Chapter 5 - The Siege of the Safe House

At three o'clock in the morning, the winter storm hit its peak.

Blinding white snow whipped across the pine trees surrounding the Whitmore estate, cutting off visibility beyond ten yards. The wind howled against the reinforced glass windows like a dying beast.

Inside the basement tactical room, Grant stood before a wall of glowing security monitors.

“Perimeter sensors 4 and 7 are down,” Vance Sterling, Grant’s chief tactical advisor, reported. “The storm broke the optical feeds. We’re relying entirely on thermal motion detectors.”

“He’s coming tonight,” Grant said, checking the magazine of his customized assault rifle. “Vance knows I have the birth certificate. He knows I won't wait until Sunday.”

Suddenly, the lights flickered and died.

The emergency generators kicked in instantly, bathing the concrete walls in a dark crimson glow.

An alarm blared through the internal speakers.

“Breach at the east tunnel!” Dominic’s voice cracked over the radio. “They blew the old drainage access! Multiple targets coming up through the lower wine cellar!”

“Secure the master suite!” Grant ordered, sprinting toward the heavy iron stairs.

Upstairs, in the darkened master sitting room, Claire was holding Lily tightly against her chest. The little girl was crying softly, frightened by the loud alarms and flashing red lights.

Atlas stood directly in front of them, his hackles raised, his tail stiff, emitting a continuous, ferocious vibration from his chest.

The heavy oak doors of the master suite suddenly buckled inward with a thunderous bang.

BOOM.

A heavy breaching charge blew the hinges off the frame. Dust and wood splinters filled the air.

Through the smoke stepped four men clad in dark tactical gear, night-vision goggles glowing green over their eyes. The lead mercenary raised a suppressed submachine gun, sweeping the room.

“Secure the girl! Kill the woman!” he barked.

Before he could pull the trigger, Atlas burst through the smoke.

The massive dog didn't hit the lead man—he hit the gun, tearing the weapon out of the mercenary’s hands with crushing bite force. The man screamed as Atlas dragged him to the floor.

The second mercenary aimed at Atlas’s head.

“NO!” Lily shrieked.

RAT-TAT-TAT!

A burst of gunfire echoed through the room, but the bullets didn't hit the dog. They struck the second mercenary squarely in the chest.

Grant Whitmore stepped through the shattered doorway, his rifle smoking. His eyes were cold, lethal, and merciless.

In less than three seconds, Grant cleared the room. The four mercenaries lay motionless on the Persian rug.

Grant rushed over to Claire and Lily, checking them quickly. “Are you hit?”

“We’re okay... we’re okay!” Claire sobbed, clinging to his coat.

Grant looked down at Atlas. The dog had a shallow bloody scrape across his shoulder from a flying wood splinter, but he was standing firm, nudging Lily with his nose to make sure she was safe.

“Vance’s main team is in the courtyard,” Grant said, pulling a secondary sidearm from his chest rig and pressing it into Claire’s trembling hands. “Listen to me, Claire. Take Lily and go into the hidden panic room behind the fireplace. Lock it from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me or Dominic.”

“Grant... please be careful,” Claire whispered, looking into his eyes with a fear that was no longer just for her daughter, but for him.

Grant touched her cheek gently, a brief moment of warmth amidst the violence. “I spent four years regretting that I couldn't save my brother. I will not fail his family.”

He clicked the hidden button behind the mantelpiece. The stone wall slid open quietly.

Claire slipped inside with Lily and Atlas. The stone door closed, leaving Grant alone in the crimson-lit suite.

Grant turned around, racking the slide of his rifle, and walked out into the storm to finish the war.
