Chapter 34 - The Long Twilight

The evening shadows stretched long and deep across the manicured lawns of the Duca estate as the sun dipped below the distant western ridge, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple, crimson, and gold. Lorenzo sat on the stone bench near the central fountain, watching the water arc gracefully into the marble basin before falling back with a soft, rhythmic splash.
Emma walked out onto the terrace, carrying a light wool shawl which she draped gently over her grandfather's shoulders. He looked smaller tonight, his broad frame softened by the creeping weight of years, though his eyes retained their sharp, piercing intelligence.
"The air is turning cold," Lorenzo said quietly, looking up at her with a faint, knowing smile. "Winter comes early in this valley."
"The heating systems in the main house have been updated," Emma replied, sitting down on the edge of the stone bench beside him. "The estate is insulated against anything the weather can bring."
"I wasn't talking about the weather, Emma," Lorenzo murmured, his gaze drifting toward the sprawling skyline visible in the distance, where thousands of lights were beginning to flicker on across the city like a vast, artificial constellation. "I was talking about time."
Emma was silent for a moment. She reached out, taking his weathered hand in hers, feeling the strength that had once held an entire underworld together now fragile and thin.
"You built all of this out of nothing," Emma said softly, her voice carrying a rare, profound warmth. "You took a chaotic, violent world and forced it to obey your will. You gave us a name that commands respect from every corner of the globe."

"And you took what I built and turned it into law," Lorenzo replied, turning his head to look at her directly. "A kingdom of steel and glass, ruled by someone who never flinches, never doubts, and never loses her grip. I could not have asked for a better heir, Emma. You are the Duca family incarnate."
They sat together in the gathering twilight, the sounds of the city fading into a distant, muted hum far below them. There were no ghosts left to haunt them, no enemies lurking in the dark, and no challenges waiting beyond the horizon. The underworld was gone, replaced by an absolute, sovereign peace that belonged entirely to them.
