Chapter 7 - The Man Who Finally Held His Son

Elena backed away.

The handle moved.

Locked.

“Open the door.”

The voice sounded exactly like Lorenzo.

Matteo cried harder.

Margaret pointed toward the adjoining dressing room.

“Go.”

Elena carried Matteo inside.

Margaret followed.

They locked the second door.

Outside, something struck the nursery entrance.

Once.

Twice.

Then silence.

Elena pressed Matteo against her shoulder.

His body trembled.

The old fear.

Noise.

Tension.

Danger.

She began humming Sofia’s lullaby.

Margaret joined.

Matteo slowly quieted.

Then gunfire sounded far below.

Elena flinched.

Matteo screamed again.

The dressing-room door shook.

Someone had entered the nursery.

“Elena.”

Vittorio.

No imitation now.

His real voice.

“You don't understand what Lorenzo is.”

Elena remained silent.

“He will destroy that child eventually.”

Margaret whispered, “Don't answer.”

Vittorio continued.

“I tried to save this family from him.”

Elena could not remain silent.

“You made a baby sick.”

“I created pressure.”

“He was starving.”

“A temporary problem.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Elena felt something inside her turn cold.

To Vittorio, Matteo had never been a child.

He was leverage.

The dressing-room handle moved.

Then another voice came from the nursery.

Lorenzo.

Real this time.

“Step away from that door.”

Silence.

Vittorio laughed.

“There you are.”

Elena heard movement.

Lorenzo spoke.

“You wanted me.”

“I wanted you gone.”

“You killed Sofia.”

“You killed Sofia.”

Lorenzo went silent.

Vittorio continued.

“She was driving your car because of you. She was running because of you. Everything that happened began with you.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Those were the exact words Lorenzo had probably told himself every night.

Then something remarkable happened.

He refused them.

“No.”

Vittorio stopped.

Lorenzo’s voice remained steady.

“I made mistakes. Sofia knew them. Elena knows them. Someday my son will know them.”

A pause.

“But you ordered that car hit.”

Another.

“You manipulated Matteo’s treatment.”

Another.

“You chose this.”

Elena felt tears come.

Lorenzo was no longer carrying Vittorio’s guilt.

“Put the weapon down,” Lorenzo said.

Sirens sounded outside.

Vittorio cursed.

“You brought police here?”

“Federal agents.”

“You betrayed your own family.”

“No.”

Lorenzo’s answer was immediate.

“I finally chose it.”

Movement.

A crash.

Then Marco shouted.

“Clear!”

Elena waited.

“Lorenzo?”

“It’s me.”

She still did not open.

“Prove it.”

Silence.

Then he began singing.

Sofia’s lullaby.

Badly.

Elena laughed through tears.

She opened the door.

Lorenzo stood there.

His suit jacket was torn.

A cut marked his eyebrow.

But he was alive.

Behind him, federal agents restrained Vittorio.

Lorenzo did not look at his uncle.

He looked at Matteo.

“Give him to me.”

Elena did.

Matteo settled against his father.

Vittorio saw it.

For the first time, the older man looked defeated.

Not because of the agents.

Because the broken nephew he had manipulated was standing upright with his son in his arms.

“You'll lose everything,” Vittorio said.

Lorenzo looked at him.

“Not everything.”

Agents led Vittorio away.

The investigations that followed reached far beyond the mansion.

Clinics were audited.

Fraudulent companies were closed.

Several medical contractors were charged.

Claire Benson surrendered and agreed to cooperate.

She admitted Vittorio had paid her to introduce supplements into Matteo’s feeding routine and falsify records.

She claimed she had never intended serious harm.

Elena did not care what she intended.

Matteo had suffered.

But Matteo was recovering.

That mattered more.

Weeks passed.

His weight increased.

His feeding improved.

The terror around bottles faded.

Dr. Kaplan reduced his visits.

One afternoon he weighed Matteo and smiled.

“Right where I want him.”

Lorenzo looked suspicious.

“That's it?”

Kaplan laughed.

“You spent months demanding complicated answers. Enjoy a simple one.”

Elena stood nearby.

Matteo was in Lorenzo’s arms.

He had become almost impossible to remove from them.

Lorenzo conducted phone calls while carrying him.

Read reports while rocking him.

Walked meetings with a baby asleep against his shoulder.

Men who once discussed millions around a polished conference table now waited patiently while their boss burped his son.

Elena found this deeply entertaining.

“You’re smiling,” Lorenzo said one afternoon.

“No.”

“You are.”

“I was thinking.”

“Dangerous.”

“You used to be terrifying.”

“I’m still terrifying.”

Matteo sneezed.

Lorenzo immediately checked his forehead.

Elena laughed.

“You’re absolutely terrifying.”

Margaret stayed nearby.

Repairing eight months of hurt was harder.

Elena did not forgive her immediately.

Margaret did not ask her to.

They began with breakfast.

Then walks.

Then conversations.

Some ended in tears.

Some ended in anger.

But they continued.

That was enough.

One evening, Lorenzo found Elena packing.

He stopped in her doorway.

“What are you doing?”

“Packing.”

“I can see that.”

“Then why ask?”

“Where are you going?”

“My apartment.”

“No.”

Elena stared at him.

“No?”

“Matteo needs you.”

“He has you.”

Lorenzo had no answer.

“That was the point,” Elena said.

“I wasn't supposed to replace his mother.”

“You didn't.”

“I wasn't supposed to become permanent.”

“You aren't staff anymore.”

“That makes this worse.”

Lorenzo looked genuinely confused.

“Why?”

“Because I don't know what I am here.”

Silence.

That frightened him more than threats ever had.

Elena closed her suitcase.

“You learned to hold him.”

“Yes.”

“You learned to feed him.”

“Yes.”

“You learned to listen.”

He smiled faintly.

“Sometimes.”

“You don't need me.”

Matteo made a sound from Lorenzo’s arms.

Elena touched his cheek.

“I love him.”

Lorenzo’s expression changed.

“That’s why I have to leave before I start pretending he’s mine.”

She picked up the suitcase.

Lorenzo stepped aside.

He did not order her to stay.

That mattered.

Elena walked toward the stairs.

At the front door, Rosa hugged her.

Margaret waited outside.

Elena turned once.

Lorenzo remained at the top of the staircase holding Matteo.

Neither waved.

Elena left.

Three days passed.

Then four.

On the fifth morning, someone knocked on Elena’s apartment door.

She opened it.

Lorenzo stood there.

No guards.

No black tie.

No intimidating entourage.

Matteo was strapped against his chest in a baby carrier.

Elena stared.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

“Is Matteo okay?”

“He’s fine.”

“Then why are you here?”

Lorenzo looked uncomfortable.

“I need to ask you something.”

“What?”

He glanced down at Matteo.

Then back at Elena.

“I know he can live without you now.”

Elena’s throat tightened.

Lorenzo continued.

“The problem is that I don't know if I want to.”

She said nothing.

Neither did he.

Then a black sedan stopped across the street.

Lorenzo’s expression changed.

A man stepped out.

He held a sealed envelope.

On the front was Sofia’s handwriting.

May you like

And beneath Elena’s name were three words:

FOR MATTEO’S FUTURE.
