Chapter 4 - The Halston Grand

The Halston Grand Hotel was an architectural monument to old-money opulence, featuring vaulted marble ceilings, gold-leaf moldings, and crystal chandeliers that cast a blinding, brilliant light over the grand ballroom.

By eight o’clock, the room was packed with the most powerful, ruthless men in the Tri-State area.

There were syndicate bosses from Boston, drug distributors from Baltimore, real estate moguls tied to the Italian mob, and corrupt union leaders who controlled the shipping lanes of the Atlantic seaboard. Cigar smoke hung thick in the air, mixed with the expensive scents of aged scotch, heavy cologne, and old leather.

Laughter echoed off the marble pillars. Deals worth tens of millions of dollars were being whispered across linen-covered tables.

And not a single woman was in sight.

When the heavy mahogany doors of Ballroom B swung open, all conversation abruptly died.

The room went dead silent.

Roman Mercer walked in first, his tall, imposing frame radiating an aura of lethal authority, dressed impeccably in his dark tuxedo. But it wasn’t Roman who made every head in the room snap around.

It was the woman walking beside him.

Claire Bennett carried herself with an absolute, unshakeable poise. Her midnight-blue gown swept the marble floor as she stepped into the ballroom, her chin held high, her expression a cool, impenetrable mask of polite indifference. She didn’t look like a secretary walking into a den of wolves; she looked like a queen inspecting her subjects.

Whispers rippled through the crowd immediately.

“Who the hell is that?”

“Is that Roman’s new fiancée?”

“I didn't think Mercer even looked at women like that...”

At a corner table reserved for the Philadelphia delegation, Vincent Hale froze halfway through lighting a thick Cuban cigar. Hale was a massive man with a broken nose, thick silver hair, and eyes like chips of granite. He stared at Claire as if she were a ghost.

Evan Mercer, who was already seated at the head table, choked on his martini, turning bright red as he realized the monster he had helped unleash.

Roman offered his arm, and Claire placed her gloved hand lightly against his sleeve. The warmth of her touch sent a strange, unfamiliar jolt through Roman’s system.

“Smile, Mr. Mercer,” Claire murmured softly, her lips barely moving as they walked toward the VIP table. “You look like you’re leading a condemned man to the gallows.”

“I’m wondering which one of these idiots is going to stare at you long enough to earn a bullet,” Roman muttered back, his jaw tight.

Claire let out a low, musical laugh that made Roman’s chest tighten. “Relax. I brought my presentation notes.”

They reached the head table, where several powerful bosses were already standing.

“Roman,” boomed Victor Moretti, the aging godfather of the New York syndicate, stepping forward with a wide, predatory grin. “You old bastard. You didn't tell us you were bringing company. And what company!”

Moretti’s eyes roved appreciatively over Claire, a greasy charm dripping from his smile. He reached out to take her hand, intending to press a lingering kiss against her knuckles—a classic power play meant to assert dominance.

Before Moretti’s fingers could even brush her glove, Claire executed a smooth, deliberate step to the side, extending her hand in a strictly professional, rigid business shake instead.

“Mr. Moretti,” Claire said, her voice clear, crisp, and carrying across the silent tables. “I’m Claire Bennett, Mr. Mercer’s chief administrative officer. I trust your offshore accounts in the Caymans finally cleared the federal audit from last month? It would be a shame if the IRS seized your shipping terminals again.”

Moretti’s hand froze in mid-air.

The color drained entirely from the older mob boss’s ruddy face. His eyes bulged as he stared at her, the greasy smile vanishing instantly. The Caymans audit was a secret known to perhaps three people on earth.

“What did you say?” Moretti rasped, his voice tightening.

“I said,” Claire repeated sweetly, shaking his paralyzed hand with brisk efficiency before letting go, “it’s a pleasure to finally meet you. Mr. Mercer has told me so much about your... unique accounting methods.”

Around the table, several men abruptly choked back their drinks.

Roman didn't say a word. He pulled out Claire’s chair, seated her with formal precision, and took his own seat directly beside her, resting his elbows on the table and watching the most dangerous men in America sweat through their custom suits.
