Chapter 3 - The Vows of the Underworld

The sun dipped lower behind the Hudson Palisades, casting long, amber shadows across the lawn of Ashford Manor. The wind picked up, rustling the silk banners that still bore the monogram A & C—Adrian and Clara.
Nobody dared mention the initials.
Father Thomas, his hands shaking so badly he could barely hold the prayer book, cleared his throat. He looked from Adrian, sitting tall and rigid in his carbon-fiber wheelchair, to Emily Harper, who stood beside him now with her head held high, her black service uniform looking suddenly like armor.
“Dearly beloved,” the priest began, his voice cracking slightly on the second syllable. “We are gathered here... under unexpected circumstances... to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony.”
“Skip the preamble, Father,” Adrian said quietly, his voice cutting through the quiet garden like a scalpel. “Just get to the rings.”
Marcus Hale stepped forward. He didn't offer a velvet box bearing a two-carat Tiffany diamond. Instead, Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy, platinum band—plain, unadorned, and worn smooth from years of service. It was his own wedding ring, removed from his finger and polished on his lapel before he handed it to his boss.
Adrian took the platinum ring in his palm. He looked up at Emily, his gray eyes piercing and intense.
“Emily Harper,” Adrian said, his voice ringing clearly across the silent grounds. “I cannot offer you a fairytale. I cannot run through a field of flowers with you, or dance with you under the stars. My world is full of enemies, blood, and ledgers that never balance.”
Emily swallowed hard, her eyes shining with unshed tears. “I didn't ask for a fairytale, Adrian. I asked for a fire.”
Adrian slid the heavy platinum band onto her left ring finger. It fit with absolute, terrifying perfection.
“Then burn with me,” he murmured.
There were no rings for Adrian—he didn't need one; his carbon-fiber chair was the badge of his survival.
Father Thomas swallowed hard, closing the prayer book. “By the power vested in me by the State of New York and the Almighty, I now pronounce you husband and wife. What God has joined together, let no man—nor any departing debutante—tear apart.”
“Amen to that,” Marcus muttered from the front row, chambering a round in his pocket with a soft click.
“You may kiss the bride,” the priest squeaked.
Adrian didn't hesitate. He reached up, his strong hands catching the back of Emily’s neck, and pulled her down into a deep, fierce, unhurried kiss that tasted of salt, iron, and a brand-new beginning.
A collective gasp rose from the crowd, followed immediately by the sound of twenty high-powered camera shutters firing at once.

The socialites were recording every second of it, convinced they were documenting the ultimate descent of a ruined criminal king.
They had no idea they were watching the coronation of a queen.
