Chapter 5 - The Purge of Santa Fe

The weeks following the attack on the Calderon estate were marked by a ruthless, quiet storm.

Raphael Calderon did not make public threats. He did not launch noisy war on the streets. Instead, he operated like a surgeon. Using his vast financial network, his control over northern infrastructure, and his deep ties to law enforcement and underground syndicates alike, Rafe systematically dismantled Marco Rossi’s entire organization within twenty-one days.

Properties were seized by federal authorities on "anonymous tip-offs." Bank accounts in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands were frozen. Key lieutenants who had supported Rossi’s raid vanished quietly into the high desert, never to be heard from again.

By the end of the month, the Rossi name was completely erased from New Mexico.

While the city whispered about the dark, invisible broom that had swept through the state, life inside the Calderon estate had transformed into a haven of peace and high-society elegance.

The damaged west wing had been completely rebuilt, replaced with a magnificent sunroom featuring floor-to-ceiling glass, plush Italian sofas, and a state-of-the-art kitchen where Ellie cooked every day.

However, Ellie was no longer the nanny.

She stood in front of the full-length mirror in the master suite, staring at her reflection in utter disbelief. She was wearing a custom-tailored emerald green silk gown designed by a top fashion house in Milan. The dress hugged her curves perfectly, accentuating her broad hips, slender waist, and glowing skin. A vintage diamond necklace—a Calderon family heirloom—sparkled around her neck.

Behind her, the door opened softly.

Rafe walked into the room, dressed in a sharp, bespoke black tuxedo. He stopped in his tracks, his gray eyes darkening as he took in the sight of her.

"You are breathtaking, Ellie," Rafe said softly, walking up behind her. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder as they looked at their reflection together.

Ellie smiled, leaning her head back against him. "I still feel like I'm dreaming, Rafe. A month ago, I was wiping down dirty tables at Casa Mirador, dodging an abusive manager."

"Martin Vale was fired two weeks ago, by the way," Rafe mentioned casually, kissing the side of her neck. "I bought the building. It’s yours now if you want it. You can turn it into whatever restaurant you dream of."

Ellie turned around in his arms, gasping. "Rafe! You bought Casa Mirador?!"

"I bought the whole block," Rafe corrected with a smooth, dangerous smile. "Nobody disrespects my queen or my daughter and stays in business."

Ellie laughed, shaking her head, though her heart melted at his fierce loyalty. She reached up, straightening his black bow tie. "You are ridiculous, Raphael Calderon."

"I am a man who knows what he wants," Rafe replied, his voice growing serious. He cupped her face in his broad hands, his eyes locked onto hers with intense sincerity. "Ellie, before you came into our lives, this house was a cage. I was a man trapped in the dark, watching my daughter fade away. You gave her back her voice. You gave me back my heart. You fought for us when you had every reason to run."

Ellie’s brown eyes shimmered with tears. "I love you, Rafe. I love Sophia. I fell in love with both of you the night I knelt beside that table."

Rafe smiled—a rare, full, dazzling smile that made him look ten years younger. "Then tonight, the whole city is going to know it."

Tonight was the annual Santa Fe High Desert Water Foundation Gala—the biggest high-society event of the year, hosted by Calderon High Desert Water Systems. It was the night Raphael Calderon officially stepped into the light, not as a feared mob boss, but as a legitimate powerhouse, a loving father, and a man devoted to the woman who had saved his family.

Downstairs, the front door opened, and Sophia ran up the stairs wearing a matching emerald green dress, her dark hair styled in gorgeous curls.

"Papà! Ellie! È ora! L'auto è qui!" Sophia cheered happily in perfect, joyous Italian. (Dad! Ellie! It's time! The car is here!)

Rafe extended his arm to Ellie. "Shall we, my love?"

Ellie placed her hand firmly on his forearm, holding Sophia’s hand with the other. "Let's go."
