Chapter 14 - What Luca’s Father Knew

Dr. Michael Warren had treated Luca since childhood.
Broken arm at nine.
Appendicitis at fifteen.
A knife wound Luca refused to discuss at twenty-one.
Antonio’s heart condition.
Luca’s mother’s cancer scare.
Every medical secret the Moretti family possessed had passed through Warren’s hands.
“He cannot be involved,” Luca said.
Grace looked at him.
“You accused Victor yesterday.”
“That was different.”
“How?”
Luca had no answer.
Samuel did.
“Because Warren feels like family.”
Luca glared at him.
Samuel’s expression remained gentle.
“That makes suspicion hurt more, not less.”
They drove to Moretti Medical Center.
This time Grace did not argue about security.
Samuel sat beside her.
Titan remained at the estate because hospital rules had limits even Moretti influence could not casually erase.
The hospital administrator met them downstairs.
Dr. Warren was currently with Eleanor Moretti.
Luca moved quickly.
Grace noticed fear beneath his control.
They reached the private floor.
Two security officers stood outside Eleanor’s suite.
Both belonged to Luca’s team.
Victor questioned them.
Nobody unusual.
Dr. Warren had entered twenty minutes earlier.
Luca opened the room.
His mother sat upright in bed reading.
Dr. Warren stood beside her reviewing a chart.
Both looked surprised.
“Luca?”
Eleanor Moretti was seventy-two, elegant even in a hospital gown.
Her eyes moved toward Samuel.
The book fell from her hands.
“Samuel.”
Samuel stopped.
“Hello, Eleanor.”
She began crying.
Grace looked between them.
Apparently everyone had known her father except her.
Dr. Warren’s face had become unreadable.
Luca noticed.
“Michael.”
“Yes?”
“Step away from my mother.”
Eleanor frowned.
“Luca, what are you doing?”
Warren slowly placed the chart down.
“You believe I harmed her?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You brought Victor and three security officers.”
Grace whispered to Samuel, “Men in this family love saying they didn’t say the obvious thing.”
Samuel almost smiled.
Luca asked, “Did you access Winter House?”
Warren stared.
“What?”
“The archive destruction protocol.”
“I have no idea what you are talking about.”
Samuel stepped forward.
“Marcus Hale.”
Warren’s eyes flickered.
Tiny.
But Grace saw it.
So did Luca.
“Michael.”
Warren removed his glasses.
He suddenly looked very tired.
“Close the door.”
Victor did.
Eleanor stared.
“Someone explain this.”
Warren sat.
“I knew Marcus.”
Luca’s voice hardened.
“How well?”
“Too well.”
“Did you help him?”
“Once.”
Samuel asked, “With the blood sample?”
Warren looked at him.
“Yes.”
Grace’s anger rose.
“The blood found in Dad’s truck.”
“Yes.”
“But that was part of the fake death.”
“Correct.”
“So you were helping Samuel.”
“At first.”
Warren explained.
Antonio asked him to provide stored blood for the staged accident.
Warren believed the plan protected Samuel.
Months later Marcus approached him with evidence of illegal prescriptions Warren had written years earlier for influential clients.
“He blackmailed you,” Luca said.
“Yes.”
“What did he make you do?”
“Give him medical information.”
“Whose?”
“Antonio’s.”
Luca went still.
Grace saw Samuel’s face change too.
“What information?” Luca asked.
Warren looked toward Eleanor.
“His heart medication.”
Silence.
Luca’s voice became barely audible.
“My father died of a heart attack.”
“Yes.”
“Did Marcus cause it?”
Warren’s eyes filled.
“I don’t know.”
“You were his doctor.”
“I know.”
“Did you change his medication?”
“No.”
“Did you give Marcus access?”
Warren hesitated.
Luca stepped closer.
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
Eleanor began crying.
Luca turned away.
Grace could see the effort required for him not to explode.
Samuel spoke.
“Antonio suspected.”
Warren looked surprised.
“How?”
“He told me his pills tasted different.”
Luca turned.
“You knew?”
“Two days before he died.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“He asked me to investigate.”
“Everyone apparently decided I needed protection from the truth.”
Samuel lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Grace understood Luca in that moment better than she wanted to.
Their fathers had made the same mistake.
Love transformed into secrecy.
Protection transformed into betrayal.
Warren continued.
He discovered Marcus had bribed a pharmacy contractor.
Antonio’s medication had been altered.
Not poisoned outright.
Dosage changed.
Enough to destabilize his heart condition.
“Did that kill him?” Grace asked.
Warren shook his head.
“I cannot prove it.”
“But possible.”
“Yes.”
Luca looked devastated.
“And Winter House?”
“I triggered it.”
Victor moved instantly.
Warren raised both hands.
“Marcus called me.”
“From Belize?”
“No. Recorded relay.”
“Why obey?”
“He threatened Eleanor.”
Eleanor stared.
“Me?”
Warren nodded.
“He knew your medication schedule. He claimed someone inside the hospital would harm you if I refused.”
Luca’s voice turned cold.
“So you endangered dozens of people at the estate to protect my mother.”
“Yes.”
Grace expected Luca to condemn him.
Instead he closed his eyes.
Because he understood.
It was exactly the kind of impossible decision every person in this story seemed to have made.
Samuel asked, “Did Marcus tell you what he wanted destroyed?”
“The red ledger.”
“Anything else?”
“A file marked A-17.”
Samuel went pale.
Luca saw.
“What is A-17?”
Samuel looked at Grace.
She immediately hated the expression.
“No.”
Samuel sighed.
“Gracie.”
“No more secrets.”
He nodded.
“A-17 is about you.”
Grace’s stomach dropped.
“What?”
“Antonio opened it after somebody photographed you outside your college.”
“When?”
“Thirteen years ago.”
“What is in it?”
“Every threat made against you.”
Grace stared.
“How many?”
Samuel did not answer.
“How many?”
“Twenty-three.”
Her knees weakened.
Luca pulled a chair toward her.
Grace sat.
“Why didn’t I know?”
Samuel’s eyes filled.
“Because I made sure you didn’t.”
“Twenty-three people threatened me?”
“Not people. Incidents.”
“Explain.”
Anonymous calls.
A car following Grace.
A stranger asking questions at her workplace.
An attempted break-in at her apartment.
Grace remembered some.
She had dismissed them as ordinary city dangers.
They were not.
Samuel had been quietly intercepting them.
Antonio paid private security to watch Grace without her knowledge.
Luca knew nothing.
Neither did Helen.
Grace felt sick.
“Marcus wanted A-17 destroyed because it links him to the threats.”
Samuel nodded.
“Several communications were traced to companies he controlled.”
“Then we need the file.”
“It should be in the archive.”
Victor called the estate.
Winter House had not activated.
A-17 remained safe.
Luca looked at Warren.
“You cooperate with federal investigators.”
Warren nodded.
“You stay away from my family until this is resolved.”
Eleanor protested.
“Luca—”
“No, Mother.”
Warren looked broken.
But he accepted it.
As they prepared to leave, Eleanor called Grace.
“Miss Walker.”
Grace turned.
Eleanor studied her.
“You look like Samuel around the eyes.”
Grace smiled faintly.
“So I hear.”
Eleanor held out her hand.
Grace approached.
“Your father saved Luca once.”
“I know.”
“He saved me too.”
Grace frowned.
“When?”
“The night Antonio died.”
Everyone stopped.
Eleanor continued.
“Samuel came to the house.”
Samuel stared.
“Eleanor…”
“You told me not to tell him.”
Luca looked between them.
“Tell me what?”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“Antonio was alive when Samuel arrived.”
Silence.
Luca stepped closer.
“For how long?”
“Eleven minutes.”
“What did he say?”
Eleanor began crying.
“He knew someone had changed his medicine.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“Did he name Marcus?”
“No.”
“What did he say?”
Eleanor looked toward Samuel.
“You tell him.”
Samuel’s face carried twelve years of guilt.
“Your father made me promise something.”
Luca’s voice hardened.
“What?”
Samuel swallowed.
“He said if he died, I was to keep the red ledger away from you until you had chosen what kind of man you wanted to become.”
Luca stared.
“He didn’t trust me.”
Samuel shook his head.
“He trusted you too much.”
“That makes no sense.”
“He knew the ledger could make you untouchable. Every judge, official, businessman and criminal named inside could be controlled.”
Luca looked toward Grace.
Samuel continued.
“Antonio feared grief would make you use it.”
“And?”
“He asked me to give it to you only when you could destroy the power it offered.”
Luca went quiet.
Grace understood.
The red ledger was not simply evidence.
It was a test Antonio had postponed for twelve years.
And now Luca had to choose between inheriting his father’s greatest weapon—
May you like
or ending the system that had poisoned the Moretti family for generations.
