Chapter 5 - The War for the Harbor

By 1:00 a.m., the Drake Hotel was surrounded by police cruisers and federal vehicles, but Raphael and Margot had already left through the private underground service exit.

Their black armored sedan raced through the blinding snowstorm toward the Santoro Logistics Building on the riverfront.

Inside the quiet rear cabin of the vehicle, Margot sat close to Raphael. Her emerald dress was slightly dusted with glass fragments from the chandelier, but her hands were steady, rested on her lap.

Raphael reached over, taking her hand in his large, warm palm, squeezing it gently.

"Are you hurt?" he asked softly, his eyes filled with intense concern.

"No," Margot replied, looking at him with a calm, trust-filled smile. "I knew you wouldn't let him shoot me."

Raphael looked at her, marveling at the unshakeable strength inside this quiet woman who had once slept on a concrete basement floor.

"Julian Moretti’s lieutenants won't accept this defeat easily," Raphael warned her, his tone turning serious. "He’s cornered now. His men will attempt a desperate raid on Port 4 tonight to destroy the physical ledgers before the state auditors arrive in the morning."

"Then we need to be at Port 4," Margot said instantly.

"No, Margot," Raphael argued firmly. "It's too dangerous. I am sending you to my estate in Lake Forest under heavy security."

Margot turned her body toward him, taking both of his hands in hers, her hazel eyes blazing with determination.

"Raphael, listen to me," she insisted. "The original green-ink ledgers aren't at Port 4. I moved them to the vault behind Row 12 in the main building basement three hours before the gala. What I left at Port 4 is a decoy stack filled with dummy accounts designed to trigger the security alarms the moment someone opens the safe."

Raphael stared at her in utter astonishment. A slow, incredible laugh escaped his lips.

"You laid a trap for Moretti’s strike team," Raphael realized out loud.

"Numbers and strategy, Raphael," Margot said with a quiet, proud smile. "I learned long ago that if you want to catch a thief, you leave a box in the dark that looks expensive."

Ten minutes later, the armored sedan pulled up outside the dark, snow-covered Santoro Logistics Building.

The heavy iron gates of Port 4 were silent. Suddenly, three red emergency flares erupted near the river docks, followed by the distant wail of silent silent security alarms triggered at the secondary facility.

Moretti’s strike team had walked straight into Margot’s trap.

Federal task force vehicles and Chicago SWAT teams, tipped off anonymously by Margot’s digital log system thirty minutes prior, swarmed the docklands, arresting thirty of Moretti’s top enforcers without a single shot fired.

Inside the quiet, warm main building, Raphael led Margot up the private elevator to his penthouse office.

The floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a breathtaking view of the city skyline, bathed in the soft, tranquil white light of falling snow. The war was over. The Moretti empire was dismantled, the debt was cleared, and the Santoro estate was fully secured.

Raphael took off his heavy suit jacket, tossing it onto the leather sofa. He walked over to where Margot stood near the glass window, looking out at the freezing lake.

He stood behind her, wrapping his long arms gently around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. Margot leaned back into his warm embrace, resting her head against his shoulder, feeling a profound sense of safety she had never known in her entire life.

"No more basements, Margot," Raphael whispered into her ear, his breath warm and gentle.

"No more basements," she agreed softly.

"No more counting pennies," he added, kissing the soft skin behind her ear.

Margot turned around in his arms, wrapping her slender hands around his neck, looking up into the dark, loving eyes of the most powerful man in Chicago.

"I still like numbers, Raphael," she teased softly.

"Is that so?" Raphael smiled, leaning down until his lips were inches from hers. "And what is your favorite number tonight, my archivist?"

May you like

"One," Margot whispered. "Just you and me."

Raphael leaned down and kissed her—a deep, passionate, and soul-stirring kiss that sealed their bond forever against the winter night.
