Chapter 6 - THE FORGED DEED

Two days after the bail hearing, Marcus Vance invited me and Aunt Karen to his law offices in downtown Raleigh. The conference room was sleek, with glass walls overlooking the city skyline, covered in whiteboards filled with complex financial diagrams and corporate connection lines.

Captain Sarah Mercer was already there, sitting beside a middle-aged woman in a professional suit whom Vance introduced as Special Agent Deborah Lin from the State Financial Crimes Bureau.

"Thank you for coming, Natalie," Marcus Vance said, gesturing for us to take a seat. "What we're about to show you goes far beyond a domestic dispute or a violent assault. Your stepmother and stepbrother have been running a sophisticated financial scam for nearly five years."

Agent Lin turned on a digital projector, throwing a scanned document onto the white screen at the end of the room.

"This is the quitclaim deed filed with the Cumberland County Register of Deeds four years ago," Agent Lin explained, pointing a laser pointer at the signature line at the bottom. "It purports to bear your signature, Natalie, relinquishing your fifty percent interest in your late mother’s half of the residential property on Oakridge Drive."

I looked at the signature. It was a crude imitation of my handwriting—my name written in slant script, but completely lacking the specific stroke patterns I had used since high school.

"I was in Kuwait when this document was notarized," I said. "Look at the date. June 14th."

"We checked your military deployment records," Agent Lin confirmed. "You were actively assigned to an forward operating base outside Erbil on that exact date. You weren't even in the Western Hemisphere."

"Who notarized it?" Aunt Karen asked, leaning forward with her hands flat on the table.

"A woman named Sandra Miller," Vance replied, tapping a folder on the table. "She happens to be Linda’s sister—your step-aunt. Sandra has been working as an independent notary in Fayetteville for twelve years. We served her with a federal subpoena yesterday morning. Under questioning by federal agents, she broke down in tears and signed a full confession."

"She admitted that Linda brought her the document already signed, and Sandra applied her official notary stamp and seal knowing full well you were out of the country," Agent Lin added.

"That's bank fraud, wire fraud, and grand larceny," Sarah Mercer said coldly. "And because it involved a deployed service member's property, it falls directly under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which carries massive statutory penalties."

"What did they do with the money once they got the equity loan?" I asked.

Vance clicked to the next slide. A complex flowchart appeared, showing the movement of $200,000 from the home equity loan into three separate bank accounts.

"As we suspected," Vance said, "the money was immediately transferred into an account for Support Our Heroes NC, a non-profit organization registered under Kyle’s name. Over the last three years, this 'charity' collected over $450,000 in public donations, state veteran development grants, and tax deductions."

"And where did that money go?" I asked.

"Not a single dollar went to a veteran," Agent Lin said, her voice dripping with disgust. "Over $180,000 was spent on leases for two luxury vehicles—a BMW M4 and an Audi Q7, both driven exclusively by Kyle. Another $120,000 went toward personal credit card debts belonging to Linda, including high-end retail shopping, spa trips, and home renovations. The rest was laundered through shell companies to pay Kyle a monthly 'executive salary'."

I sat back in my chair, taking a deep breath. For years, Linda had treated me like a parasite, calling me a burden to the family, making me feel like I owed them for every scrap of food I ate as a teenager. Meanwhile, she and her son were stealing my dead mother's house and using my military service as a front to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from actual charities.

"Does my father know about this?" I asked softly.

"We interviewed your father yesterday," Vance said. "Richard claims he had no idea the deed was forged. He said Linda told him you had signed the papers electronically before you left for deployment because you 'didn't want the hassle of owning property.' He signed the equity loan documents because Linda convinced him it was an investment in Kyle’s future."

"He was either completely blind, or he chose not to look," Aunt Karen said angrily.

"It doesn't matter whether he knew or not," Vance stated coldly. "His name is on the bank accounts. He signed the loan agreements. Legally, he is co-liable for the debt, and his credit is completely ruined. But more importantly, we now have enough evidence to file an immediate motion for quiet title, returning one hundred percent of your mother's portion of the property to your sole control, along with a freeze on all assets held by Linda and Kyle."

"What happens next?" I asked.

"Next," Vance said, closing his folder with a sharp snap, "the State Attorney General and the U.S. Attorney are issuing arrest warrants for Kyle Porter and Sandra Miller. By tonight, your stepmother will have plenty of company in jail."
