Chapter 10 - THE WEDDING THE PAST COULDN’T DESTROY

A year later, I stood in front of a mirror wearing a white dress.

Chloe stood behind me.

She adjusted my veil.

"Too tight?"

"No."

"Too loose?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Chloe."

She grinned.

"Just checking."

I turned toward her.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she reached into her bag.

"I have something for you."

She handed me a small box.

Inside was my father's old watch.

I stared at it.

"Where did you get this?"

"I bought it back."

My eyes filled.

She smiled.

"I figured Dad should be there."

That nearly destroyed me.

I hugged her.

And for the first time in years—

she hugged me back without expecting anything.

The ceremony was held at a quiet military chapel.

Not a ballroom.

Not a political event.

Not a performance.

Just the people who mattered.

Ethan waited at the end of the aisle.

And beside me stood Colonel Richard Vale.

The man who was supposed to have died.

The man my father had saved.

"You ready, Captain?"

I smiled.

"Ready."

As we walked, I looked at the faces around me.

Friends.

Officers.

Families.

People whose lives had been changed because the truth finally came out.

Then I saw an empty seat.

My mother's seat.

I hadn't invited her.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because boundaries were not cruelty.

They were survival.

At the last moment, I noticed a letter resting there.

No name.

No dramatic speech.

Just one sentence.

I AM SORRY I WASN'T THE MOTHER YOU DESERVED.

I read it once.

Then handed it to Chloe.

She squeezed my hand.

And we walked forward.

I didn't need to chase the past anymore.

May you like

I had finally reached my future.
