Chapter 3 - The Summons in the Dark

The knock on the heavy oak door of Room 104 was soft, but to Elena Carter, it sounded like a gun firing in the quiet hallway.

Elena snapped awake instantly. Years of sleeping with one eye open had conditioned her body to react to the slightest noise. She sat up in the twin bed, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Beside her, Mia was fast asleep, clutching Mabel against her chest, her mouth slightly open.

The knock came again. Two clean, deliberate raps.

Elena slid out from under the covers, pulled a worn wool robe over her nightgown, and stepped quietly across the carpet. She peeked through the peephole.

Standing in the dimly lit corridor was Richard Hale, flanked by two towering men in charcoal suits. Behind them, leaning against the far wall with his arms crossed over his chest, stood Alessandro Moretti.

Elena felt the blood drain entirely from her face.

They know, was her first terrifying thought. They found us. Marcus tracked us down, or worse, Mr. Moretti knows I lied on my background check.

She unlocked the door, opening it just a few inches. “Mr. Hale? Is something wrong?”

Richard stepped back, allowing the tall, imposing figure of Alessandro Moretti to take center stage. Up close, the mafia boss was overwhelming. He smelled of rain, cedar, and expensive tobacco. His dark eyes swept over her face with a terrifying intensity that made Elena’s knees tremble.

“Step outside, Miss Carter,” Alessandro said. His voice was smooth, quiet, and carried an absolute authority that demanded obedience.

Elena swallowed her panic, stepped into the hallway, and pulled the door almost shut behind her. “Mr. Moretti, if I made a mistake with the silver downstairs, or if I left something uncleaned—”

“Your work is fine,” Alessandro interrupted smoothly. He gestured toward the long, dark corridor leading toward the main house. “Walk with me.”

Elena hesitated, looking back at her door. “My daughter is inside alone—”

“My men will stand guard at your door,” Alessandro said, his tone leaving no room for negotiation. “Not a soul will enter. You have my word.”

Realizing she had no choice, Elena walked alongside the feared mob lord through the quiet halls of the mansion. Her mind raced through every nightmare scenario. Had Mia broken something valuable? Had they been caught taking extra food from the kitchen?

They entered his private office. The heavy door clicked shut, locking them inside a world of dark leather, brass lamps, and the sound of falling rain.

Alessandro didn't sit down. He walked behind his desk, hit a key on his laptop, and turned the screen toward her.

“Watch,” he commanded gently.

Elena approached the desk, her hands trembling inside her robe pockets. She looked at the screen.

When she saw the black-and-white infrared footage of Mia creeping down the hall with her battered stuffed rabbit, Elena felt her throat seize. Her heart stopped beating.

“Oh God,” Elena gasped, tears instantly springing to her eyes. She fell to her knees in front of the desk, clasping her hands together in desperate plea. “Mr. Moretti, please! Please don't hurt her! She’s only three! She doesn't understand! I told her not to wander, I swear I did! She thinks babies need comforting—she doesn't know who you are!”

Alessandro stared down at the kneeling woman. A strange, sharp pang hit his chest. He wasn't used to people begging for mercy over something so pure. In his world, people begged when they were guilty.

He stepped out from behind the desk, reached down, and took Elena by her elbows, lifting her back to her feet. His touch was firm, but unexpectedly gentle.

“Look at the screen, Elena,” Alessandro said softly, calling her by her first name for the first time. “Don't look at your daughter. Look at mine.”

Elena wiped a tear from her cheek and forced herself to look at the monitor.

She watched Mia reach through the crib rails. She watched Mia place her tiny hand over baby Sophia’s chest. And then she watched the impossible happen: the tormented, sleepless infant calmed down, rested her head against the rabbit, and closed her eyes in peaceful sleep.

Elena blinked, stunned. “Sophia… she slept?”

“For eleven months, my daughter has screamed until her throat bled,” Alessandro whispered, his voice cracking slightly with a raw emotion he hadn't shown anyone in a year. “Doctors couldn't fix it. Nannies couldn't fix it. I couldn't fix it.”

He turned to face Elena, his dark eyes burning into hers.

“Your daughter did.”

Elena stood in the quiet office, the reality of the situation slowly washing over her. “You’re… you’re not angry?”

“Angry?” Alessandro let out a short, hollow laugh. “I am a man who controls half this city, Miss Carter. I have army officers, politicians, and billionaires bowing to my will. But tonight, I am just a father whose daughter finally found peace because of your child.”

He stepped closer, his towering shadow enveloping her.

“Starting tomorrow, your duties as a housekeeper are terminated.”

Elena gasped, horror returning to her eyes. “Mr. Moretti, please—”

“You and Mia are moving to the east wing,” Alessandro continued smoothly, overriding her panic. “You will receive a master suite next to Sophia’s nursery. Your salary will be tripled. You will no longer clean silver or scrub floors.”

Elena stared at him, completely speechless. “I… I don't understand. What do you want from us?”

Alessandro looked back at the screen, where the image of little Mia holding Sophia’s hand remained paused.

“I want your daughter to keep visiting mine,” Alessandro said softly. “And in return, I will give you something money cannot buy.”

May you like

He leaned down, his eyes turning to dark steel.

“Whoever you are running from, Elena… whoever made you look at the gates with such fear in your eyes… they will never touch you here. You and Mia are under my protection now.”
