Chapter 11 - The Meeting at Blackwater

The platform fell with a roar.

Caleb drove forward.

Too slow.

Elise reached him from the side passage and threw her weight into the wheelchair.

They cleared the impact zone by inches.

Steel drums crashed behind them.

Concrete cracked.

Dust exploded through the warehouse.

“Elise!”

Caleb's voice was fury and terror.

“You promised!”

“You're welcome!”

Gunfire began.

Jonah's team entered through the south doors.

Silas disappeared behind armored barriers.

Victor grabbed Adrian.

But Adrian elbowed him and ran.

The fake vest slipped open.

Elise had been right.

No explosives.

Caleb fired toward Silas's guards while backing behind machinery.

“You were supposed to stay outside!”

“You were supposed to not get crushed!”

“That wasn't intentional!”

“Neither was me saving you!”

Adrian reached them.

“Can you argue later?”

Jonah arrived.

“Extraction route!”

They escaped through the loading dock.

But Silas and Victor were gone.

Back at the safe property, Caleb refused medical treatment until Elise sat beside him.

“You lied to me.”

“I changed my mind.”

“You promised.”

“You would've died.”

His expression was raw.

“You think watching you run under twenty tons of steel felt better?”

Elise stopped.

He continued.

“I need to know when you say something, you mean it.”

She stared.

“That sounds like trust.”

“It is.”

“Then trust me to make decisions.”

“Even bad ones?”

“Especially bad ones.”

Caleb looked exhausted.

“I don't know how.”

“I know.”

That answer hurt him.

She softened.

“You can learn.”

Their eyes held.

Caleb reached for her hand.

“Elise, I—”

Adrian entered.

“We have a problem.”

She sighed.

“Of course.”

Adrian removed the fake vest.

Inside its lining was a small recorder.

“They wanted Caleb to take this.”

Jonah examined it.

“Tracking device?”

“No.”

Adrian pressed play.

Rachel Parker's voice filled the room.

Elise stopped breathing.

She had not heard her mother's voice in eight years.

“If anyone finds this, my name is Rachel Parker.”

Elise covered her mouth.

Caleb moved beside her.

Rachel continued.

“Evelyn Rowan was murdered on October seventeenth. I saw Silas Rowan's driver force her car from the road.”

Caleb closed his eyes.

“My God.”

“She survived the first impact. I reached the vehicle. Evelyn gave me a recorder and told me to find Detective Samuel Price.”

Jonah's face crumpled.

His father.

Rachel continued.

“Evelyn said Silas had been moving women and children through businesses controlled by Victor Sloane. She had copies of everything.”

Caleb looked sick.

Victor had opposed trafficking years later.

Was Victor ally or enemy?

Rachel answered.

“Victor told Evelyn he would help expose Silas. I don't know whether to trust him.”

The recording crackled.

“She also told me something about Caleb.”

Caleb leaned forward.

“If Silas learns Caleb knows the truth, he'll kill his own son.”

Silence.

Rachel's voice weakened.

“Thomas Reed has the documents.”

The recording ended.

Elise cried silently.

Caleb put his hand over hers.

Nobody spoke for a long time.

Eventually Jonah whispered, “Our parents were trying to stop him.”

“Together,” Elise said.

Adrian sat down.

“And we're finishing what they started.”

Caleb looked at him.

“Why should I trust you?”

Adrian didn't flinch.

“You shouldn't.”

That surprised everyone.

“I gave Victor information years ago. I helped create this.”

“Why?”

“Because Silas had gambling debts over me. Victor offered to erase them.”

“You said Victor was the creditor.”

“I lied.”

Caleb's jaw tightened.

Adrian continued.

“I didn't know Silas was alive until six months ago.”

“What happened?”

“He contacted me.”

“And you didn't tell me.”

“He threatened my daughter.”

Caleb froze.

“You have a daughter?”

Adrian looked away.

“Her mother keeps her away from this family.”

“For good reason,” Elise said.

Adrian nodded.

“Silas said if I warned Caleb, he'd make sure she disappeared.”

Caleb's anger changed.

“Where is she?”

“Safe. For now.”

Elise understood Adrian's fear.

Silas didn't control people through loyalty.

He controlled them through whoever they loved.

Exactly what Victor had attempted with Elise.

“We need Thomas's documents,” Jonah said.

“The hotel search found only photographs.”

Elise replayed her mother's recording.

Thomas Reed has the documents.

Thomas had hidden evidence in places nobody wanted to clean.

The drain.

But perhaps he had another hiding place.

“Elise?”

She looked at Caleb.

“Thomas loved old hotels.”

“What?”

“He always said new buildings had no secrets.”

She remembered his office.

Books.

Architectural drawings.

An enormous framed photograph of the Bellgrave Imperial from 1926.

Something about it.

Then she remembered.

When Thomas died, his office was cleared.

But the framed photograph remained.

“His office.”

“The hotel renovated it,” Jonah said.

“But they kept the historical photograph in the lobby.”

Caleb understood.

They returned before dawn.

The hotel manager protested.

Caleb merely looked at him.

The protest ended.

The photograph hung beside reception.

Elise removed it.

Nothing behind it.

Her hope collapsed.

Then she touched the frame.

Heavy.

Too heavy.

Jonah cut the backing.

Inside were microfilm sheets.

Dozens.

Financial ledgers.

Names.

Shipments.

Police officials.

Judges.

Businesses.

And one signed document.

Authorization for Project Monarch.

Caleb read the signature.

Silas Rowan.

His father had ordered the bombing that nearly killed him.

Adrian whispered, “I'm sorry.”

Caleb stared at the paper.

Then another line caught Elise's attention.

Secondary authorization.

V. Sloane.

Victor had approved it too.

Whatever alliance Victor once had with Evelyn, he ultimately chose Silas.

Both men had betrayed Caleb's mother.

Both had participated in the attack against Caleb.

And both were still alive.

Jonah looked toward Caleb.

“We can end them.”

The old Caleb Rowan might have ordered executions.

Elise saw the thought pass through him.

Then he looked at her.

“What?”

She shook her head.

“Nothing.”

“No. Say it.”

“You decide who you want to be after this.”

His eyes lowered to the evidence.

Killing Silas would be easy.

Ending everything Silas represented would be harder.

Caleb finally said, “Copy everything.”

Jonah nodded.

“Then?”

“We take it to federal investigators.”

Everyone stared.

Adrian whispered, “That will expose us too.”

“I know.”

“You could go to prison.”

“I know.”

Caleb looked at Elise.

“If I keep protecting the empire, I'm protecting him.”

Elise squeezed his hand.

For the first time, Caleb Rowan chose a future that might cost him power instead of one designed to preserve it.

But Victor had one final advantage.

While they were copying Thomas's evidence, Elise's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A child's voice whispered:

“Are you Elise?”

“Yes.”

“My dad said you could help me.”

Elise looked at Adrian.

His face went white.

“Who is this?”

The child began crying.

“My name is Sophie.”

Adrian stood.

“My daughter.”

A man's voice replaced hers.

Silas Rowan.

“Bring me the evidence, Caleb.”

The call ended.

And Adrian collapsed into a chair.

May you like

Because Silas had finally taken the one person none of them could afford to sacrifice.
