Chapter 2 - The Secret Grave

The rain returned at midnight, drumming a relentless, dreary rhythm against the bulletproof windows of Alessandro’s armored SUV.
The convoy of four dark vehicles snaked through the muddy back roads of the southern docklands, miles away from the neon glow of the city center. The headlamps cut through the thick fog, illuminating overgrown pine trees and abandoned shipping warehouses rusting in the salty sea air.
In the back seat of the lead vehicle sat Alessandro and Mara.
Mara was no longer wearing the rough maid's apron. She was wrapped in a soft cashmere coat, a warm cup of tea resting untouched in her lap. Next to them sat Victoria, her hands bound tightly in steel handcuffs, her mascara smeared across her pale, terrified face.
Gideon sat in the front passenger seat, a heavy trench coat covering his shoulders, a silver shovel resting between his knees.
"We're entering the old Moretti shipping zone, Boss," Gideon reported, his eyes scanning the pitch-black woods outside. "Thermal sensors show no activity, but Don Vincent’s men patrol these roads every two hours."
"Let them patrol," Alessandro said coldly. He turned his gaze toward Victoria, who was shivering violently against the leather seat. "Where is it, Victoria? We’re five minutes from the river."
"It's... it's behind the ruined chapel," Victoria wept, her voice trembling so badly her teeth clicked together. "Near the iron fence. There’s an unmarked stone covered in moss. Please, Alessandro, I swear I didn't kill her! My father brought me there when I was sixteen! He made me watch so I would learn what happens to people who cross the Moretti family!"
Mara’s hand tightened around her silver pendant. "She’s lying, Alessandro. She didn't just watch. She took my mother’s ring off her finger before they threw the dirt over her."
Victoria snapped her head toward Mara. "I was a child! My father forced me to take it to prove I was loyal to the family!"
"You kept the ring in your jewelry box," Mara replied, her voice cold, steady, and filled with a quiet strength that mirrored her brother’s. "I saw it three weeks ago when I was dusting your dressing table. You wore my mother's ruby like a trophy."
Alessandro didn't say a word. He simply reached out, grabbed Victoria by the back of her neck, and forced her face close to his. "If my mother’s resting place is disturbed, or if you led us into an ambush, I will bury you in the exact same plot before the sun rises."
The convoy pulled to a halt beside a collapsed stone archway. Beyond it lay the overgrown ruins of a 19th-century church, its roof long since caved in, swallowed by ivy and thick brambles.
Gideon stepped out first, raising his tactical flashlight and signaling the six heavily armed guards surrounding the perimeter. "Clear!"
Alessandro stepped out into the pouring rain, holding an umbrella over Mara as he guided her across the slippery, muddy ground. Victoria was dragged behind them by two guards, her expensive silk dress ruined by the mud.
Mara led the way, her instincts guiding her through the darkness as if she were reliving the terrifying night six years ago. She stopped near the rusted iron fence at the rear of the churchyard, where a massive, weeping willow tree hung low over a mound of dark earth.
"Here," Mara whispered, her breath rising in white clouds in the cold air. She pointed to a small, moss-covered slab of granite half-buried in the mud. "This is where they put her."
Gideon immediately stepped forward with three men, thrusting their shovels into the wet earth.
The sound of metal biting into dirt echoed through the quiet forest, accompanied only by the patter of rain against the leaves. Alessandro stood rigid, holding Mara close to his side. His jaw was clenched so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin. For eighteen years, he had believed his mother had died in a fire, her body consumed by flames. To realize she had been alive, suffering in exile, hiding from the very monsters he had aligned himself with, burned his soul like liquid iron.
Forty minutes of grueling digging passed in silence.
CLANG.
The tip of Gideon’s shovel struck something solid and metallic.
Gideon stopped. He knelt down in the deep trench, wiping away the dark mud with his gloved hands. "Boss. It’s an iron box. High-grade security seal."
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed. "An iron box? Not a casket?"
"It’s a reinforced supply chest from the old Romano armory," Gideon said, his voice rising in surprise. He cleared away more dirt, revealing a heavy mechanical lock on the front of the rusted box. "This wasn't just a grave, Boss. Someone sealed this chest with a bio-metric or key lock."
Mara stepped forward to the edge of the pit, her eyes wide. "My mother... before they dragged her away, she told me she had hidden the truth inside the dark. She said, 'The pendant opens the box, Mara. Give it only to your brother.'"
Alessandro looked down at the tiny silver pendant hanging from Mara’s neck. He reached out, his thumb brushing the delicate engraving on the back—a crest featuring a lion wrapped in silver chains.
"Give it to me," Alessandro said softly.
Mara unclasped the thin chain and placed the pendant in Alessandro’s palm.
Alessandro jumped down into the muddy pit beside Gideon. He knelt before the rusted iron chest, wiping the wet clay from the keyhole. The keyhole wasn't standard; it was a narrow, star-shaped slot that matched the exact dimensions of the lion crest on the back of the pendant.
He inserted the silver crest into the slot and turned it clockwise.
CLICK-CLACK.
Heavy iron bolts retracted inside the chest with a loud, mechanical thud.
Alessandro slowly lifted the heavy lid.
Inside lay the skeletal remains of Isabella Romano, her hands folded peacefully over her chest. But resting directly on her ribcage was a thick, leather-bound ledger wrapped in thick oilskin, along with a small black digital recording drive.
"She didn't just hide from them," Alessandro breathed, his eyes wide with dark realization. "She spent twelve years gathering evidence on the entire syndicate."

Before he could lift the ledger, a red laser dot appeared on the back of Gideon’s jacket.
"BOSS! DOWN!" Gideon screamed, tackling Alessandro to the muddy floor of the trench just as a high-powered sniper rifle cracked through the night sky!
