Chapter 7 - Tending to the Monster
Tessa ran down the grand staircase as soon as she heard the commotion.
She saw Damian standing in the foyer, swaying slightly on his feet.
His expensive suit was ruined.
A deep cut stretched across his left cheek.
Damian, she gasped, rushing toward him.
He looked at her and managed a weak, exhausted smile.
It is done, he rasped.
He suddenly stumbled forward, his strength finally giving out.
Tessa caught him by the shoulders, struggling beneath his heavy weight.
Guards rushed forward to help, but Damian waved them away aggressively.
Only her, he growled.
Tessa wrapped her arm around his waist and helped him up the stairs.
She guided him past her room and directly into his massive master suite.
She helped him sit down on the edge of the large black leather bed.
Tessa rushed into his private bathroom and grabbed a first aid kit.
She returned to find him struggling to pull off his ruined jacket.
She gently batted his hands away and helped him remove his clothes.
His muscular torso was covered in bruises and old scars.
Tessa wet a washcloth with warm water and began to clean his wounds.
She moved with the same careful precision he had shown her in the beginning.
Damian hissed in pain as the antiseptic hit a deep cut on his ribs.
I am sorry, she murmured, blowing softly on the wound.
Damian looked down at her, completely captivated.
You are too good for this world, he whispered.
Tessa looked up, her brown eyes meeting his intense gaze.
No, she replied firmly.
I am exactly where I need to be.
She finished bandaging his ribs and gently cleaned the cut on his cheek.
When she was finally done, she tried to step away.
Damian reached out and grabbed her hand, pulling her back.
He pulled her down onto his lap.
He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling her clean scent.
Tessa wrapped her arms tightly around his broad shoulders.

They stayed like that for hours, finding peace in the middle of chaos.
