Chapter 5 - The Dead Man Who Built the Lie

Vittorio Moretti looked nothing like a ghost.

Ghosts were supposed to be pale, drifting things.

Vittorio stood beneath the broken factory lights wearing a charcoal coat, leather gloves, and the expression of a man who had been expecting this reunion for years.

Carmine seemed to become eight years old in front of me.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

His shoulders stiffened.

His face emptied.

“Father.”

Vittorio smiled.

“You look disappointed.”

“I buried you.”

“You buried a coffin.”

Rocco laughed.

Daniel sat tied to a steel chair.

Mrs. Bell beside him.

I moved toward them.

Rocco raised his weapon.

Carmine caught my arm.

“Stay.”

Vittorio studied me.

“Margaret’s daughter.”

My skin crawled.

“You knew my mother.”

“Better than you did, apparently.”

Carmine stepped forward.

“Do not speak to her.”

Vittorio’s eyebrows lifted.

“Protective.”

“Let them go.”

“Which one?”

“All of them.”

“Even Matteo?”

Daniel looked at Carmine.

His face was pale.

“My name is Daniel.”

Vittorio smiled.

“That woman taught you well.”

“My mother taught me my name.”

“She was not your mother.”

I saw Daniel’s entire body tighten.

I spoke before thinking.

“She raised him. That makes her his mother.”

Vittorio turned toward me.

For one moment I understood exactly why people had feared him.

Then Mrs. Bell said, “Margaret was twice the parent you ever were.”

Rocco struck her.

Carmine moved.

Vittorio lifted one hand.

Rocco stopped.

“Enough.”

Carmine’s voice was almost inhuman.

“If he touches her again, I will kill him before you finish your next sentence.”

Vittorio smiled.

“There’s my son.”

“No.”

Carmine looked directly at him.

“Your son died the day I learned what you were.”

The smile disappeared.

Years of secrets spilled out inside that abandoned mill.

Vittorio had built the hidden accounts.

Margaret discovered he was laundering money through charities and hospitals.

Sofia Moretti, Carmine’s mother, wanted out.

She planned to take both boys.

Vittorio discovered the plan.

He threatened to keep the children.

Sofia begged Margaret for help.

So Margaret took baby Matteo.

Changed his identity.

Raised him as Daniel Vale.

Vittorio believed Matteo had died during the escape because Margaret staged a car fire.

Sofia remained trapped.

She died two years later.

Officially an accident.

Carmine stared at his father.

“You killed her.”

Vittorio said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Carmine’s eyes closed.

When they reopened, there was grief inside them.

Not shock.

Perhaps he had suspected for years.

Margaret had kept the financial records as insurance.

Eighteen million dollars was not hers.

It belonged to a hidden restitution fund created from money Vittorio had stolen from legitimate businesses.

She intended to return it.

But she became sick before she could finish.

Rocco discovered the records.

He realized whoever controlled Daniel could access the final account.

That was why he threatened me.

That was why Vittorio resurfaced.

Everyone wanted the same thing.

The key.

Except Carmine.

He looked only at Daniel.

“Let my brother go.”

Vittorio smiled.

“Give me the credential.”

I touched my apron.

The card.

Still there.

“Elena,” Carmine warned.

I stepped forward.

“You want this?”

Vittorio’s gaze fixed on it.

“Yes.”

“Let them go.”

“Elena.”

I ignored Carmine.

Vittorio nodded at Rocco.

Rocco untied Mrs. Bell.

Then Daniel.

They moved toward us.

I held up the card.

Vittorio extended his hand.

I dropped it.

Then crushed it under my heel.

Vittorio’s face changed.

Carmine stared.

I smiled despite my split lip.

“My mother raised me too.”

Chaos followed.

Rocco lunged.

Security entered through the rear doors.

Mrs. Bell pulled Daniel down.

Carmine tackled Rocco.

I ran.

Not away.

Toward the office where Margaret’s letter said a secondary key was hidden.

Because my mother had known men like Vittorio.

She had known they would always believe power lived in one object.

The real access code was never the card.

It was a phrase.

A song lyric from the tune she sang while cooking.

The archive opened remotely.

Every financial record automatically transmitted to federal investigators.

Vittorio heard the alarms.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Carmine stood.

Bleeding from his eyebrow.

Rocco on the floor.

Sirens approached.

Vittorio stared at his son.

“You would destroy everything your family built?”

Carmine looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

Then at Mrs. Bell.

“No.”

He answered quietly.

“I’m saving what’s left of it.”

Vittorio was arrested.

Rocco too.

But the nightmare was not finished.

Because as federal agents searched Vittorio’s coat, they found a sealed envelope addressed to me.

Inside was my mother’s handwriting.

One sentence.

May you like

Elena, if Vittorio is alive when you read this, Carmine still does not know the final truth about his father.
