Chapter 5 - The Wrath of the Phantom

The heavy steel door of the panic room shuddered as a heavy object slammed against it from the outside.

"Open up!" a harsh, unfamiliar voice shouted. "Blow the hinges!"

I pressed my back against the cold steel inside the sanctuary, holding Vivian’s trembling hand. "They're going to use explosives, Mrs. Calder. Stay away from the door."

Vivian looked up at me, her eyes surprisingly calm. "Julian is here, Emma. I can hear the car engines. My son never lets the wolves take his den."

As if summoned by her words, the muffled sound of a roaring V8 engine echoed from the courtyard above, followed immediately by the terrifying, distinctive rat-a-tat-tat of heavy tactical gunfire that didn't sound like standard weapons—it sounded like a military-grade counter-assault.

Outside the panic room, the shouting abruptly stopped.

A series of muffled grunts, breaking bones, and heavy thuds reverberated through the stone walls. Then, silence. Absolute, crushing silence.

Click.

The exterior keypad beeped, and the pneumatic hiss of the vault door releasing echoed through the small space.

I grabbed a heavy metal flashlight from the emergency shelf, raising it like a club, ready to strike whoever stepped through.

The heavy steel door swung wide open.

Julian Calder stood in the doorway.

His black tuxedo jacket was gone, his white dress shirt stained with dirt and dark crimson blood that wasn't his. In his right hand, he held a customized Sig Sauer pistol with a suppressor, the barrel still warm and smoking faintly. His dark hair was disheveled, and his eyes burned with an apocalyptic fury that made even the hardened security guards standing behind him in the corridor look away.

His gaze swept the room instantly, landing on me, then on Vivian, and finally spotting the unconscious mercenary I had knocked out lying further down the stone hallway.

Julian dropped his pistol into his holster, crossed the room in two long strides, and grabbed my shoulders.

"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his voice cracking slightly with a raw panic he couldn't entirely conceal.

"I'm fine," I breathed, my knees suddenly turning to water now that the adrenaline was fading. "The... the man in the hallway. I hit him with the fire extinguisher."

Julian looked down at my hands, which were bruised and trembling, then up at the fresh surgical tape on my cheek. A muscle feathered in his jaw. He didn't say another word; he simply pulled me into his arms, burying his face briefly against my shoulder in a fierce, protective embrace that took my breath away.

"You defended my mother," Julian whispered against my ear, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You fought them off alone."

"She's family," I whispered back, my arms wrapping gingerly around his waist.

Julian pulled back slowly, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the rest of the world fade into nothingness. Then, his expression hardened back into stone as he looked past us to Marcus, who stood waiting in the hallway.

"Marcus," Julian said, his voice dropping into the lethal register of a crime boss executing a final judgment. "Arthur Whitcomb thinks sending a hit squad to my home is an act of business. Tell the strike team to level every warehouse, shipping yard, and asset bearing his family name before sunrise. Leave him destitute."

"Consider it done, Boss," Marcus replied, turning sharply on his heel.

Julian turned back to me, taking my bruised hand gently in his. "Come, Emma. Let's get you upstairs. The war for Calder House is over. And I have a debt to repay to you."
