Chapter 6 - The First Night

The master bedroom in the west wing was bathed in the warm, soft glow of the fireplace.
Outside, the rain still tapped against the heavy glass windows, but inside, the room felt safe, warm, and entirely isolated from the violent world below.
Elena stood near the edge of the large king-sized bed, wearing a soft silk robe, her dark hair falling loosely over her shoulders. She looked at the room she had avoided for three years—a room decorated with dark mahogany, rich leather, and deep grey linens.
Dante stepped out of the bathroom, wearing dark trousers and an unbuttoned black linen shirt. His hands were clean, his dark hair damp from a quick shower.
He stopped near the edge of the rug, looking at her with a quiet, hesitant reverence that made her heart ache.
"You don't have to stay here tonight if you're not ready, Elena," Dante murmured softly, his grey eyes locked onto hers with unconditional devotion. "The east wing is clean. You can—"
Elena didn't let him finish.
She walked across the rug, closing the small gap between them, and pressed her hands flat against his warm, bare chest.
Dante’s breath hitched completely. His body went rigid with shock as her small, soft hands smoothed over his skin, feeling the heavy, powerful beat of his heart beneath her palms.
"I spent three years in the east wing, Dante," Elena whispered, tears of joy welling in her dark eyes as she looked up into his face. "I'm not spending another night away from you."
Dante let out a low, shuddering sound—a sound of raw, overwhelming relief that had been buried deep inside his chest for thirty-six months.
He reached out, his big, calloused hands gently framing her face, his thumbs wiping away her tears before sliding into her thick, soft hair.
"Elena..." Dante choked out, his voice rough with emotion. "I thought I lost you. Every single day... I looked at your closed door and thought I was losing you."
"You never lost me, Dante," Elena wept softly, leaning her forehead against his jaw. "I was always yours. From the moment I argued with you about those three small restaurants at the fundraiser... I was always yours."
Dante raised her face, looking into her dark eyes with an absolute, fierce devotion that took her breath away.
"No more secrets," Dante growled softly against her lips. "No more locked doors. No more distance."
"No more secrets," Elena promised.
Dante leaned down and pressed his lips firmly against hers.
The kiss was warm, deep, and filled with three years of unspoken love, desperate longing, and profound healing. Elena gasped against his mouth, her arms wrapping tightly around his broad neck, pulling his broad chest flush against hers, yielding entirely to his strength.

Dante lifted her effortlessly into his arms, carrying her to the large bed, coming down beside her in the warm glow of the firelight.
As the autumn storm raged over the city of Chicago, high above the wet streets, inside the impenetrable fortress forty-two floors above the ground, the mafia boss and his brave bride lay wrapped in each other's arms, knowing that their long, dark night was finally over—and their real marriage had just begun.
