Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Lie

Gabriel opened the door only after security checked the hallway.

Vanessa stood alone.

Her mascara had begun to run.

“What are you doing here?” Gabriel asked.

“I need to tell you something.”

Elena remained behind him.

Vanessa saw the old letter in her hand.

Her face fell.

“You found it.”

Gabriel’s eyes sharpened.

“You knew about this?”

“Not that exact letter.”

“Come inside.”

Vanessa entered.

For the first time since Elena had known her, she looked less like a model stepping onto a red carpet and more like an exhausted young woman trapped inside a decision she regretted.

“I lied,” Vanessa said.

Gabriel said nothing.

“Your father did arrange our first meeting.”

“I know.”

“But that wasn’t all.”

Elena folded her arms.

“Go on.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“Victor hired me.”

The words landed quietly.

Gabriel’s expression did not change.

“For what?”

“To get close to you.”

“How much?”

“Gabriel—”

“How much?”

“Two hundred thousand dollars initially.”

Elena looked away.

Gabriel stared at Vanessa.

“And afterward?”

“He helped my career. Introductions. Campaigns. Magazine contacts.”

“Were we ever real?”

Vanessa began crying.

“For me, yes.”

“That wasn’t the arrangement.”

“No.”

Gabriel turned toward the window.

Vanessa continued.

“Victor said Elena might come back someday. He wanted someone beside you before that happened.”

Elena felt sick.

“He knew I might come back?”

“He knew you kept writing.”

Gabriel turned.

Vanessa nodded.

“I saw some of the letters.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of losing the money?”

“Of losing you.”

Gabriel laughed bitterly.

“You never had me honestly.”

Vanessa flinched.

Elena felt no satisfaction.

This was bigger than jealousy.

Everyone in the room had been manipulated by the same man.

“Mercer?” Gabriel asked.

Vanessa nodded.

“He handled payments.”

“Why is he threatening Elena now?”

“I don’t know.”

“Try again.”

Vanessa opened her clutch.

She removed a small USB drive.

“Because Victor’s scared.”

Gabriel took it.

“Of what?”

“Something Mercer kept.”

They connected the drive to Elena’s laptop.

Folders appeared.

Financial records.

Emails.

Scanned letters.

Photographs.

And audio files.

Gabriel opened the first recording.

Victor’s voice filled the room.

“If Elena contacts him, intercept it.”

Mercer replied, “And the child?”

“Keep them separated.”

Another recording.

“What if Gabriel learns the boy exists?”

“He won’t.”

Another.

“There’s a second pregnancy.”

A pause.

Victor cursed.

Then:

“Handle it the same way.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Gabriel stood completely still.

The final audio file was dated five years earlier.

Mercer said, “Three children make this harder.”

Victor answered:

“Then make sure Gabriel believes she chose to disappear.”

The recording ended.

Gabriel shut the laptop.

No one spoke.

Finally Elena asked Vanessa, “Why give us this now?”

Vanessa wiped her cheek.

“Because Mercer called me tonight.”

Gabriel looked up.

“What did he want?”

“The drive.”

“How did he know you had it?”

“I stole it from Victor’s office six months ago.”

“Why?”

Vanessa looked at Gabriel.

“Insurance.”

That answer was painfully honest.

Gabriel nodded once.

“Where is Mercer now?”

“I don’t know.”

A security officer entered.

“We do.”

Everyone turned.

“He was caught on a traffic camera six blocks from the gala hotel.”

Gabriel’s face changed.

“The boys.”

Elena was already moving.

They raced downstairs.

The drive back felt endless.

Gabriel called Marcus.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Elena’s hands began shaking.

“Call the hotel.”

Gabriel did.

Security answered.

The second-floor reception room was empty.

Gabriel stopped breathing.

“What do you mean empty?”

“Mr. Vale moved the children.”

“Where?”

“We don’t know.”

Elena grabbed the phone.

“Where are my sons?”

The guard stammered.

“Mrs. Cross, Mr. Vale received an evacuation alert. He took them through the service elevator.”

Gabriel looked at Elena.

Marcus had worked for him eleven years.

He had saved Gabriel’s life twice.

Gabriel trusted him more than almost anyone alive.

But trust had become a dangerous word tonight.

They reached the hotel.

Gabriel ran through the lobby.

Elena followed.

Security footage showed Marcus entering the service elevator with Samuel, Noah and Leo.

Another man stood inside.

Adrian Mercer.

Elena’s knees nearly failed.

Gabriel caught her.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“No, no, no.”

Gabriel held her shoulders.

“I’m getting them back.”

“How?”

“I’m getting them back.”

The elevator descended to the underground garage.

Camera footage showed Mercer’s vehicle leaving twelve minutes earlier.

Marcus’s phone was off.

Gabriel ordered every Cross security contact to search.

Police were notified despite Victor’s objections.

Gabriel no longer cared what investigations might follow.

His sons mattered more.

Forty minutes later, Marcus’s phone came online.

One text reached Gabriel.

DON’T TRUST VICTOR. I HAVE THE BOYS SAFE.

Then coordinates.

A warehouse near the Brooklyn waterfront.

Gabriel and Elena arrived with police minutes later.

Marcus stood outside.

Samuel ran toward Elena.

“Mom!”

She collapsed to her knees and gathered all three boys against her.

Gabriel closed his eyes.

They were safe.

He turned toward Marcus.

“What happened?”

“Mercer entered the elevator dressed as hotel security. I recognized him. I played along because he had a gun under his jacket.”

“Where is he?”

“Inside.”

Police entered.

Mercer did not resist.

As officers led him out, he looked directly at Gabriel.

“You still don’t understand.”

Gabriel approached.

“Understand what?”

Mercer smiled.

“Your father wasn’t trying to keep the children away from you.”

“What was he doing?”

“Keeping you away from them.”

Gabriel stared.

Mercer leaned closer before police pulled him back.

“Ask Victor who ordered the test.”

“What test?”

Mercer laughed.

May you like

Then he said something that made Elena’s blood run cold.

“Ask him why he needed DNA results before Samuel was even born.”
