Chapter 8 - The Fallen Heir

Ten minutes later, I sat behind my grand mahogany desk in my private study.
The room was pristine, completely untouched by the violence that had swept through the rest of the mansion. The soft light of the desk lamp cast long shadows across the leather-bound books and heavy oil paintings.
The heavy double doors opened, and two of Marco’s men dragged Aldo Manfredi into the room, dropping him brutally onto his knees in front of my desk.
Aldo was a wreck. His tailored charcoal suit was torn and covered in black coal grease. His left leg was bent at an unnatural angle, and his face was bruised from his violent tumble down the concrete stairs.
He looked up at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of bitter hatred and overwhelming defeat.
"Shoot me and get it over with, Dario," Aldo spat, coughing up a spot of blood onto my Persian rug. "You think you've won? The syndicate is already fractured! Half the captains think you're dead! You can't run this empire from a wheelchair!"
I leaned forward across the desk, resting my chin on my hands, looking at the man I had trusted like a brother for twenty years.
"I'm not going to shoot you, Aldo," I said softly.
Aldo frowned, confusion flickering across his battered face. "What?"
"Death is too quick for a traitor," I said, my voice dropping into a low, terrifying tone. "And besides... I have a much better plan for you."
I signaled to Marco, who walked forward and placed a thick stack of legal documents and an encrypted satellite tablet onto the desk.
"Federal prosecutors have been trying to build a RICO case against our family for fifteen years, Aldo," I explained calmly. "They lacked the internal paper trail. But thanks to the black folder you brought to my bedroom three days ago—the succession plan with your signature on every page—I now have a complete, undeniable record of every illegal operation you ran behind my back."
Aldo’s face turned completely white. "Dario... no... you wouldn't—"
"I have already transferred full ownership of all legitimate corporations, shipping docks, and real estate holdings into a clean, irrevocable blind trust managed by Marco," I continued, unyielding as stone. "And as for the illegal operations? They are being handed directly to the United States Attorney’s Office in Manhattan."
"You're destroying the family!" Aldo screamed, trying to drag himself forward on his hands. "You're burning everything we built!"
May you like
"No, Aldo," I said, standing up from my chair without using my cane for the very first time in four months. "I am burning you. You will spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security federal supermax facility, sitting in a tiny concrete cell, knowing that the empire you tried to steal has been turned into a clean, legitimate fortune that you will never touch."
Marco’s men grabbed Aldo by his shoulders, dragging him kicking and screaming out of the study, his frantic pleas for mercy echoing down the long corridor until the heavy oak doors slammed shut.
