Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Neonatal Ward

The fluorescent lights of Mercy Community Hospital hummed with a sterile persistence as Norah resumed her routine the following morning. Despite the emotional turbulence of the previous night, she arrived before sunrise, checking monitors, reviewing charts, and ensuring the neonatal unit was fully prepared for the morning shift.

Yet, the atmosphere in the hospital had shifted perceptibly. Nurses whispered near the reception desk, and Dr. Gerald Finch—the senior administrator who had previously reprimanded Norah at Dominic's implicit behest—suddenly appeared in the hallway with an overly deferential smile.

"Good morning, Norah," Finch said, adjusting his tie as she walked past. "I trust everything is running smoothly in your sector?"

Norah stopped, narrowing her eyes slightly at the sudden warmth in his tone. "Everything is running as it always does, Dr. Finch. With or without administrative interference."

Finch chuckled nervously. "Of course. Of course. By the way, I received a rather... unexpected memorandum from Reyes Holdings early this morning. It appears their philanthropic foundation is doubling its endowment to our wing, contingent upon your continued oversight and... promotion to head nurse of pediatric logistics."

Norah’s stomach tightened. Dominic had moved faster than she anticipated. He was trying to secure her environment, building a gilded cage of security and privilege around her and Lily whether she wanted it or not.

"Please inform Mr. Reyes's office that I require no special favors," Norah said coldly. "I earned my position through twelve years of clinical work, not charity."

Before Finch could reply, a commotion near the emergency entrance drew their attention. Two security guards were escorting a frantic man out of the lobby while a woman wept loudly near the triage desk. Norah immediately stepped past Finch, her instincts as a senior nurse taking over.

As she approached the commotion, she noticed something odd. One of the men lingering near the pillar—wearing a dark suit and earpiece—did not belong to Mercy’s regular security detail. He was professional, watchful, and entirely out of place in a community hospital.

Marco Bell stepped out from behind the pillar, nodding subtly to Norah.

Norah marched straight up to him, keeping her voice low and sharp. "What are you doing here, Marco?"

Marco raised his hands defensively, though his eyes scanned the perimeter with practiced vigilance. "Mr. Reyes’s orders. After last night, security protocols have been elevated. You and Lily are under active protection, whether you like it or not."

"I am a nurse, Marco, not a hostage," Norah hissed, her hands balling into fists inside her pockets. "Pull your men out of this hospital right now, or I will call local law enforcement and report a private militia operating on public health grounds."

"Try calling them," Marco replied calmly, tapping his earpiece. "You'll find the local precinct received a direct directive from the district attorney’s office confirming our operational presence."

Norah stared at him in disbelief. Dominic was exercising his terrifying reach across the city, treating her life like a tactical board game where he dictated every move.

The anger that had smoldered inside her since their meeting in his office flared into a hot, blinding fury. She didn't wait for Marco to finish explaining; she turned on her heel, bypassed the elevator, and marched straight to the administrative staircase, pulling out her phone to dial a number she hadn't called in five years.
