Chapter 7 - The Shift

The following weeks at the Lake Forest estate brought a transformation none of us expected.

The war with the Moretti family was over. Victor’s brutal retaliation had sent shockwaves through the Chicago underworld, cementing his absolute control over his territory. But inside the high stone walls of our secluded sanctuary, the violent world outside seemed to fade into a distant memory.

The ice between Victor and Finn was melting day by day.

Victor began taking his morning calls from the terrace while Finn ate his breakfast. He started coming home before six o'clock every evening, sitting on the rug in the living room to help Finn assemble his Lego sets. He still struggled with soft words—he was a man built on structure and strength—but his presence was no longer an intimidating shadow. It was a shelter.

And then there was the shift between Victor and me.

We never spoke about the night in the foyer, or the kiss he pressed into my palm, but the unspoken tension between us had morphed into something warm, deep, and utterly terrifying. We moved around each other like two people sharing an intimate secret.

One rainy Tuesday afternoon, while Finn was taking a nap upstairs, I was sitting in the library cataloging a stack of new children's books.

The heavy oak doors opened, and Victor walked in. He wasn't wearing his suit today; he wore a comfortable charcoal sweater and dark jeans, looking impossibly attractive and relaxed.

"He's asleep," I said, looking up from my desk with a smile.

"I know," Victor said, stepping into the room and closing the doors behind him. He walked over to the desk, leaning his hip against the edge, looking down at me. "I wanted to talk to you."

"About?"

"Your contract," he said flatly.

My heart dropped into my stomach. My smile vanished instantly. "My contract?"

Victor reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded white paper, laying it on the desk between us. "Your fourteen-month term as Finn's primary residential nanny expires next week."

I stared at the paper, a cold dread washing over me. In all the chaos of the past month, I had completely forgotten that my original contract was up for renewal.

"Oh," I whispered, my throat suddenly dry. "Right. I... I hadn't realized."

"I had my legal team draft a new agreement," Victor continued, his expression unreadable. "It doubles your current salary, offers full equity in my private educational trust, and guarantees lifetime security."

I looked at the paper, then up into his gray eyes. Why did his words feel like a slap in the face?

"A lifetime contract?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly. "You want to buy my next ten years, Victor?"

"I want to ensure Finn never loses you," Victor said, his tone turning businesslike—a defense mechanism I recognized all too well. "You're good for him, Harper. You've brought him back to life."

"And what about me?" I asked, standing up from my chair, anger flaring in my chest. "Am I just a permanent piece of inventory in your house? A very well-paid employee who keeps your son happy?"

Victor's eyes narrowed. "That isn't what I said."

"It's what you mean!" I snapped, coming around the desk to face him. "Every time things get real between us, you retreat behind your money, your contracts, and your authority! You treat me like a high-level asset because you're terrified of admitting that you actually care about me!"

"Harper—"

"I don't want your double salary, Victor!" I shouted, tears hot in my eyes. "I didn't stay when the bullets were flying because of a paycheck! I stayed because I love your son! And because I..."

I stopped dead in my tracks, my breath catching in my throat as the words hung in the air.

Because I love you.

I hadn't said it out loud, but the truth was burning so brightly between us that it might as well have been screamed from the rooftops.

Victor stood frozen, his eyes wide, his chest heaving under his sweater. The icy, logical mob boss was completely gone, replaced by a man looking at a woman who had stripped away his final defense.

He took a step toward me, his hands reaching out to cup my face with a fierce, desperate intensity.

"Don't sign the contract," Victor rasped, his voice shaking.

"What?" I choked out.

"Don't sign it," he repeated, his gray eyes searching mine with a terrifying vulnerability. "Because if you sign it, you're my employee. And I don't want you as my employee anymore, Harper."

May you like

"Victor..."

"I want you as my partner," he whispered, leaning down until his lips were inches from mine. "I want you in my bed. I want you at my table. I want you in my life forever. Not because I paid for you... but because I can't breathe in this house without you."
