Chapter 2 - The Gilded Cage of Greenwich

The heavy iron gates of the Cross Estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, swung open silently, allowing the convoy of three black armored SUVs to roll up the long, winding driveway.

The estate was a sprawling, forty-acre fortress surrounded by stone walls, surveillance towers, and manicured lawns. To the outside world, it was an architectural masterpiece of French neoclassical design. To Claire, it was a familiar, beautiful prison.

The SUVs came to a stop in front of the grand marble portico. Marco, Gabriel's chief of security, stepped out first, scanning the perimeter with practiced eyes before opening the door for Claire and the children.

"Welcome back, Mrs. Cross," Marco said, offering a respectful nod.

"It's Bennett now, Marco," Claire corrected softly as she helped Ethan and Noah out of the vehicle.

Liam scrambled out on his own, his wide green eyes taking in the massive mansion, the fountain shooting streams of illuminated water into the night air, and the armed men standing discreetly near the treeline.

"Mommy," Liam whispered, tugging on Claire's coat. "Is this a castle?"

Before Claire could answer, the massive front doors opened, and a familiar figure rushed down the marble steps. It was Mrs. Gable, the estate’s head housekeeper, a motherly woman in her late sixties who had served the Cross family for over two decades.

"Oh, my sweet Lord," Mrs. Gable cried out, tears brimming in her eyes as she looked at Claire, then dropped her gaze to the three little boys. "Claire... my dear child! And these... these are..."

"They're Gabriel's, Mrs. Gable," Claire said, offering a weak, exhausted smile.

Mrs. Gable covered her mouth, let out a choked sob, and immediately knelt down on the cold stone. "Look at you three! Blessed angels! Oh, I need to get the master suite prepared, I need to heat up some milk, I need to—"

"Deep breath, Mrs. Gable," Gabriel's voice commanded gently as he stepped out of the trailing SUV. He walked up the stairs, unbuttoning his coat. "Have the east wing guest suites prepared. The ones overlooking the rose garden. Make sure they are warm and stocked with whatever children eat these days."

"Right away, Mr. Cross!" Mrs. Gable scrambled up, practically beaming with joy as she gestured for the children to follow her inside. "Come along, little ones! Mrs. Gable has fresh chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen!"

Ethan's eyes lit up instantly. "Cookies?!"

Even Liam’s stoic defense weakened at the mention of baked goods. Within seconds, the three boys were following Mrs. Gable into the warm, glowing foyer, their small footsteps echoing against the marble floors.

Claire made to follow them, but Gabriel’s hand gently caught her elbow.

"Claire," he said softly.

She stopped, stepping out of his reach before turning to face him. The night air was brisk, blowing stray strands of chestnut hair across her face.

"Your men are everywhere, Gabriel," Claire said, gesturing toward the guards stationed around the driveway. "Is this really necessary?"

"Three hours ago, a photograph of you and the boys at the gala was posted on a high-society blog," Gabriel explained, pulling his encrypted phone from his pocket. "By midnight, it was picked up by the New York Post. By two in the morning, my intelligence network intercepted three separate communications from the Moretti crime family trying to confirm the identity of the children."

Claire felt a cold shiver run down her spine. "The Morettis... I thought you destroyed them three years ago."

"I broke their syndicate, but Victor Moretti is still alive, hiding out in New Jersey," Gabriel said grimly, his face hardening. "He is desperate, broke, and seeking revenge for his brother's imprisonment. If he realizes those three boys are my legitimate heirs, he will use them to destroy me."

"They aren't your heirs, Gabriel!" Claire snapped, her quiet anger flaring up again. "They are innocent children who don't even know what a crime syndicate is!"

"They carry my blood, Claire!" Gabriel countered, stepping closer, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "In my world, that makes them targets whether you like it or not! You think you protected them by hiding in upstate New York? You were a sitting duck! One leak, one careless photo from a school play, and Victor Moretti could have snatched all three of them in broad daylight!"

Claire swallowed hard, unable to offer a rebuttal. Deep down, she knew he was right. She had lived in constant fear of this exact scenario for five years.

"They are safe here," Gabriel added, his voice softening slightly as he looked at her eyes. "I swear to you on my life, Claire. Nothing will touch them while they are under this roof. Nothing will touch you."

"I don't care about myself," Claire whispered, turning her back on him and walking toward the grand entrance. "I just want my sons to survive your life."

While Mrs. Gable settled the boys into the grand east wing suite—which had been frantically outfitted with extra pillows, warm blankets, and trays of warm milk and cookies—Gabriel retreated to his private study on the ground floor.

The study was a sanctuary of dark oak, leather, and bulletproof glass. It was where Gabriel managed both sides of his massive empire: the legitimate multi-billion-dollar logistics firm, and the underworld network that ensured no one disrupted his supply chains.

Gabriel poured himself three fingers of aged scotch and downed it in one smooth swallow. He stood at the window, staring out into the dark gardens.

A heavy knock rattled the thick oak door.

"Enter," Gabriel called out.

Marco stepped inside, holding an iPad. His expression was grave.

"Boss," Marco said, stepping up to the mahogany desk. "We have a situation."

"Define situation," Gabriel replied without turning around.

"Serena Vale is outside the front gate," Marco reported. "She brought her personal publicist and two photographers from Page Six. She’s demanding to speak with you, claiming you abandoned her at the gala and demanding an explanation about... the children."

Gabriel’s jaw tightened. A cold, lethal spark flared in his eyes.

When he had divorced Claire five years ago, he had convinced himself it was necessary. His empire was under heavy attack, his life was constantly threatened, and he had foolishly believed Claire was too gentle, too soft, to survive the darkness that surrounded him. Serena had been a convenient distraction—a glamorous, superficial woman who didn't care where his money came from as long as the champagne kept flowing.

He had spent five years realizing what an absolute fool he had been. Serena had never been a wife; she had been an accessory. And tonight, her greed and vanity were threatening the safety of his true family.

"Marco," Gabriel said quietly, turning around to face his lieutenant. "Tell Miss Vale that if she or her photographers take a single picture of this property, I will buy her modeling agency by morning and terminate her career permanently."

Marco nodded grimly. "And regarding her personal relationship with you?"

"There is no relationship," Gabriel stated coldly. "Issue a formal press statement from Cross Enterprises. Announce that Miss Vale and I ended our association weeks ago. Effective immediately, she is stripped of her position as the spokesperson for the Cross Foundation."

"She won't take that lying down, Boss," Marco warned. "She knows a lot about your personal schedule over the last few years. She might go to the feds or the press."

"Let her try," Gabriel sneered. "Have our legal team serve her with a non-disclosure agreement audit. If she utters one word about Claire or my sons to the media, ruin her financially."

"Understood, Boss." Marco paused, leaning forward slightly. "And what about Victor Moretti? We tracked a suspicious vehicle circling the perimeter of the upstate house where Mrs. Cross was living. Moretti’s men were already looking for her before the gala."

Gabriel’s scotch glass shattered in his hand. Thick crystal fragments and golden liquid spilled across his knuckles, but Gabriel didn't even flinch.

"They were already tracking her?" Gabriel whispered, his voice dangerously soft.

"Yes, Boss. It looks like someone inside our corporate office leaked Claire's unlisted address to Moretti two weeks ago."

A terrifying silence filled the study. Gabriel picked up a linen napkin, casually wiping the blood and scotch from his hand as his mind processed the information.

If Claire hadn't brought the boys to the gala in Manhattan tonight... Moretti’s hitmen would have invaded her home in upstate New York within forty-eight hours.

She thought she was hiding from Gabriel, but in reality, walking into that gala had accidentally saved her children’s lives.

"Find the mole in my office," Gabriel ordered, his gray-green eyes flashing with murderous intent. "I want a name by sunrise, Marco. And mobilize the heavy tactical teams. Double the guards around the Greenwich estate. No one enters, no one leaves without my personal clearance."

"Yes, Boss." Marco turned to leave, but stopped at the door. "Mr. Cross?"

"What?"

"The boys..." Marco offered a rare, genuine smile. "They look just like you when you were young, Boss. Fierce."

A faint, bittersweet smile touched Gabriel's lips for a fraction of a second before vanishing. "Go do your job, Marco."

Late into the night, long after the house had fallen silent, Claire sat on the edge of the large king-sized bed in the east wing.

Ethan and Noah were fast asleep, curled up together under a heavy duvet, snoring softly. Liam, however, was sitting up against the headboard, his small arms wrapped around his knees, staring intently at the door.

"Liam, baby," Claire whispered softly, running her fingers through his dark hair. "You need to sleep. It’s almost three in the morning."

"I don't like those men outside with the radios," Liam said quietly, his gray-green eyes serious beyond his years. "Are they bad men, Mommy?"

Claire felt a pang of sorrow in her chest. She pulled Liam into her arms, hugging him tightly. "No, sweetie. They are here to make sure we are safe."

"Is the man... is our dad a bad man?" Liam asked, looking up at her face. "The angry lady called him scary."

Claire closed her eyes, remembering the young, loving man who used to make her laugh in their small apartment before the Cross empire consumed his soul. She remembered the man who had driven through a blizzard to hold her hand in a hospital corridor. And then she remembered the man who handed her divorce papers without a single tear in his eyes.

"Your father... is a complicated man, Liam," Claire said gently. "He has done things I don't agree with. But he loves you. I saw it in his eyes tonight. He would never let anything bad happen to you."

"Do you love him?" Liam asked innocently.

The question hung in the air like a heavy mist. Claire looked toward the bedroom door, knowing that somewhere in this vast, lonely mansion, Gabriel was awake, carrying the weight of his dark world on his shoulders.

"I used to," Claire whispered, her voice barely audible. "A long time ago."

The bedroom door creaked open slightly.

Claire looked up sharply. Gabriel was standing in the doorway, shadow-framed by the warm light of the hallway. He had stripped off his tuxedo jacket and tie, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the exhaustion etched into his handsome face.

He didn't say a word. He just stood there, staring at Claire holding their son, his eyes filled with a raw, agonizing longing that made Claire's breath catch in her throat.

May you like

For a long moment, their eyes locked across the quiet room—a silent battle between a past full of heartbreak and an uncertain, dangerous future.

Without a word, Gabriel softly pulled the door shut, leaving Claire alone in the dark with her sleeping sons.
