan entered.

"We found Thomas's vehicle."

"Where?"

"Abandoned outside Worcester."

"Ledger?"

"No."

"Thomas?"

"No."

Security footage showed him boarding a bus.

Then disappearing.

An hour later, Nolan received an email.

From Thomas.

One video.

Thomas sat in a plain room.

"Son, if you're watching this, I'm sorry."

Nolan closed his eyes.

"After Eleanor died, I realized evidence alone wasn't enough. Corruption ate evidence. Witnesses vanished. Cases collapsed."

Delaney felt dread.

"So I rebuilt her system."

Emmett went still.

Thomas continued.

"I told myself I was protecting witnesses. Sometimes I was. Other times I used information to force corrupt men to turn on worse men."

Nolan whispered, "No."

"I became very good at it."

Celeste looked horrified.

Thomas had built the infrastructure she later inherited.

Winter Account's modern form.

He had been the invisible architect.

"Vale discovered it. Victor exploited it. Celeste inherited pieces. Marco weaponized others."

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

"But the structure was mine."

Nolan's eyes filled.

"I am taking the original ledger somewhere none of them can use it."

Sloan muttered, "Idiot."

Thomas continued.

"I know you believe evidence should go to authorities. You are better than me. That's why I stayed away."

Nolan shook his head.

"You coward."

"I love you."

The video ended.

Attached was one location.

A marina.

Emmett looked up.

"He's inviting Nolan."

Nolan stood.

"I'm going."

Delaney grabbed his coat.

"So am I."

The marina was nearly empty.

Thomas stood at the end of a dock.

Ledger in hand.

No weapons visible.

Nolan approached alone initially.

Delaney waited thirty feet away.

"Why?" Nolan asked.

Thomas looked at the water.

"Because Sloan can't protect every name inside this book."

"Some names deserve prosecution."

"Some are witnesses."

"Then redact them."

"And trust which office?"

"We build a case."

Thomas laughed sadly.

"You still believe institutions can be repaired."

"Yes."

"I used to."

"Then believe me."

Thomas looked at his son.

"I watched your mother die thinking I was dead."

Nolan's face hardened.

"You don't get to use Mom."

"I know."

"You stole twenty years."

"I know."

"You watched me from a distance and called it love."

Thomas cried.

"I know."

Nolan stepped closer.

"Then stop deciding for me."

Thomas stared.

"Give me the ledger."

"Victor's people—"

"Victor is arrested."

"Vale isn't."

"We'll find him."

"Celeste—"

"Is cooperating."

"Marco—"

"Custody."

Thomas looked toward Emmett.

"And him?"

Nolan followed his gaze.

"Emmett will answer for what he did too."

Emmett did not flinch.

Thomas seemed surprised.

"You'd allow that?"

Emmett said, "It isn't mine to allow."

That mattered.

Thomas looked at the ledger.

Then at Nolan.

Slowly he held it out.

Nolan took it.

No violence.

No dramatic betrayal.

Just a father finally releasing control.

Thomas began to cry.

"I'm sorry."

Nolan held the ledger against his chest.

"I don't forgive you."

Thomas nodded.

"I understand."

"Maybe someday."

Thomas looked up.

Hope appeared.

"Maybe."

Then a gunshot cracked.

Thomas fell.

Delaney screamed.

Emmett pulled Nolan down.

Federal agents rushed.

Another shot struck wood.

Sloan identified the shooter on a warehouse roof.

Agents moved.

Thomas lay bleeding.

Nolan crawled toward him.

"Dad."

Thomas coughed.

"I'm okay."

"You are absolutely not okay."

An ambulance arrived.

The shooter was captured ten minutes later.

Not Vale.

A hired man.

But his phone contained messages.

Vale had ordered it.

Thomas survived surgery.

Barely.

The ledger entered federal custody.

Copies were distributed through multiple independent channels so no single corrupt official could erase them.

Sloan smiled grimly.

"Your mother would've liked redundancy."

Emmett looked at Eleanor's bracelet.

"Yes."

That evening, Delaney and Nolan returned to the mansion temporarily.

Lily ran toward them.

Nolan knelt carefully.

"So you're the dancer."

Lily nodded.

"Delaney says you're famous."

"She lies."

"She said you're bad at singing."

"That part is true."

Lily took his hand.

"Come dance anyway."

Nolan looked at Delaney.

She smiled.

The three of them entered the library.

Gus sat on the desk.

For the first time since Delaney started working there, the money was gone.

The bracelet was gone.

No tests.

No traps.

Just a room.

Delaney lifted the feather duster.

"Ladies and gentlemen—"

Nolan groaned.

"No."

Lily laughed.

Emmett stood in the doorway.

Arms folded.

The same pose as the first morning.

But this time he was smiling.

Then Sloan called him.

The smile faded.

He listened.

"Understood."

After hanging up, he looked at Delaney.

"What?"

"Vale has been found."

"Where?"

"Boston."

"Arrested?"

"No."

Emmett's expression hardened.

"He wants to surrender."

Nolan frowned.

"Why?"

Emmett looked toward the snow outside.

"Because he says someone is trying to kill him."

Delaney stared.

"Who?"

Emmett answered with two words.

"Celeste Ror."

May you like

And upstairs, Celeste's hospital room was suddenly empty.
