Chapter 7 - THOMAS BELL WANTED THE COMPANY

Thomas was easier to understand.

Money usually is.

Discovery showed he had spent two years trying to reenter Whitaker governance after I terminated his firm.

He believed Claire’s trust structure was flawed.

Maybe it was.

He also believed I had too much personal control.

That part was not entirely wrong.

His mistake was deciding manipulation was an acceptable method of correcting it.

He recruited Vanessa through estate-planning conversations.

Then blurred professional advice into personal strategy.

Eventually, business opportunity.

He proposed an advisory company that would manage trust assets if the current trustee structure changed.

His firm would earn significant fees.

Vanessa’s holding company would receive consulting interests.

Not ownership of my entire organization.

Nothing that dramatic.

Something more ordinary.

Fees.

Influence.

Access.

Power that accumulated slowly.

---

The board investigation embarrassed me.

Because several directors said things I did not want to hear.

“You travel too much.”

“You centralized family votes.”

“Staff are afraid to tell you bad news.”

“Your personal reputation creates corporate risk.”

All true enough to sting.

I could have fought.

Instead, I listened.

For once.

---

We changed the trust governance.

Not because Vanessa won.

Because Claire had built safeguards precisely so no one person should dominate forever.

Including me.

An independent institutional co-trustee joined.

Children’s assets received separate oversight.

My corporate voting powers were narrowed.

I hated it.

Then slept better.

Interesting.

---

Thomas lost his advisory role before he ever received it.

His conduct triggered professional review and civil litigation.

No cinematic downfall.

No mysterious disappearance.

Paperwork.

Depositions.

Insurance carriers.

Ethics counsel.

The slow machinery of consequences.

I found it deeply satisfying.

Marcus told me that was personal growth.

I fired him for six minutes.

May you like

Then rehired him because Sophie liked him.
