Chapter 9 - The Last Enemy Came For Maya On Her Wedding Day

Six months later, Maya and Dominic were supposed to get married.
The ceremony was small.
Family.
Friends.
Sophie.
Elena.
A few people Dominic trusted.
Maya wore a simple ivory dress.
She had designed it herself.
At noon, Elena helped button the back.
Her hands trembled.
“You look like my little girl.”
Maya smiled.
“I am your little girl.”
Elena cried.
“I missed so much.”
“You can't get it back.”
“I know.”
“But you can be here now.”
Elena nodded.
The ceremony began at sunset.
Dominic waited beneath an arch covered with white flowers.
He looked nervous.
Maya had never seen him nervous before.
When she reached him, he whispered,
“You're beautiful.”
She smiled.
“So are you.”
“That is objectively false.”
She laughed.
The vows began.
Then the church doors slammed open.
A man entered.
Everyone froze.
Dominic's security team moved.
The man raised his hands.
“I'm not here to hurt anyone.”
Dominic recognized him.
A federal agent.
He carried an envelope.
“This concerns Maya.”
Maya's heart stopped.
“What?”
The agent handed Dominic the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Maya's mother.
And another man.
A man Maya did not recognize.
On the back:
Your father is alive.
Maya nearly collapsed.
“No.”
Dominic caught her.
The agent continued.
“We've been tracking him for months.”
“Who is he?”
“Elena's husband.”
Maya stared at her mother.
Elena began crying.
“No.”
“You never told me.”
“I thought he was dead.”
“Who is he?”
Elena whispered the name.
“Adrian Vale.”
Dominic looked shocked.
Everyone in the room knew that name.
A former intelligence operative.
A man believed to have died overseas.
A man connected to Bellini's international network.
Maya felt the world tilt.
“Is he my father?”
Elena nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why is he alive?”
“He was working undercover.”
“For whom?”
“For himself.”
The agent opened another file.
“Mr. Vale has been trying to retrieve one final piece of evidence.”
“What evidence?”
“The original ledger.”
Maya looked at Dominic.
“We destroyed it.”
“No,” the agent said.
“You translated it.”
Maya understood.
The ledger's true value was not the pages.
It was the code.
And Maya was the only person who could still read it.
Before anyone could speak, the lights went out.
A scream.
Gunfire.
Maya fell.
Dominic covered her.
When the lights returned, Elena was gone.
A note lay where she had been.
BRING THE SEAMSTRESS.
Maya's face hardened.
“They took my mother.”
Dominic looked at her.
“We get her back.”
The trail led to a train station.
Then an old textile mill.
Then an abandoned factory outside the city.
Maya recognized the place.
She had been there as a child.
Her father had taught her to sew there.
Adrian Vale stood waiting.
Elena sat beside him.
Maya entered.
“Let her go.”
Adrian smiled.
“You have your mother's courage.”
“You're my father.”
“Yes.”
“I hate you.”
“I know.”
“You abandoned us.”
“I was protecting you.”
“Everyone says that.”
He looked ashamed.
“I failed.”
Dominic stepped forward.
Adrian pointed a gun.
“Don't.”
Maya stopped him.
“You wanted the code.”
“Yes.”
“Then listen.”
She recited the coded message.
Adrian's eyes widened.
“What does it say?”
Maya smiled.
“It says you're lying.”
He froze.
She continued.
“The final evidence was never stored in the ledger.”
“Where?”
“In the stitching.”
Adrian stared.
Maya pulled a tiny piece of embroidered fabric from her pocket.
“I've spent my whole life looking at seams.”
She held it up.
“You should have remembered that.”
Federal agents surrounded the building.
Adrian slowly lowered his gun.
He looked at Maya.
“You really are your mother's daughter.”
Maya shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward Dominic.
“I am myself.”
Adrian surrendered.
Elena was freed.
The wedding resumed two days later.
No guns.
No kidnappers.
No secrets.
Just music.
Flowers.
Family.
May you like
And Dominic waiting for Maya under the arch.
This time, when she walked toward him, no one interrupted.
