Chapter 5 - The Reckoning in the Dark

The bodyguard froze, his hand slipping instantly from Rosa’s throat. He looked from the dark muzzle of Alessandro’s SIG Sauer up to the cold, dead-eyed expression of the man who ruled New York’s underworld. The man’s knees began to tremble. Without a word, he let go of Rosa and raised his hands slowly into the air, taking two steps back against the damp concrete wall.

Rosa stumbled forward, coughing and gasping for air, her dark hair tangled around her face. The moment she regained her balance, her eyes scanned the dimly lit stairwell until they landed on Alessandro holding her daughter.

A sharp, ragged sob broke from her chest.

"Lily," Rosa whispered, her hands flying into motion, signing frantically. Are you safe? Did they hurt you?

Lily reached out from Alessandro’s arms, signing back with fierce, tearful speed. Daddy saved us. The bad man is sleeping.

Alessandro lowered his left arm, using it to steady Rosa by the shoulder, guiding her safely behind him out of the line of fire. He kept his pistol trained squarely on the bodyguard, then shifted his gaze upward to where Vivian stood on the landing halfway down the stairs, frozen in place like a trapped animal.

The red silk gown that had looked so magnificent under the ballroom chandeliers now looked stained and out of place in the dark, damp concrete stairwell. Her dark hair was disheveled, and the three expensive diamonds at her throat rose and fell with her rapid, shallow breathing.

"Alessandro," Vivian breathed, her voice turning honey-sweet, trying to salvage a game that was already lost. "Put the gun down. Let me explain. It was all Luca's idea—he forced me into this, he said if I didn't help him take over the shipping routes, he would—"

"Stop talking, Vivian," Alessandro interrupted. His voice was dangerously quiet. "You sound like a bad actress in a play everyone has already walked out of."

"You can't kill me," Vivian snapped, her panic finally overriding her charm as her voice sharpened into a bitter hiss. "Our families signed the treaties. If you touch me, northern New Jersey will tear your empire apart brick by brick. There will be a war in every borough from Manhattan to Montauk."

"Let them try," Alessandro said. "The Moretti empire wasn't built on treaties, Vivian. It was built on blood, loyalty, and remembering who your friends are. You tried to poison the man who gave you a seat at his table. And you threatened a child who had more honor in her little finger than your entire bloodline."

He glanced back at Rosa, who stood protectively behind him, her hands still trembling as she held Lily close.

"Mrs. Delgado," Alessandro said, his tone softening just a fraction. "Is there anything in this house you want to take before we leave?"

May you like

Rosa looked around the damp concrete stairs, then down at her daughter, and finally up at the man who had terrified her for two years. Slowly, a small, tired, but genuine smile touched the corners of her mouth.

She shook her head. "No, Mr. Moretti. I only clean what's dirty. And this house is finally clean."
