Chapter 6 - The Breakthrough

The purge of the Hayes estate was swift and bloodless for those who were innocent, but fatal for Security Chief Miller. By nightfall, the traitor had been dealt with, the perimeter reinforced with loyal mercenaries, and the Moretti family pushed back into the defensive shadows of the city's shipping yards.

The mansion returned to a quiet, hyper-vigilant calm.

It was three days after the infiltration. The afternoon rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, amber sunset that painted the West Wing gym in deep golden light.

Declan lay on his back on the padded physical therapy table. He was wearing shorts and a grey tank top, his jaw clenched as Riley stood at the foot of the table, manually flexing his left knee toward his chest.

"Push back against my hand," Riley ordered, her palms braced against the bottom of his heel. "Give me ten percent power."

"I can't feel it, Dawson," Declan grunted, sweat trickling down his neck. "You know I can't feel it."

"I don't care what you think you feel," she said firmly. "The nerve conduction study showed partial regeneration in the L4 vertebrae. The pathways are there, Declan. Your brain is just lazy."

"My brain is fine," he barked. "My legs are dead meat."

"Push. The. Foot." She snapped, digging her fingers into his ankle. "Do it!"

Declan growled, a sound of pure, unadulterated frustration. He closed his eyes, focusing every ounce of his formidable, ruthless willpower into his lower body. He pictured the nerve endings like frayed wires, screaming at his stubborn muscles to respond.

Move, you bastard, he thought. Move.

Riley watched his foot.

For ten seconds, nothing happened. Then, a microscopic tremor rippled through his thigh muscle.

His big toe twitched.

It didn't kick. It didn't lift. It just moved a fraction of a millimeter against the resistance of her palm.

Riley froze. Her breath caught in her throat.

"Declan," she whispered, her voice suddenly trembling.

"What?" he rasped, opening his eyes, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his arm. "Did I tear something?"

"Do it again," she commanded, stepping closer, her hand gripping his heel tightly. "Do it again right now!"

Declan frowned, confused by the intense, frantic look on her face. He locked his jaw, focused his mind back down into his leg, and pushed.

His toe twitched again. Then his ankle flexed—a tiny, weak, miraculous movement of half an inch against her hand.

Riley let out a sharp, breathless gasp. She dropped her hands, covering her mouth as tears instantly flooded her dark eyes.

Declan sat up abruptly, bracing himself on his elbows, staring down at his foot in complete, stunned disbelief. "I... I felt that," he choked out, his voice suddenly sounding young, raw, and completely unarmored. "It felt like... like pins and needles."

"The nerves are firing!" Riley cried out, laughing through her tears. She threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly, completely forgetting her clinical boundaries, forgetting who he was, forgetting everything except the pure, glorious joy of the moment. "You did it! You stubborn, arrogant bastard, you did it!"

Declan froze at the sudden warmth of her body pressed against his chest.

Slowly, almost hesitantly, his massive arms came up, wrapping around her waist, pulling her flush against him. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet vanilla scent of her skin, his broad shoulders shaking with a silent, heavy release of six months of buried agony.

They stayed like that for a long time in the golden light of the gym—the mob boss and the underpaid nurse, locked in an embrace that had long since crossed the line of professional duty.

When Riley finally pulled back, her cheeks were flushed bright pink. She cleared her throat, suddenly very aware of how close her lips were to his dark, handsome face.

"So," she stammered, smoothing down her scrub top, her heart hammering against her ribs like a drum. "That... that means we increase your PT sessions to three times a day."

May you like

Declan didn't let go of her hands. His dark eyes were fixed on her lips, a slow, breathtaking smile spreading across his face—not the terrifying smirk he gave his enemies, but a real, brilliant smile that transformed his ruthless features into something dangerously handsome.

"Three times a day," Declan murmured, his fingers gently tightening around hers. "Whatever you say, Nurse Dawson."
